2015 Sewing Year in Review - Balanço das costuras de 2015

EN Summary: I didn't sew many garments in 2015 (I've made tree coats, three skirts, a draped top, a dress and a jacket) but I am proud of the quality standards of all these few garments. This year I ventured into pattern-making and made a self-drafted dress; I've also succeeded on making a Haute Couture Chanel inspired jacket for the first time. It was a great sewing year! Keep reading to find photos and links to the reviews of my 2015 sewn garments.

---

2015#9: The Little Black Jacket (Chanel inspired): wrap-up

2015#6 – The pleated shoulder dress sewing review – O vestido com ombro pregueado: sumário

Description: Close-fitting sleeveless dress with one pleated shoulder, round neckline, dropped shoulders, waist seam, center back invisible zipper and back vent for walking ease. The front bodice is cut on the bias for a more pleasing pleated effect. Dress has neckline and armhole facings and is fully lined. The dress concept was originally inspired in a model from Patrones magazine (click here). More photos of me wearing the dress were published on my personal style blog (click here)

The flower print Cassock coat Sewing Review (part 2) – O casaco Cassock florido: a confeção (parte 2)

(Click here for part 1 of this sewing review)

After stitching together all parts of the body of the coat, it’s time to tackle the collar; the pattern features different pieces for under collar and upper collar and the turn of the cloth is accounted for on the upper collar, but since ultimately it depends on the fabric used, it’s advisable to double check it. First I stitched and pressed the central seam of the under collar. The neckline on both the coat’s body and facings should be stay-stitched, and the SAs clipped, it will make the job of stitching the collar to these seams much easier. Then I stitched the under collar to the coat’s body and the upper collar to the facings, making sure the stitching line begins and ends exactly at the collar placement notches; finally I pressed the seams open. With right sides facing together, it’s easy to pin the neckline seam on both facings and coat so it overlaps exactly and then test the turn of the cloth.

Next step is stitching around the collar, joining under collar with upper collar; the stitching should end exactly at the collar placement notch (do not stitch over the pressed open SAs!) – see step 1, red dotted line, on the drawing bellow. Then stitch the upper front edge, again ending exactly at the collar placement notch and not stitching over any SAs. Clip the corner (step 2 on the drawing):

Notch all around the collar SAs as necessary and (with the help of a tailor ham and pressing point) press all the seams open. Turn everything to the right side and overlap the neckline seams. Prick-stitch these seams in the ditch by hand, baste all the edges favoring the upper collar and press. The collar is done:

---

After finishing the collar I moved on to the sleeves, stitching the back seam and ease stitching the interfaced sleeve-cap (two rows of long, loose tension needle thread stitches – stitch on the right side of the fabric so it’s easier to pull the threads on the wrong side for easing the sleeve cap):

---

Note how I notched and graded the SAs at the bottom of the sleeve, for bulk reduction (something to keep in mind on every sewing project):

---

Finally I stitched the sleeves under seam, turned the hem allowances in and pressed. I pinned the sleeves to the armholes, easing the sleeve cap; I stitched with the armhole side up, I feel this is more precise and helps with the easing on the sleeve side. Be careful not to form any evident puckers (if necessary unstitch and stitch again until the ease is smoothly distributed). Then, as per Paco’s tutorial on constructing a jacket the industrial way, I pressed open the seams around the sleeve cap (approximately 3 inches to each side of the shoulder seam), with the help of a tailor ham; this helps smoothing the ease and achieves a round shape, very typical of the Italian tailoring:

---

Then I stitched pre-cut sleeveheads to the armhole positioning them as seen in the photo bellow and stitching close to the armhole seam, on the SAs side:

---

I used small tailoring shoulder pads with back suppression (click here to know a little more about tailoring shoulder pads and how to correctly set them in):

---

Moving on to sewing the lining: the pattern has indications for cutting the lining and the front and back have their own exclusive pattern pieces, both with pleats for ease of movement.

---

I applied bias tape to the facing edge, as explained in this tutorial (with video), and then bagged the lining. The photos below show some details:

---

Conclusion: The Cassock coat fit is absolutely flawless and I am totally in love with the finished coat. I highly recommend this pattern because it’s a timeless classic coat, easy to fit because of all the vertical seams and fairly easy to sew. I also think this pattern is very versatile because with minimum alterations you can turn it into a jacket (with or without the collar), a vest (more or less fitted by adjusting some vertical seams) and you can also customize it with several details to make it uniquely yours (think belt or back tab, sleeve vents, patch pockets, etc.). It’s a super pattern in my opinion. This time I decided to make it the industrial way because I thought this fabric doesn't require much traditional tailoring techniques but I plan on sewing a tailored version for next winter.

---

More photos of me wearing the coat were published here; thank you all for following along this sewing journey with me!

The flower print Cassock coat Sewing Review (part 1) – O casaco Cassock florido: a confeção (parte 1)

This article is the first part of the sewing review for my most recent sewing project, the Cassock coat by Paco Peralta of BCN Unique patterns (check out his Etsy shop for this and a lot more wonderful patterns; you can click here for a previous article reviewing his patterns so you know what to expect when you order them). Most of these photos were taken with my cell phone and shared on Instagram, as I was sewing the coat; if you’re interested you can follow me @tany0471

---

The sizing with BCN Unique patterns doesn’t match usual Burda sizing; size 42 (which I used) corresponds to the following specifications:

SIZE 42: Bust 92 cm.(36"). Waist 74 cm.(29"). Hip 98 cm.(39").

Fabric required: 2,80 mts.1,50 mts.wide (3 yards. 55/59 inches wide)

Notions: Lining, interfacing (fusible or non-fusible), 4 buttons, thread and small shoulder pads.

Suggested fabrics: Flannel, double knits, tweed, lightweigtht wool, wool crepe, synthetics or silk suitings.

Materials used: I used printed cotton twill, acetate lining (1,8m – 1yd 3ft), two spools of thread, a pair of tailoring shoulder pads, 2,7m (2yd 3ft) pre-folded bias tape for the lining, a silver chain for the hanging loop, two types of fusible interfacing, pre-cut sleeve heads, reinforced fusible tape for the armholes and four vintage buttons.

---

First I pre-shrunken the fashion fabric by putting it in the dryer along with some damp bath towels (not all fabrics can stand this treatment; depending on the fabric, you can wet it and let it dry in the air instead), then I steam pressed it. If you’re not sure of the pattern’s fit you should sew a mock-up before cutting into your fabric. This pattern has no chest darts to be moved up or down and has a lot of vertical seams, so it’s easy to adjust the fit. Check the sleeve’s length and the coat final length too. The SAs and Hem allowances are included in the pattern so it will be ready to place on your fabric and cut around it. I made this coat without needing any alteration/adjustment. Bellow there’s a section of the cutting layout that I used:

---

Interfacing:
I used two types of fusible interfacing, both very supple though one is slightly stiffer:

---

Entretelas:

The interfacing map was the following (the dark blue corresponds to the interfacing on the left, the lighter blue corresponds to the interfacing on the right; the red lines represent the reinforced fusible tape and fusible stay tape along the front edge):

NOTE: if you want to make your own fusible tape to apply on the armholes, here’s an excellent tutorial (click here).

---

The first construction step was sewing the bound buttonholes; besides my tutorials on this technique that can be found under the link "Tutorial Index (English)" right bellow the blog header, there’s also Paco’s tutorial (click here).

---

Next I stitched the side panel/side front panel seam and sewed the in-seam pockets; besides my own tutorials, there’s also Paco’s extremely well illustrated tutorial on making in-seam pockets (click here).

---

Once the details are done, I started constructing the coat following the industrial method illustrated here; I stitched all the vertical seams, shoulder seams (not forgetting to ease the back shoulder) and the back facing to the front facing. The body of the coat was looking like this:

---

O corpo do casaco ficou assim:

In the next article I will address the collar, sleeves, and the lining. Stay tuned! Follow me on Instagram (@tany0471) for on the go updates!

No próximo artigo mostrarei a gola, mangas e o forro.

Today I want to show you guys some progress photos of my current sewing project. The coat is almost done, I only have to sew the buttonholes, stitch in the buttons and apply the shoulder pads (they are just roughly pinned in place at this stage).

---

The pattern is from Burda International magazine (April 1996, mod 912) and was originally a dress, but I decided to turn it into something that could double up as a spring coat too. I changed the front opening into a top down faux placket (it’s “faux” because there's actually a facing inside; the illusion of a placket is created by the fabric folding into a tuck and then top-stitched; the excess fabric introduced by the tuck was added to the pattern, of course).

---

 I also modified the collar shape, as you can see in the photo above (I was inspired by an old shirt pattern by Paco Peralta which offered a similar collar variation!);

---

Também modifiquei a forma do colarinho, como podem ver na foto acima (tirei a inspiração de um molde de camisa antigo do Paco que tinha uma opção de colarinho semelhante!);

The fabric (faux suede) has been a pain to work with when it comes to ironing: I need to use very low temperature setting and ALWAYS a press cloth between the iron and the fabric. I originally intended to use buttonhole thread for the top-stitching but after a few samples I've given up the idea (the larger needle needed with this kind of thread would not pierce this fabric easily). When dealing with several layers of fabric the stitch length shows some unevenness too, but this happened only because the fabric feed is increasingly difficult with so much bulk.

---

I hope to get the coat finished by the end of the week ( so I can start with Paco's new pattern next) so stay tuned!

---

2015#2 - The black&white flower print pleated midi skirt (BurdaStyle 03/2015 mod102)

Description: This pattern features a skirt with side invisible zipper extending through the waistband and six inverted pleats (three on the front and three on the back). The original pattern has patch pockets (which I omitted) and it’s shorter in length, sitting roughly above the knee (I added 6 inches to the skirt length, so mine become a midi-style length) and it's unlined.

---

Side and Back view / vista de lado e de trás:

Original Model and line drawing / Modelo original e diagrama:

Alterations: Omitted the pockets, added 6 inches to the length and lined the skirt creating a floating hem. I also widen the waistband (a wider waistband seems more balanced with a longer skirt)

Fabric used: printed basket weave cotton blend; the print has a brushstroke aspect, I knew it would become a pleated midi skirt the moment I saw it.

---

Details / Detalhes:

The invisible zipper shows a bit at the waistband and that's only natural because of all the fabric layers in that area.
---
In the above photo the waistband finishing and the lining is visible on the wrong side of the skirt (the hook&eye wasn't set in at this point, but you can see it next); I cut the waistband along the fabric length and kept the selvage, so I could use it as finishing on the wrong side of the waistband. The lining was hand stitched to the zipper tape.
---
The floating hem detail / O detalhe da bainha flutuante:
To be able to form the pleats holding lining and fashion fabric together AFTER stitching the lining to the hem allowance (the hem allowance isn't stitched to anything but the lining, that’s why it’s “floating”) and still keep the invisible zipper extending to the waistband I had to adjust the construction step order as follows:

1 – Partially stitch the waistband (which should be pressed folded) to the left edge of the skirt’s panels (stitched for 2 inches or so) so the first step is inserting the invisible zipper to the left side-seam. The SAs should be reinforced with interfacing as on ever zipper insertion. The waistband junction SAs should be pressed up before inserting the zipper.
2 – Stitch the side seams (both skirt panels and lining panels, don’t forget the zipper opening on the lining) – also note that the lining hem allowance should be 5/8”
3 – Press the skirt’s hem allowance up, just to form the crease; stitch the lining to the skirt at the hem, right sides facing; press the lining up towards the waist and baste both skirt and lining together along the waist edge; trim lining if necessary so lining and skirt are now joined as one single cloth.
4 – Form the pleats (baste or pin them in place).
5 – Stitch the waistband to the skirt (the edge near the zipper is already stitched).
6 – Press (grade, trim) the allowances towards the waistband, turn the waistband to the wrong side of the skirt along the crease and stitch “on the ditch” along waistband seam.
7 – Hand stitch lining to the zipper band; set in the hook&eye.
---

Conclusion/Notes: The skirt waist is a little tight and I remember having to slightly ease the skirt to the waistband; I suspect the waistband pattern, which is supposed to include SAs, doesn't include it after all. I will have to measure the skirt pattern minus the pleats and confront it with the waistband to be sure. If you make this skirt be sure to double check this measurement, Other than this, I really love the outcome and the skirt is very fashionable and pretty!
---

2015#1 - Retro-style fuchsia coat (BurdaStyle 2014-11 mod111) - Casaco Fucsia estilo retro

Description: Lined overcoat with large collar, princess seams and back vent, slightly flared from the hip down, two-button closure on the front. This pattern was featured with illustrated instructions, which makes it easier to construct.

Pattern used: BurdaStyle 2014-11 mod111 (cut size 38)

---

Molde: BurdaStyle 2014-11 mod111 (cortei o 38)
Alterations: Added in-seam side-pockets and bound buttonholes.

---

Alterações: Acrescentei bolsos metidos nas costuras laterais e fiz casas ce botão avivadas.
Fabric: Boiled wool of some sort (it doesn't ravel)

---

Tecido: Lã fervida (não desfia)
Construction: Followed BurdaStyle's instructions for the most part, except for the interfacing (you can check the details on my previous post - link), A few notes to consider: this coat has no shoulderpads and the sleeves are narrower than usual BurdaStyle coats.

---

The in-seam side pockets / Os bolsos metidos na costura:

Front closure detail / Fecho da frente:

 The hem/lining/facing intersection / A interseção da bainha/forro/vista:
The back vent / A racha atrás:

And finally the hanging chain loop and my label / E para acabar, a corrente de pendurar e a minha etiqueta:
Conclusion: A very nice pattern, dresses quite well and is fairly easy to make, I highly recommend it!
