Este modelo não é forrado no original; parte do desafio foi arranjar uma forma de o forrar. Optei por uma técnica de sub-forrar e usei tecido de forro cor da pele pois o tecido marfim que escolhi é um pouco transparente. De forma ao acabamento no interior ser o mais perfeito possível, fiz vários testes de forma a determinar o tipo de costura mais indicado para este modelo:
The original model is not intended to be lined; part of the challenge was finding a way to line this garment. Instead of lining the garment I underlined it with skin colored lining because the ivory fabric is a little show-through. To make the inside finishing as neat as possible I performed several tests to determine the best seam finish for this project:

A determinada altura, deparou-se-me um problema: ao usar a gabardina como um vestido com os primeiros botões desabotoados, parte do forro seria visível nos cantos; para impedir que isto acontecesse, resolvi coser um encaixe de tecido ao forro, por dentro:
When I was sewing this trench coat I noticed that if I wore the first buttons unbuttoned the lining would be visible at the collar corner; to avoid this I made a little fabric inset sewn to the lining inside:

Os botões são cosidos usando um palito e um botão chato e transparente no interior para reforço. O palito serve para fazer um pé de botão (dar alguma altura ao botão) e o botão no interior é cosido ao mesmo tempo que o botão exterior. Depois de coser os botões tira-se o palito e dá-se várias voltas com o fio duplo em redor do botão de fora, dá-se um nó e passa-se para o botão de dentro, onde se remata o fio com outro nó (os nós ficam escondidos debaixo dos botões).

For sewing the buttons in place I used a tooth pick and an inside flat button for reinforcement. The tooth pick is used to build a shank between the fabric and the button; the inside button is stitched at the same time as the outside button is. After stitching the two buttons together, I remove the tooth pick and make several turns around the button with the thread (I use double thread) on the right side. I make a knot around the shank and I pass the needle to the inside, finishing with a knot around the flat button too.

Auto-crítica – Critique

Há algumas coisas que faria melhor se voltasse a costurar esta gabardina: usaria agulhas Microtex para tecidos com tecedura densa (só consegui estas agulhas quando a gabardina estava praticamente acabada) e fio Alterfil, faria os pespontos decorativos com tamanho do ponto 3 ou 3.5 (a minha máquina tem-me dado alguns problemas ao coser pontos com tamanho superior a 2.5) e, finalmente, coseria as mangas de outra forma. A forma correcta de coser mangas com uma costura superior é coser primeiro as partes da manga às respectivas partes do corpo e depois coser os ombros e a costura superior da manga como uma só, as costuras laterais e a costura inferior da manga da mesma forma. Tirando estes pormenores, fiquei bastante satisfeita com o resultado final.
There are a few things I would do better if I was to make this trenchcoat again: I would use Microtex needles (at the time I finally got these needles the trenchcoat was almost finished) and ALterfil thread, I would use a 3 to 3.5 stitch length for the topstitching (my machine was giving me trouble when stitching length was above 2.5) and last but not least I would sew the sleeves differently; the correct way to sew sleeves when an upper seam is involved is to sew the sleeve parts to the body first and only then sew the shoulder seam together with the upper sleeve seam, the same for the side seams and inner sleeve seams. This would prevent me from doing those handstitches at the shoulders inside. Other than this I'm quite pleased with the final result!

For last, here you have the bag and the shoes (both were Birthday gifts) that completed my outfit! I wore the trenchcoat on my Birthday and got lots of compliments!

Ainda falta fazer o cinto elástico e decidir se ponho uma fivela no conto que vêm nas fotos; primeiro tenho que tentar encontrar ilhóses que diquem bem neste cinto!

I still have to finish the elastic belt and decide if I will add a buckle to the belt you see in the pictures; first I have to find the matching grommets for the belt!

Último post antes de um curto intervalo – Last update before taking a small break

É isso mesmo, estou a preparar-me para umas curtas férias no Algarve e só devo regressar na próxima semana! Hoje pretendo acabar a gabardina mas não devo conseguir apresentar o post final antes de partir de férias, por isso vou mostrar-vos o meu progresso até agora.
That's right, I’m taking a small vacation break for a few days! I plan to be back in the beginning of the next week. Today I plan on finishing the trench coat but chances are I won't have the time to make a final post about it, so I will show you what I have done so far.

As mangas estão acabadas e colocadas; as costuras das cavas foram debruadas com tiras de forro em viés, da mesma forma que fiz para a saia e parcialmente pespontadas:

The sleeves are finished and set in; the armscye seams are bind with lining bias tape (the same way I did for the seam attaching the skirt to the body) and then partially topstitched:

O ângulo de colocação da manga no ombro é bastante difícil de rematar no interior; o melhor que consegui fazer foi rematar a costura com uns pontos à mão, como mostro a seguir:
The shoulder inset corner is a hard one to get right on the inside so the best I could do was a few handstitches where the seams meet:

Podem ver como cortei e apliquei o tecido no ângulo do decote, de forma a esconder o forro se usar a gabardina com os primeiros botões desabotoados; este pedaço de tecido é cosido apenas ao forro, do lado do direito é imperceptível:
Here you can see how I did the partial facing for the collar/placket corner, this way I avoid showing the lining if I wear it with the first buttons unbuttoned; this little fabric triangle is sewn only to the lining and doesn't show on the right side:

The collar is sewn following the magazine's instructions, no secrets here; you can see that one piece is stitched to the neckline first (note the fabric triangle at the corner):

Para fazer a banda de abotoar, o único segredo além das habituais instruções é a passagem a ferro; antes de coser as extremidades na gola e na bainha em baixo, a banda já tem os vincos feitos, tanto na dobra do rebordo como nos valores de costura:
The only trick I use to sew the placket is pressing and pressing and pressing; before sewing the extremities (collar and bottom hem), the body/placket SAs are pressed to the placket direction and the fold and the other SAs are pressed too; this makes it easier when turning the placket to the right side, pinning and basting; everything falls into its right place.

As mangas: alguns pormenores a considerar – The sleeves: a few details to consider

Viva caras leitoras, hoje venho mostrar-vos o meu progresso nas mangas da gabardina. Alguns detalhes das mangas (passadeiras nos ombros, tira abotoada dos punhos), devem ser costurados antes de fechar a costura interior das mangas.
Greetings dear sewing friends, today I will show you my progress on the sleeves. Some details have to be set before closing the inner seam on the sleeves (sleeve buttoned belts, shoulder straps and loops) so this entry is about those details.

A primeira coisa que fiz foi sub-forrar as mangas seguindo o mesmo procedimento que já conhecem; depois cobri as costuras exteriores (ombros e parte de fora dos braços) com a tira de forro em viés e podem ver nas próximas fotografias que este acabamento resulta muito bem nas costuras arredondadas:

First I underlined the sleeve pieces following the same procedure as for the rest of the trench coat; after stitching the upper sleeve seam I made a "taped seam finish" and next pictures will show you how neat this finishing is when done on curved seams:

Além disso não foi necessário reforçar estas costuras para não esticarem como é habitual em costuras curvas ou em viés; a costura é perfeitamente estável sem qualquer tipo de reforço adicional.
Besides, there is no need for further reinforcement as usual on curved or bias seams; this seam is perfectly stabilized and it doesn't stretch at all as it is.

Para reforçar o sítio onde o botão é cosido e para manter o interior da gabardina tão perfeito como possível, podem ver que cosi um botão pequenino no lado do avesso, ao mesmo tempo que cosi o botão de fora:

The place where the button is stitched is reinforced with a small flat button on the inside; this small button is stitched together with the outer button.

Coser um botão ainda tem muito que se lhe diga! Quando coser os botões na frente vou explicar como costumo coser os botões.
Sewing a button properly (or should I say stitching a button? I don't know if either way is correct in English) is an important detail; I will explain how I do this when I address the placket.

Quanto à minha questão sobre a vista na frente já sei o que vou fazer. Se esta peça de vestuário fosse para usar apenas como gabardina não me preocuparia com este pormenor, pois num casaco acaba-se sempre por se ver o forro. Como tenciono usar esta peça também como vestido, que vou fazer é cobrir apenas o ângulo do decote com um triângulo de tecido; esse triângulo será cosido ao forro e fica preso junto com o forro e o tecido de fora na costura do decote e na costura da faixa dos botões. Assim fico com a certeza que se usar o “vestido” um pouco desabotoado em cima não se vai ver nenhum pedacinho do forro.
I know now what to do about the collar; if this was to be worn as a trench coat I wouldn't mind the lining being visible at all, but let's not forget that I also intend to wear it as a dress. What I intend to do is a small fabric inset sewn to the lining and covering that angle between the collar and the placket. It will be encased by the collar seam and the placket seam and this way I may use the "dress" with the top unbuttoned without taking the risk of showing the lining (this is a small risk because the placket is so wide but better safe than sorry).

A saia franzida - The gathered skirt

Depois de lidar com os dois tecidos juntos como um só (tecido e forro) fiquei bastante confiante que poderia fazer a saia franzindo os dois tecidos ao mesmo tempo, por isso resolvi usar a mesma técnica para sub-forrar que usei na parte de cima da gabardina. Como o tecido é ligeiramente transparente, cortei o forro sem valores de costura na bainha para servir de escudo para a própria bainha vista do exterior. Na próxima fotografia podem ver o forro e o tecido alinhavados como um só (notem que o forro termina mesmo na linha da bainha):
After dealing with both fabric and lining together as one I felt pretty confident that I could try to gather them together, so I used the same underlining technique I've been using for the upper body. As I said before, this ivory fabric is a little see-through so I decided to cut the lining hem with no SA and use the lining as a shield for the hem finish. In the next picture you can observe the lining and the fabric already basted together (note that the lining ends exactly at the hem edge):

Depois costurei as costuras dos lados da saia e cobri-as com uma tira de forro em viés como fiz para as outras costuras; notem como a costura rematada termina antes da bainha e como aparei os valores de costura:
I sewed and finished the skirt's side seams as I did for the upper body; note where the seam finish ends and how I trimmed and clipped the SAs at the fold line:

Para franzir a saia usei a máquina com o ponto regulado para o máximo comprimento e a linha da agulha solta; com o lado direito virado para cima cosi duas linhas paralelas, uma na linha de costura superior da saia e outra afastada uns 5mm sobre o valor de costura; em vez de coser ao longo de toda a saia cosi várias secções separadas (duas nas partes da frente, quatro na parte de trás) de forma a poder franzir apenas uma secção de cada vez e garantir que o franzido fica mais uniforme. Para franzir basta puxar o fio da bobine (o que não está solto). Depois de juntar a saia ao corpo, retiram-se todos os alinhavos e assenta-se os valores de costura em direcção ao corpo (para cima):
To gather the skirt I used two parallel stitching lines setting the stitch to its maximum length and losing the needle stitch. The first row matches the stitching line and the second is placed 5mm away on the SA side. I divided the gathering line into several separate sections so the fullness would be evenly distributed more easily. To gather the skirt all you have to do is pull the bobbin stitch and use pins to hold the skirt together with the upper body. After permanent stitching the skirt to the upper body, the SAs are pressed to the body direction (upwards):

Depois de aparar os valores de costura com a corta-e-cose para cerca de 8mm, fixei com alfinetes uma tira de forro em viés aos valores de costura, do lado do franzido e coso-a exactamente junto à linha de costura anterior:
After trimming the SA to approximately 8mm using my unthreaded serger, I pined a stripe of bias lining to the SA on the gathered side and I machine stitch it very close to the previous stitching line:

Esta tira de forro é usada para cobrir os valores de costura; primeiro fixa-se com alfinetes e depois alinhava-se na direcção do corpo e assenta-se a ferro antes de coser pelo lado direito (usando linha da cor do forro na bobina):
The lining bias tape is used to bind the seam on the inside; first I pin it around the SA and then I hand baste it to the upper body; After pressing it one more time I machine stitch it on the right side (using a matching thread to the lining on the bobbin):

Agora tenho um pequeno problema; se usar a gola desabotoada aberta é possível que se veja um pouco do forro. Por isso talvez seja melhor colocar uma vista em tecido por dentro na zona do decote, não acham?
Now I have this problem; if I use the collar unbuttoned there is a chance of the lining showing on the right side. To prevent this from happening maybe I should make a facing with the fashion fabric and apply it to the inside front collar area; what do you think?

As costas - The back

Se tiverem a revista Burda 02/2007 e observarem o esquemático deste modelo nas folhas de instruções devem notar que nas costas há uma espécie de capa, como é típico de muitas gabardinas. Esta capa é abotoada ao centro das costas e, como não quero que o remate do botão seja visível no avesso, vou coser o botão no sítio antes de forrar os valores de costura no meio das costas.
If you have the 02/2007 BWOF issue on hand and if you observe the line drawing for the trench coat, you can see on the back view that there is a small shoulder cape; that is a common feature on many trench coats. This small cape is buttoned to the CB seam; I don't want the stitching to be visible on the inside so I will stitch the button in place before covering the SAs with the lining bias tape.

Primeiro uso a corta-e-cose sem linhas e sem agulhas para cortar os valores de costura certinhos, mais ou menos com 8mm de largura, depois de abrir as costuras a ferro:
Here you can see me using my unthreaded serger to trim the SAs 8mm wide after pressing them flat open; I took the needles off the machine to avoid piercing the fabric.

Entretanto tive que fazer a capa, ou seja coser a sua orla inferior, passar esta costura, apará-la e escalá-la, virar as peças para o direito e pespontar a beira inferior. O passo seguinte foi fazer a casa de botão e como estou a trabalhar com duas camadas de tecido muito fino sem qualquer tipo de reforço, prendi um pedaço de tecido por baixo (no avesso da capa) do sítio onde terei de fazer a casa:

In the meanwhile I made the small shoulder cape ( I placed the two fabric pieces with right sides together and stitched the downward seam, pressed/graded/clipped the SAs and turned it to the right side and finally topstitched close to the edge). For the centered buttonhole I reinforced the wrong side with a self-fabric small rectangle:

Depois de fazer a casa este tecido é recortado à volta da casa. Desta forma a casa de botão fica reforçada e com melhor aspecto no lado direito. Depois coloquei a capa sobre as costas para determinar o sítio exacto do botão e cosi o botão antes de forrar os valores de costura com forro no avesso das costas.
When the buttonhole is finished this fabric is trimmed around the buttonhole; the buttonhole becomes stronger and better looking on the right side. Next I pinned the small shoulder cape to the back and I marked the exact placement spot for the button. I stitched the button in place anchoring it with a little tiny of folded organza (wrong side of the garment) before covering the SAs on the inside.

Voltemos então ao acabamento interior das costuras; primeiro prendo com alfinetes a minha tira de forro em viés ao centro da costura, do lado do avesso:
Lets get back to the CB seam; first I pin the lining bias tape along the wrong side of the pressed open seam:

Depois, com cuidado, viro o rebordo da tira para dentro e prendo com alfinetes, de forma a abraçar o valor de costura; depois de terminar de prender com alfinetes um lado, alinhavo e retiro os alfinetes; repito o mesmo procedimento do outro lado da costura. O próximo passo é passar a ferro a costura alinhavada:
Then I carefully turn the lining edge under one of the SAs and I use pins along the SA to keep the lining folded in place. Next I hand baste 4mm away the SA edge and I remove the pins as I baste. I repeat this procedure on the other SA. The seam is ready to be pressed once more.

Agora já posso coser o forro definitivamente aos valores de costura; mudei as linhas da máquina para uma cor igual ao forro e cosi os dois lados a 2mm da orla, como podem ver na figura seguinte; repeti o processo no outro lado da costura.
Now I can permanently machine stitch the lining to the SAs; I changed the thread color to match the lining color and I placed the seam as you can see in the nest picture, stitching 2 mm from the edge; I repeated the procedure for the other SA.

After this I moved on to the shoulder and side seams, the procedure is the same; next pictures will show you the back of the trench coat:

Para já estou satisfeita com a forma como este projecto tem corrido; tenho aprendido técnicas novas, o trabalho tem compensado em qualidade.
This has been a valuable learning experience and I feel that my sewing skills are improving along with the process.
