Fato Unrath&Strano – Unrath&Strano Suit

Finalmente, o fato completo!

Finally the completed suit! This post is heavy on photos so I advise you to click on the post title (so you can load this post alone). If any picture fails to load, you can right-click on the little “X” that shows the place where the picture should be and chose the option “show picture”. I will start by listing the past articles referring to the Unrath&Strano suit, for easy future reference:

Alterations to the original jacket model:

I skipped the satin contrasts to make this version a little less formal. You can see on the line drawing the shaded areas that correspond to the contrasts:
The tailor lapel side can be cut on a single piece instead of two, so I joined the two patterns for the facing and cut a single piece:
The collar and lapel detail:

The belt is narrower than the original, since my buckle is also narrower:
The belt loops on the back:
The inner pocket tab and the inner pocket flap are made of satin. The tab was hand sewn to the flap:
The finished pocket:

Details of the setting in of the sleeves, showing the moustache sleeve head inside:

The correct placement of the shoulder pads, before permanently securing them in place:

The sleeve opening:

Let's move on to the inner details (you know how I love these!). The lining:
The lining/facing/hem intersection made by following Kathleen Fasanella’s “The nameless tutorial” (look for a link to the tutorials on the side bar of Fashion Incubator),I only added the lining pleat, which is quite easy to accomplish:

Here you can see the piping next to the lining, where there’s also a row of matching running stitches using buttonhole twist. Note also the small reinforcing button (it faces the button on the right side):
Initially I had planned a weighted hem for this coat, using a metal chain stitched on the outside, underneath the lining fold. Lara from the blog Laura’s Sewing Room was very kind and sent me a few meters of a silver metal chain (along with some other fabulous gifts, but more on that later). It turns out that the chain was to bulky for this very close fitting jacket and its outline was visible on the right side. So I moved to plan B, which was using a lead covered string like Paco did for one of his jackets (click here). I didn’t place it at the hem edge and instead I followed Els great advice and hand picked the lead weight string the portion of the hem allowance that is hidden by the lining, using the hem allowance as a shield and the lining as a cover (my fabric is much thinner than the one that Paco used and I was afraid the lead string would show through).

Here you can see the right side of the hem (no outlines or bulk):
And on the inside, if I pull the lining fold up and press the lining against the hem allowance you can see the outline of the lead string:
This suit had the contribution of many people from all over the world that are very dear to me: Tini got the pattern for me in Germany; Summersetfound me the wool crepe in the U.S., Paco sent me a few tailoring supplies, along with his expert advice , Els in Holland had a major contribution (best notions and techniques, invaluable advice), Cidell from the U.S. sent me the tailor board for pressing difficult areas, Marji, always a great advisor and all of you who visit me and cherish me with your comments, besides inspiring me everyday with your creations! This project is therefore dedicated to my readers and friends!
