Trata-se de um vestido simples e direito, com painéis laterais e um fecho invisível atrás; o contorno do corpo é conseguido através de pinças na frente (no peito e na anca). Pode fazer-se também um cinto do tecido que sobra para combinar. No modelo original o tecido usado é seda selvagem estampada. É classificado como de fácil execução mas demorada(**/*****).

This is a simple straight dress, featuring side panels and a back invisible zipper; the fit is improved by horizontal darts (chest and hip). A matching self-fabric belt can also be made to emphasize the waist. The original model is made from dupion silk. This pattern is rated as easy to sew but time-consuming (**/*****).

Desci a bainha ligeiramente e forrei o vestido por completo; não costurei o cinto porque prefiro ver este vestido (com este tecido) sem cinto. Podem ver na figura seguinte como ficaria com cinto:
I lengthened the hem a little bit and I made a full lining; I didn't make the matching belt, I like this dress better with no belt (giving the fabric used). In the next picture you can see how it would look like with a belt:

Adorei este projecto por ser um vestido simples e discreto, no entanto elegante. Os pequenos pormenores no interior valorizaram bastante este vestido, acredito que devemos ser tão meticulosas no interior como no exterior das peças que fazemos. O vestido ainda está um justo nas ancas e no peito, mas como estou um pouco acima do meu peso normal, isso não me preocupa. Espero que tenham gostado de acompanhar este projecto comigo, eu adorei a vossa presença através dos comentários e dos emails que me enviaram. Um GRANDE ABRAÇO a todas!
I love this dress because it's simple and discrete, yet elegant. The little details on the inside really add value to a garment; I believe we should be as careful and meticulous on the inside as on the outside. The dress is still tight on the hips and chest but this is what I intended because I'm slightly over weighted (it's being taken care of, lol). I hope you've enjoyed this project as much as I did; it has been fun having your presence along the way through your wonderful comments and emails. A BIG HUG to you all!

Bem, eu tinha dito no meu post anterior que faltava qualquer coisa e o que faltava era mais uma aplicação de renda na bainha do forro para esconder a costura. Isto foi o que fiz ontem:

I said on my previous post that something was missing and that something was an extra lace trim to hide the lining hem stitched line. This was what I did yesterday evening:

Na segunda foto o flash esconde um pouco do efeito da renda mais larga, mas podem ver bem como fica na primeira foto.
The second photo hides a little of the wider lace effect, but you can see it clearly in the first picture.

Ontem eu estava indecisa sobre se deveria ou não fazer um cinto forrado com o mesmo tecido do vestido; até comprei uma fita rígida especial para fazer cintos e tudo, mas hoje de manhã quando experimentei o vestido, olhei-me no espelho e senti-me mesmo bem assim sem cinto, por isso decidi pensar mais um pouco. Depois de ouvir a opinião de algumas amigas decidi não fazer o cinto.
Yesterday I was debating with myself if I should make a covered belt or not. I even bought a special purpose cotton tape but after putting the dress on today's morning I looked at myself in the mirror and I felt really nice with the dress as it is so I decided to give it more thought during the day and after asking some friends for advice I decided not to do the covered belt after all.

Vou escrever o post final sobre este vestido muito em breve, ainda hoje se puder (ainda tenho de tirar fotos de mim com o vestido), portanto mantenham-se atentas!

Fazer a bainha com renda e coser o forro ao vestido - Hemming with lace trim and sewing the lining to the dress

Sendo este vestido um projecto simples e de linhas discretas, não implica que não tenha pormenores luxuosos, muitas vezes escondidos da vista. Depois de ter terminado o acabamento da vista, ontem ainda tive tempo para fazer a bainha no vestido e costurar o forro. Hoje acabei de o pregar à mão ao vestido e fiz também uma bainha rendada no forro, com a renda mais larga. Mesmo assim penso que falta qualquer coisa na bainha do forro e amanhã vou tentar arranjar o que falta.
Being this a simple and discrete dress doesn't mean that it shouldn't have luxurious details, most of them hidden inside. Yesterday, after finishing the facing with the invisible zipper, I had a few time left to hem the dress and sew the lining. Today I finished hand sewing the lining to the dress and also attached the wider lace trim to the lining hem. When looking at it I thought something is still missing and tomorrow I will go to the notion store and I will take care of that matter.

Antes de costurar a bainha, os valores de costura das costuras verticais devem ser aparados, isto faz bastante diferença porque evita volume desnecessário na bainha na zona das costuras:
Before sewing the hem, SAs on the vertical seams should be clipped and trimmed as shown in the next picture; this makes the hem edge more even and prevents bulk at the vertical seam area:

Antes de vincar a bainha para dentro, alinhavo-a a 1.5cm da beira; ao assentar a ferro tenho cuidado para não passar o ferro na orla de cima da bainha, para não a marcar no tecido no lado direito do vestido. Depois da bainha alinhavada desta forma, prendi a renda com alfinetes só aos valores de costura da bainha:
Before pressing the hem I baste it 1.5cm away from the SA edge; when pressing it I don't press on the fabric edge, if I did I would leave an impression on the right side of the hem. After this I pinned the lace trim to the hem's SA (not to the dress):
Assim posso coser a renda à mão com pequenos pontos atrás, alternando em cima e em baixo de forma a segurar bem a renda com pontos que se tornam invisíveis:
This way it's possible to hand sew the hem with tiny alternated up-down backstitches to secure it well to the edge leaving no visible stitches to the sight:

Depois é só coser a bainha à mão:

O passo seguinte foi costurar o forro. Como já vos tinha dito as pinças no forro são assentes para o lado oposto das do vestido, o resto da construção é idêntica, incluindo os valores de costura acabados com a corta-e-cose. Depois do forro preparado, tenho que o pregar à vista e ao fecho atrás. Resolvi fazer isto à mão por causa das costuras da vista serem curvas. Coser uma orla convexa noutra côncava não costuma dar resultados perfeitos e a melhor garantia de perfeição é perder algum tempo e coser estas costuras à mão. Primeiro os valores de costura do forro (incluindo os da abertura do fecho são assentes para o avesso do forro, golpeando nas orlas redondas como mostra a foto:
Next step is sewing the lining. I've already mentioned that the lining darts should be pressed on the opposite direction of the dress darts and other than that the lining is put together the same way as the dress, including the serged SAs. Now it's time to sew the lining to the facing and to the back zipper. Why do I sew it by hand? I do this because the lining/facing has a curved seam to be stitched and I prefer to sew these seams by hand. First I turn the lining SAs to the wrong side (including the zipper opening SAs), clipping them as necessary:

Depois prendo com alfinetes o forro à vista e coso com pontos à mão separados entre si de 3mm:
Then I pin the lining to the facing and I reverse slipstitch along the edge:

Antes de coser o forro às beiras do fecho atrás, coloquei a etiqueta e depois de coser o forro ao fecho coloquei o vestido do lado do avesso no manequim para marcar o comprimento ideal do forro. Na figura seguinte podem ver o vestido do avesso:
Before sewing the lining to the zipper tape I stitch my usual label to the facing. When I'm finished with the lining I put the dress on the dressform wrong side out just to mark the exact hemming length of the lining:

Amanhã, quando for à retrosaria, vou tentar encontrar uma fivela para o cinto. Se não encontrar nada que goste, farei o cinto de atar como no modelo original. Fiquem bem!
When I go to the notion store tomorrow, I will keep an eye for a nice buckle. If I don't find one that I like I will sew the belt as the original model shows. Be well!

Acabamento da vista atrás - Finishing the facing with the zipper

Para fazer o acabamento da vista atrás sobre o fecho invisível escolhi o método ilustrado nesta dica de costura escrita pela Els. Principalmente por causa das Portuguesas e Brasileiras que não estão tão à vontade a ler Inglês, vou explicar este método por palavras minhas, mas aconselho vivamente a verem as fotografias do link que forneci.
To finish the facing with the invisible zipper on the back, I used this Sewing Tip by Els as a guide. Minding mainly the Portuguese and Brazilian readers who may not be comfortable with the English language, I will try to explain the procedure's main guidelines using my own words.

Na figura seguinte vêm a vista virada do avesso por cima do vestido (antes de a virarem para dentro), com a parte do decote que deixámos descosida e o que vou fazer é coser a orla vertical da vista (meio das costas) ao vestido mesmo junto dos dentes do fecho. Para isso desloca-se a vista um pouco para o centro (1cm) e cose-se mesmo junto ao fecho. Vejam aqui pelos alinhavos que a linha de costura da vista se desloca para a direita, alinhando-se com a beira do fecho:
In the next picture you see the wrong side of the facing on top of the dress (before turning it inside), se also the unstitched seam on the top; what I am doing here is stitching the CB facing to the CB dress close to the zipper coil. For this I move the facing a little outwards to the center (1cm) and I stitch it right next to the zipper coil. See the basted line aligning with the zipper tape to see how much the facing was moved to the center:

A orla do decote é cosida em cima, os valores de costura são aparados, graduados e aparados no canto; vocês estão a ver aqui a vista do avesso:
Next I sew the back neckline; SAs are graded and trimmed as you can see in the picture:
Resolvi seguir a sugestão da Els e coser um botão com um olhal feito com um rolinho de forro e um botão, em vez dos colchetes (vejam no tutorial como se prende o olhal antes de coser as vistas). Podem também notar que já pespontei as vistas à mão, os pequenos pontinhos são pontos atrás feitos à mão:
I followed Els advice and sewed a button and a loop instead of the hook/eye to secure the zipper opening on the inside (see the tutorial on how to stitch the loop to the zipper tape before finishing the facing). See also that I've already understitched the facing edge with tiny backstitches 4mm apart from each other:

Não sei se com vocês se passa o mesmo, mas eu tenho o problema das alças do soutien estarem sempre a cair, o que é chato se quiser usar este vestido sem uma blusa por baixo. Para evitar que isso aconteça, cosi à mão umas tirinhas de fita de algodão com uns colchetes no lado de dentro dos ombros, de modo a evitar que as alças do soutien caiam dos ombros:
I don't know about you but my bra straps keep falling down from my shoulders and that can be really annoying if you are wearing a sleeveless dress like this one. To prevent this from happening I hand sewed a cotton tape with a tiny snap on each shoulder (wrong side of the garment) just to hold the bra straps in place:

Costurar a vista inteiriça no vestido (Parte II) - Sewing the dress all-in-one shoulder facing (Part II)

Parte I – Part I

No post anterior sobre as vistas (clicar no link acima) tinha acabado de graduar as costuras e fazer os pequenos cortes em “v” nas curvas; depois de fazer isto costumo assentar a ferro os valores de costura em direcção às vistas e só depois virar a vista para o lado direito (o vestido fica do lado do avesso):

On my previous post about the facings (click the above link) I had the SAs graded and clipped along the neckline and armscyes; after doing this I pressed the SAs gently to the facing side and I turned the all-in-one facing right side out (the dress is wrong side out):

Com os ombros do vestido sobrepostos (direito contra direito) cose-se a costura dos ombros (na foto estou a prender a costura com alfinetes antes de a coser:
I stitched the shoulder seams, right sides of the garment together (in the next picture you see me pining this seam before I stitch it):

Os valores de costura dos ombros são aparados e cortados nos cantos antes de serem abertos a ferro:
I trim and clip the shoulder SAs before I press them open:
Agora vem a parte complicada de explicar; a melhor forma de perceberem é tentarem fazer isto numa peça de teste, mas vou tentar explicar: mete-se a mão por entre as costas e a vista das costas e puxa-se os ombros da vista por entre estas duas camadas; assim já conseguimos unir as costuras dos ombros das vistas direito contra direito para as podermos coser:
Now comes the tricky part; the best way to understand this is trying to do it yourself, but I'll try to explain: reach between the back and the back facing (put your hand between the two layers and reach the facing shoulder seams). Pull out the facing shoulder between these two layers and this way you'll be able to stitch the facing shoulder seam (trim, clip and press open):

Para coser as costuras das cavas e do decote junto aos ombros que estavam descosidas, basta puxar mais um bocadinho e alinhar a vista com o vestido ao longo destas costuras, sobrepondo as costuras dos ombros das vistas com o vestido. Deve-se coser até sobrepor um pouco a restante costura que já estava feita e fazer mais uns cortes em “v” se necessário:
Adjust the shoulder of the garment so you can complete the unstitched sections at the neckline and armscye. Do this very carefully because there isn't much room to do it properly if the neckline is not very deep, as in this case. When stitching, make sure to overlap the previously stitched line a little bit. Grade and clip if necessary:

Depois de repetir este procedimento no outro ombro temos as vistas completamente cosidas ao vestido menos na costura perto do fecho atrás. Depois de virar as vistas, com o vestido do lado direito, é assim que ficam os ombros:
After repeating on the other shoulder, the facing is completely stitched to the dress (except for the back near the zipper opening) and this is what you have after straightening the shoulders and turning the dress right side out:

Quando costuro vistas gosto de pespontar os valores de costura às vistas por dentro, sem apanhar o tecido do vestido. Antes de fazer isto vou alinhavar primeiro os valores de costura para o lado das vistas e assentar as orlas das cavas e do decote a ferro, só para poder vestir o vestido e ver se preciso de franzir um pouco as cavas para ficarem mais justas ao corpo:
When I sew facings like this one I like to understitch the edges, catching the SAs together with the facing. Before I do this I hand baste and I press the stitching line so I can try the dress on and find out if I need to ease the armscyes while understitching:

Os alinhavos só apanham a vista e os valores de costura por dentro:

The hand basting holds together the facing edges and the SAs inside, not the dress:

Antes de fazer o pesponto à mão nas vistas (por onde alinhavei), vou mostrar-vos o resultado da aplicação das vistas através deste método; podem ver aqui a parte da frente (as costas não estão acabadas no decote nem serão pespontadas ainda por causa do acabamento do fecho que será feito a seguir):

Costurar a vista inteiriça no vestido (Parte I) - Sewing the dress all-in-one shoulder facing (Part I)

Depois de ler os comentários do link que indiquei no final da minha entrada sobre costurar as pinças no vestido, o método que melhor me pareceu para aplicar o forro (ou uma vista inteira como a deste vestido) é o descrito pela Meg (vejam os comentários). Este método implica que as costuras do lado do vestido coincidam com as costuras do lado da vista, o que no caso deste vestido não acontece, pois temos costuras laterais únicas na vista e duas costuras de cada lado (dos painéis laterais) no vestido. Para aplicar o método descrito pela Meg eu teria de modificar o molde da vista, de modo a que a sua costura única coincidisse com a costura lateral de trás do vestido, como está ilustrado na figura seguinte:
After reading the comments on the link provided at the end of one of my previous blog entries (sewing the darts), I realized that my preferred method to sew the facing/lining to a sleeveless dress is the method described by Meg (see comments). This method implies that the facing side seams and the dress side seams match, so they can be stitched as one. With this dress this doesn't happen because the dress has a side panel with two seams on each side and the facing has regular side seams. To follow this method I would have to alter the facing pattern as follows, so that a single side seam on the facing matches the back side seam on the dress:

Assim seria possível coser a costura de trás do vestido e em seguimento a costura da vista, permitindo por em prática o método descrito pela Meg. Infelizmente, quando me apercebi disto já era tarde demais pois já tinha cortado as vistas com o seu molde original e não me sobrou tecido suficiente para cortar novas vistas. Como não posso usar este método, usarei um outro método (podem encontrar a sua descrição no livro “High Fashion Sewing Secrets from the World’s Best Designers” da Claire Shaeffer, página 215. Este método é indicado para vistas seguidas (ombros e decote numa única vista) mesmo sem qualquer abertura de fecho.
This way I could sew the dress side back seam and the facing side seam as one, as Meg explained. Unfortunately when I saw Meg's comment I had already cut the facings and there was no extra fabric left to re-cut them, so I'm unable to put this method into practice now. I will use another method (you can see its full description on the “High Fashion Sewing Secrets from the World’s Best Designers by Claire Shaeffer” book, on page 215. This method can be used to sew any all-in-one shoulder facing even if there is no side or back closure on the garment.

Antes de seguir os passos deste método é importante verificar algumas características na vista: a largura do ombro deve ser ligeiramente menor na vista que no vestido, digamos que 3mm de cada lado do ombro é suficiente.
Before explaining this method it's important to make sure that the facing is a little narrower than the dress on the shoulders; the shoulder width on the facing should be less 1/8" on each side of the shoulder.

O primeiro passo é costurar as costuras do lado, tanto no vestido como na vista, deixando os ombros por coser:
The first step is sewing the side seams on both the dress and the facing, leaving the shoulder seams open:

Depois prende-se a vista com alfinetes no vestido, alinhando as suas linhas de costura com o vestido e alinhava-se ao longo das orlas do decote e das cavas; Na próxima figura podem ver as linhas a verde que indicam por onde se vai coser (deixa-se a costura em aberto uns 4cm antes de chegar aos ombros, tanto na frente como atrás):
Then I just pin the facing to the dress, right sides facing each other, so that the stitching lines match along the neckline and the armscye. I hand baste and I remove the pins, then I machine stitch where the green lines show in next picture (I stop about 2" away from the shoulder seams):

Notem também que se deixa por coser uns 5cm antes de chegar ao fecho atrás; isto é necessário para depois fazer o acabamento da vista junto ao fecho:
Take note that you should leave the seam open on the back, about 2" before reaching the zipper opening so you can finish the zipper opening later:

Depois de coser, retiro os alinhavos e removo os alinhavos de marcação só nos sítios onde cosi à máquina; depois tenho que graduar as costuras e fazer os pequenos cortes em "v" nas partes redondas, como já tenho explicado várias vezes; os valores de costura do vestido ficam um pouco maiores que os da vista e os "v"s intercalam-se de forma a reduzir o volume da costura depois de pronta:
After machine stitching I remove all the hand bastings; I remove the thread tracing only on the previously stitched lines (green lines above). After this I grade and clip the neckline and the armscye seams as you can see in the next picture: the dress SAs are graded wider that the facing SAs, clipping is done so the little "v"s don't match on both SAs:
