Aqui têm, como prometido, o post final sobre a capa! Pouco mais há a acrescentar ao que disse nos posts anteriores mas gosto sempre de fazer um post que reúna apontadores para os passo-a-passo e que mostre alguns detalhes do acabamento.
As promised, here's the final post for the BWOF cape! I have little more to add to what I already wrote about it but I like the idea of a final post where I can link to all the tutorials and show you a few more interesting details.

Embora ultimamente o tempo seja escasso para escrever os passo-a-passo das roupas que vou costurando, por saber que muita gente estava a ter alguma dificuldade em perceber as instruções de confecção desta capa, resolvi tentar ajudar na medida do possível. Conclusion: A very time-consuming project, yet a success! This cape is a very versatile and trendy item, a great addition to my Fall wardrobe! In spite of the lack of available time for updating my blog, I tried to explain what I believe are the difficult construction steps because I know that BWOF's instructions can be hard to understand without any pictures or drawings. I hope this series of articles where useful for breaking down the construction of this cape. I leave you with a couple more views:

O virar da capa, gola e as costuras laterais - Turning the cape to the right side, securing the collar and closing the side seams

Este é o último passo-a-passo da confecção da capa, onde tento explicar como fiz os três passos descritos no título. Se bem se lembram, a nossa capa estava do avesso com as costuras laterais abertas e a gola aplicada. É muito importante golpear e abrir a ferro as costuras de junção da gola e também é importante que estas costuras sejam cosidas com exactidão. O passo seguinte é pois virar o colete para o lado direito, o que tento esquematizar com a figura seguinte:

This is the last step-by-step tutorial on the BWOF cape, in which I try to explain how I did the three construction steps described in the subject title. Most of you will remember that last time we ended up with an inside out vest with the collar inside and the side seams open. It is very important to clip/notch and then press open the seams that join the collar to the vest and also that these seams were sewn accurately on both lining and fabric shells. The next step will be turning the vest to its right side; I will try to explain how with the help of the next drawing:

Trata-se de enfiar o nosso braço por uma das costuras abertas num dos lados da parte da frente, passá-lo através do canal dos ombros e alcançar a costura da bainha de trás, puxando-a através do canal dos ombros e da costura lateral para fora, virando assim todo o colete.
All there is to it is sticking your arm through one of the opened front side seams, across the shoulder channels and grabbing the back hem seam inside, pulling it out through the side seam and this way turning the entire vest to its right side.

Nas instruções o passo seguinte seria alcançar os valores de costura do decote (costura que une a gola ao colete) através de uma das costuras laterais e cose-los juntos; em vez de fazer isto, prefiro sobrepor as costuras (que devem ter os valores de costura abertos por dentro) e coser à mão exactamente no sitio da costura com pequenos pontos atrás espaçados de 1cm. O resultado é uma linha de pontos invisíveis que une a costura do colarinho superior à do colarinho inferior para que se mantenham sobrepostas. Também apliquei esta técnica na costura que une o pé da gola à gola:

For securing the collar seams in place BWOF's instructions will have you to reaching the collar seams inside the vest through one of the opened side seams and stitching them together; instead of doing this I prefer to prickstitch along the perfectly overlapped seams, right at the fabric junction; as you should know, a prickstitch is nothing more than tiny backstitches far spaced apart so these stitches will barely be visible at all and they will make sure that the seams on the undercollar and uppercollar stay together in place. I also did this for the collar stand seam:
Agora resta-nos fechar as costuras laterais. Espero que o esquema seguinte ajude, com a cor vermelha a representar o tecido e a cor verde o forro:
Now it's time to close the side seams. Observe the next drawing; the red color represents the fashion fabric and the green is the lining:

Se juntarem as costuras laterais (ficando o forro para fora) podem coser as costuras a vermelho uma à outra e no prolongamento coser também um pouco do forro de cada lado; depois de fazerem isto em ambos os lados, colocarem o colete com o tecido para fora, vai parecer acabado, excepto pelas costuras laterais no forro que ainda Têm uma secção aberta; se enfiarem a mão por uma destas aberturas podem puxar o forro da outra costura e fechar essa costura; resta-nos apenas uma abertura que deve ser fechada com pontos à mão.
If you join the side seams with the vest standing with the lining to the outside, you'll find out how easy you can stitch the fabric side seams closed together; when you do this you will also find out that you can continue sewing the lining seams for a little on each end; after doing this, if you stand with the vest with the fabric side to the outside, it will seem almost finished, except for a section on both lining side seams inside! One of the opened lining side seams can be stitched by machine just by reaching it and pulling it out through the other opened side seam. This last one however will have to be closed by stitching it by hand.

É claro que falta pespontar todas as costuras, coser os botões e as casas, mas o mais difícil está feito! Espero que esta série de artigos tenha ajudado quem tinha dúvidas acerca do processo de construção da capa! You still have to topstitch all the edges and finish up sewing the buttons/buttonholes but the difficult part is done! I hope this series of step-by-step illustrated instructions will help some of you on breaking down this cape! I will post a last article about it, just for showing a few more details, linking to all the tutorials for easy access and posting a picture of me wearing the cape! See you soon!

O forro e a gola da capa – The cape: the lining and the collar

Continuando com os passo-a-passo da capa, vamos ver como confeccionei o forro. Na próxima figura podem ver o detalhe do forro da capa pronta onde se distingue bem a vista da frente por ser confeccionada no tecido de xadrez. O primeiro passo é então confeccionar o forro, unindo todas as costuras excepto as costuras laterais (ombros, costuras dos painéis laterais e vista – as pinças de frente são cosidas em primeiro lugar). Tenham em atenção que não cortei uma vista das costas para o decote (a parte de cima da gola é cosida directamente ao forro), e por isto a vista da frente é cortada com o mesmo molde da frente e não com o molde da vista que é usado na versão A do casaco. Se optarem por fazer o forro assim devem reforçar o decote e as cavas no forro com tiras de entretela e com um pesponto antes de coser o forro ao colete.

Moving on with the walkthroughs for the BWOF cape, today I'll try to explain how I made the lining and the collar. Next picture shows the lining detail on the finished cape where you can easily tell apart the front facing because it's cut on the plaid fabric. The first thing to do is sewing the lining, joining all seams except the side seams (this includes the mid side, the front facing and the shoulder seams – the front side darts should be stitched first, of course). Note that there is no back collar facing (the upper collar is stitched directly to the lining), this is why the front facing is cut using the center front panel pattern instead of the front facing pattern used for view A. If you do things this way, don't forget to reinforce the lining by fusing interfacing strips at the collar and armhole seams (I also stay stitched them).

O forro é cosido à parte em tecido, juntando ambas direito contra direito, com a capa por dentro (cuidado para não prender acidentalmente a capa nas costuras depois). As costuras que devem ser fechadas estão indicadas a vermelho no desenho (desculpem a falta de jeito!) e a sombreado estão as costuras abertas. Ficamos com uma espécie de sanduíche com a capa dentro:

The lining is stitched to the outer shell ONLY where indicated by the red lines in my drawing (excuse me the bad drawing, but I couldn't get clear pictures of this). The shadowed areas indicate where the seams are opened. At this point we get a sort of a "sandwich" with the cape in the inside:

Agora vamos ver como se faz a gola. Os moldes da gola e do pé da cola são os seguintes (sem valores de costura incluídos):
Now let's address the collar. The collar & collar stand patterns are the following (SAs are not included):
Primeiro cose-se cada parte da gola ao pé da gola (tenham em atenção que a parte de cima da gola deve ser ligeiramente maior para acomodar a dobra do tecido depois da gola estar pronta), golpeiam-se os valores de costura e abrem-se a ferro. Em seguida cosem-se as duas folhas da gola direito contra direito mas terminando a costura como indicado (isto é importante pois facilita imenso a aplicação da gola depois) – no desenho os valores de costura estão incluídos, ao contrário do que acontece na foto dos moldes:
First you must join each collar stand to each collar piece (don't forget to mind the turn of the cloth here: the upper collar should be slightly larger than the undercollar); clip/notch as necessary, press the seams open. Stitch the upper collar to the under collar (both with the collar stands attached now); note where the stitching line must end observing the next drawing very carefully (here SAs are included). This is very important because it will facilitate the collar setting in process later.
Depois de virar a gola para o lado direito (aparar os valores de costura, abri-los com o ferro e golpeá-los onde necessário), enfia-se a gola na abertura do decote e prende-se com alfinetes. Cose-se a parte de baixo da gola à parte em tecido e a parte de cima da gola à parte em forro, golpeando e abrindo os valores de costura a ferro (podem enfiar o presunto de alfaiate por dentro através de uma das costuras laterais abertas para facilitar a passagem a ferro):
Clip, grade, notch, press SAs open and turn the collar to the right side. Now stick the collar inside the "sandwich" through the collar opening and pin it in place along the neckline. Sticth the under collar to the fabric shell (together with the cape) and the upper collar to the lining shell. Clip/notch and press seams open (insert the tailor ham inside through one of the side seams and you can do this easily!)

A seguir temos de virar o colete para o lado direito e prender as costuras da gola sobrepostas! No próximo post vou tentar explicar como se faz! Entretanto terminei de fazer o meu primeiro projecto utilizando um molde Vogue! Ficou o máximo! Prometo mostrar mal tenha tempo para escrever sobre esse projecto! Entretanto fiquem com uma amostra:

Next I will explain how to turn the vest/cape right side out and secure the collar seams together! In the meanwhile I finished sewing my first Vogue pattern and I'm VERY pleased with it! I will review it as soon as I can! Here's a sneak peek (guesses anyone??):

A capa: abertura por onde passa o cinto – The cape: how I made the belt slit

Fazer a abertura por onde passa o cinto na capa não é difícil, pelo menos na versão onde a capa é forrada. A Burda fornece o molde da capa (costas cortado na dobra do tecido e frente cortado duas vezes) juntamente com o molde da vista da bainha da capa. Temos portanto pelo menos 3 opções para confeccionar a capa:
Making the belt slit on the cape is not difficult if you line the cape completely. BWOF presents the cape pattern (the back cut on the fold and the front cut twice) together (overlapped) with the hem facing pattern (instead of two different patterns as often happens with Big4 patterns). This leaves us with at least three options:

1 - Não forrar a capa e aplicar a vista da bainha;
1 – Making a faced hem and not lining the cape;
2 – Forrar a capa cortando o forro exactamente como o tecido (não descontando a largura da vista)
2 – Line the cape cutting the lining exactly as you cut the fashion fabric (using the pattern full length – not cutting off the facing width from the pattern);
3- Forrar a capa mas aplicar na mesma a vista; para isso primeiro usa-se o molde inteiro para cortar a capa em tecido e depois corta-se fora a vista deste molde; usa-se o molde sem a vista para cortar o forro e o molde da vista para cortar a vista em tecido. A vista pode ser aplicada na bainha da capa e o forro ficar flutuante na bainha ou então pode ser unido à vista.
3 – Line the cape and apply the hem facing; this means that you should cut the fashion fabric using the pattern full length and then cut off the hem facing pattern; cut the facing on fashion fabric and cut the lining using the remaining cape pattern. If you chose this option you can leave the lining free-hanging or stitch it to the hem facing.

Neste projecto optei pela opção 2, pelo que usei o molde INTEIRO para cortar a capa em tecido e no forro. O primeiro passo é então coser desde os ombros até à bainha tanto nas partes em tecido como em forro, obtendo assim duas capas iguais em tamanho. Estas capas devem sobrepor-se com o lado de avesso para fora. A orla da bainha é cosida, unindo assim as duas capas. Agora para fazer a abertura por onde passa o cinto, o truque é coser entre os dois traços que estão indicados no molde da frente, na orla da frente, perto da bainha (as capas ainda estão do lado do avesso):
I went with option two for my cape, so I cut a FULL cape in both taffeta and lining. The first step on every option is stitching the cape shoulder/side seams on both fabric and lining (if you're lining the cape!); you get two identical full length capes (from now on, instructions apply for option two only). Place them right sides facing each other; stitch the hem edges together (grade and notch on rounded areas); now, on the front vertical edges stitch BETWEEN the two notches near the hem; do not stitch beyond these notches.

A seguir a rematar as pontas desta costura, golpeia-se junto aos extremos, como podem ver na figura:
Knot and finish both thread ends securing them (or stitch backwards) and clip at the notches:
Antes de virar a capa devem golpear também os valores de costura da bainha nas partes redondas. Agora virando a papa para o direito, a orla da frente fica assim (visto do lado do forro; os alinhavos facilitam a passagem a ferro da beira e também servem de guia para o pesponto que se vai fazer a seguir):
This is what you get (front edge, lining side) when you turn the cape to the right side; the front edges all have SAs EXCEPT at the slit opening! (the bastings are there to keep the hem edge from sliding when pressing and topstitching).
Depois de passar a ferro e pespontar a bainha, a capa é alinhavada nas orlas da frente do colete (que deve ter as costuras dos ombros fechadas, mas as laterais abertas) e ao decote. Falta coser as partes centrais na frente (onde depois ficam os botões e as casas), prendendo a capa ao longo da costura. Cuidado para não prenderem a abertura do cinto na costura!
Press and topstitch the cape hem and baste the cape (the remaining unstitched lining/fabric edges are treated as one from now on) to the fabric vest along the side front edges and the neckline. These edges (vest's and cape's) are treated as a single fabric layer from this point on. Now its time to sew the front panel to the front side panel, catching the cape in between but not catching the slit!

Observem no molde como tudo encaixa e a marca número 5 onde a beira da capa deve coincidir; vejam também o ângulo onde começa o decote (marca número 8):
Observe how everything matches on the pattern (SAs were not included); notch number 5 marks the hem edge placement for the cape; note the inward angle on the next picture because this is where the neckline begins (notch 8):

Depois de unir as partes centrais da frente ao colete, as orlas da costura devem ser assentes na direcção dos painéis centrais e pespontados pelo direito. Temos o corpo do colete em tecido pronto, com as costuras laterais abertas! Podem ver a abertura pronta:
After this you should press the SAs to the front panel and topstitch on the right side. You have now the fabric shell completed together with the cape (side seams still open)! Here is the finished belt slit:

Bolsos com pestana – Single-welt pockets

Este é o primeiro passo de construção da capa que considero de alguma dificuldade. As instruções da Burda estão bem escritas mas resumidas e sem figuras para acompanhar o procedimento, por isso algumas de vocês podem achá-las confusas. Os bolsos da capa têm a dificuldade adicional de os bolsos serem inclinados, o que implica ter algum cuidado na forma como se posicionam as funduras dos bolsos (ou podemos acabar com as funduras a “sobrarem” por baixo da bainha!).
This is the first defying construction step for the cape. BWOF's instructions are well written but they are summarized and they lack line drawing diagrams to clear out some of the steps; that's why many people find them confusing. The welt pockets on this cape are slanted and this increases the chances of error because the correct placement of the pocket bags must be assured during construction (if you make a mistake you might end up with a pocket bag that extends beyond the hem!).

Os moldes da Burda são bastante precisos; reparem que o molde da fundura de bolso tem duas linhas paralelas na abertura; isto acontece porque uma fundura deve ser maior que a outra pois uma é cosida por cima da abertura e a outra por baixo, aos valores de costura da pestana; o mesmo molde serve então para cortar duas funduras diferentes mas para facilitar a distinção entre as duas, vou manter as duas linhas de alinhavos na maior. Temos então as seguintes partes, incluindo a pestana já pronta (a zona da abertura deve estar reforçada com entretela):

BWOF's patterns are very precise; notice the two parallel lines at the pocket bag pattern; the two lines are there because the pocket bag pieces (front and back) should be different because one is stitched at a higher position (back piece) than the other (front piece). I will keep the two basted lines at the bigger piece so you can easily tell them apart. These are the pieces needed for a welt pocket, including the finished welt (the opening placement area should be interfaced):

Reparem nas linhas que acrescentei nas fotos que indicam onde se deve coser cada parte. A lilás têm umas elipses que vos mostram para que lado deve ficar a fundura do bolso depois de terminada. Neste caso cortei ambas as funduras no tafetá, que é tão fino como o forro mas normalmente a fundura maior é cortada no tecido e a fundura mais pequena em forro.
Note the extra colored lines at the pictures; they serve the purpose of indicating which piece is stitched where; the violet ellipses show the orientation of the pocket bags towards the hem of the vest. I cut the pocket bags from the wrinkled taffeta but normally you would cut the back piece (bigger) in fashion fabric and the front piece (smaller) in lining fabric. The taffeta is as sheer as the lining so I decided to go with both pieces in taffeta.

Começa-se com a parte da frente no lado direito e por coser a pestana e a fundura maior como indicado pelas linhas de costura do bolso:

You should start by positioning the front side panel right side up and placing the welt and the back pocket bag as indicated by the colored lines:
A próxima foto mostra a fundura maior a ser presa com alfinetes (com cuidado para não apanhar os valores de costura da pestana, que já está cosida):
The next picture shows the back pocket bag pinned so the stitching lines overlap and match (the welt is already stitched in place so you should be careful so its SAs are not caught by this new stitching line):
Ao coser à máquina é melhor coser no avesso da parte da frente, onde são bem visíveis as linhas dos alinhavos que marcam por onde se deve coser (notem a costura já feita que une a pestana, indicada pela seta azul):
It helps if you stitch with the wrong side of the vest up; it's easier to see the basted lines (or any other markings you have). Note the parallel stitched line which corresponds to the welt placement line:
Agora vamos ter de cortar a abertura exactamente entre as duas costuras, cortando em triângulo nos cantos; vejam aqui no direito da frente:
Next step is cutting open in between the stitched lines, making sure you cut little triangles at the corners, exactly as shown by the red lines. This is the right side view:

E no avesso; ambas as figuras têm desenhadas a vermelho as linhas por onde se deve cortar; corta-se do avesso, com cuidado para não cortar os valores de costura do outro lado:
And this is the wrong side view; you should cut on the wrong side because it's easier to see what you're doing. Be careful not to cut the welt or the pocket bag on the other side!

Pela abertura passa-se o saco do bolso para o avesso; assenta-se a pestana para cima pelo lado direito; do lado do avesso os valores de costura da fundura são assentes para cima e os da pestana para baixo.
Slip the pocket bag to the wrong side through the opening; press the welt upwards on the right side. On the wrong side, the pocket bag SAs should be pressed upwards and the welt SA downwards.

Os pequenos triângulos na extremidade do corte da abertura são virados para o avesso e cosidos sobre a pestana, com a ajuda do pé calcador para fechos:
Turn the little triangles to the wrong side and stitch them to the welt, using a zipper foot:

Agora prende-se com alfinetes a outra fundura aos valores de costura da pestana. Notem que depois de assentes para baixo as funduras, o bolso não ultrapassa a linha da bainha mas ultrapassa a linha que vai unir esta parte à parte central da frente (onde ficarão os botões):
Next the front pocket bag is pinned to the welt SA. The violet lines show you the outline of the pocket bag when it will be facing down. If you place the pocket bags like this they won't go beyond the hem but instead they will extend to the front panel.

É assim que se cose esta costura, do outro lado (os valores de costura mais pequenos são da abertura e os outros são da pestana que está cosida à abertura):
The front pocket bag is stitched on the other side (see the pins in the previous picture; now they are facing down), and you can see the smaller SA (opening) and the welt SA previously stitched:

Depois de assentes para baixo as duas funduras devem coincidir; cose-se uma à outra fechando o fundo do bolso e acabam-se todas as orlas com um ponto de ziguezague. Os lados da pestana foram cosidos à mão ao painel lateral do colete, mas podem cosê-los à máquina. É assim que fica, do lado do direito e do lado do avesso:
As soon as you turn the pocket bags downwards, they should match in length; stitch around the pocket bags closing them and finish all SAs with a zigzag stitch. I handstitched the welt sides to the side panel but you can also stitch them by machine, close to the edge. See the right side view and the wrong side view or the finished single-welt pocket:

Apresentação da Capa/Colete – Presenting the Cape/Vest (Burda 08/07 Mod111)

Casaco-capa muito original e “fashion”, larga em cima e justa em baixo; a frente é de trespasse, tem um cinto feito com o mesmo tecido e bolsos de pestana à frente. São fornecidas duas versões, uma sem forro em tafetá engelhado e outra em gabardina forrada com tecido ao xadrez.
Very original and trendy cape-vest; wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, the double-breasted front, the epaulettes and the self-fabric belt are inspired by the classic trench coat. There are two versions, one in black wrinkled taffeta (unlined) and the other in sand colored gabardine, lined with plaid fabric.

Esquema – Technical drawing:
Fiz a versão B mas mantive o tecido original da versão A e ao forrar o colete e a capa utilizei tecido de forro normal; apenas as vistas da frente (que são cortadas a partir do mesmo molde que as partes centrais da frente) e a parte de baixo da gola foram feitas com o tecido escocês.
I made version B but I kept the version A look; instead of fully lining it with plaid I used regular lining fabric and used plaid for the front facing (cut by the same pattern as for the front panel) and the undercollar.

Entretela: Como o meu tafetá engelhado é muito fino, entretelei todas as partes do colete neste tecido com entretela termo-colante de malha fininha. As únicas peças que não foram entreteladas foram a capa e as partes em forro; as vistas da frente, a gola e pé da gola, as tiras dos ombros e o cinto foram igualmente entretelados. A entretela modifica um pouco a textura engelhada do tafetá, mas nota-se pouco e o resultado é satisfatório. Se o tecido não precisar de ser completamente entretelado devem ter o cuidado de entretelar a zona onde vai ficar a abertura dos bolsos, reforçar as cavas e o decote com entretela.
Interfacing: As you know from my previous projects using this fabric, the wrinkled taffeta is a sheer fabric so I interfaced the vest completely with thin knit fusible. The only pieces that weren't interfaced were the cape and the lining; the front facings, collar and collar stand, the epaulettes and the belt were all interfaced. This thin knit fusible slightly alters the wrinkled taffeta texture but it doesn't show much because the cape (which is not interfaced) covers most of it. If you don't fully interface the vest you should reinforce the pocket openings, the armholes and the neckline.

Este modelo é para costureiras de nível intermédio a avançado e é um projecto moroso e cheio de detalhes. Não tive qualquer dificuldade com as instruções da Burda (embora estivessem escritas em Francês e Francês não é uma língua que eu fale fluentemente, embora a entenda razoavelmente bem) mas reconheço que para quem não tiver bastante experiência a costurar da Burda pode achar as instruções confusas. No final tudo acaba por se encaixar e fazer sentido.
This is an intermmediate/advanced project, it's very time consuming and has many little details. I did well with the BWOF's instructions though they were written in French and my French is poor (but I can understand most of it) but again I'm used to sewing BWOF's patterns since I was 12. The welt pockets weren't a problem for me, since I have been sewing them in the past but bagging the vest was a first; I did alright by following the instructions and in the end it all fits together and make sense.

I think there are a few critical construction steps for this project:

-confecção dos bolsos de pestana – the welt pockets;
-confecção da capa com a abertura para passar o cinto – the cape and its belt-slit;
-coser o forro ao colete (ambas as partes em tecido e forro com as costuras laterais abertas) – sewing the lining to the vest (leaving the side seams unstitched on both shells);
-coser a gola com pé ao colete – setting in the collar with stand;
-virar o colete para o lado direito – turning the vest right side out;
- coser as costuras laterais – stitching the side seams on both fashion fabric and lining.

O meu tempo ultimamente tem sido pouco mas vou tentar explicar como fiz os passos mais importantes (têm é que ter alguma paciência). No final apresentarei fotos de mim com o colete/capa e os detalhes deste modelo, como tenho feito habitualmente. Fiquem bem!
