Fato em "Príncipe de Gales" – "Prince of Wales" Pant Suit

No ano passado fiz dois fatos, este é um deles. A jaqueta e os corsários fazem parte de um conjunto que saiu na Burda 09/2006 (cliquem aqui). Deste conjunto fiz o casaco (versão mais curta), as calças à Marlene Dietrich e a camisa (as calças e a camisa mostro-as mais tarde); ainda me falta fazer o boné, a gravata e o colete para completar o conjunto.
I made two pant suits last year and this is one of them. The jacket and the knickers belong to a set of matching coordinates that was featured in BWOF 09/2006 (click here). From this set I’ve also made the Coat (shorter version), the Marlene Dietrich style trousers/pants and the shirt (both trousers and shirt will be reviewed later); I still want to make the cap, the necktie and the vest in that set.

Descrição: Jaqueta e corsários estilo masculino: no modelo original as orlas da jaqueta, os bolsos e as cotoveleiras são desfiadas; a jaqueta coordena dois tipos de tecido, tem bolsos de chapa, cotoveleiras e punhos aplicados; os corsários têm punhos nas pernas, cós aplicado e bolsos na frente.
Description: Jacket and knickers both men’s-style; the original model features ravelling edges on the jacket (front edges, hem, pockets and elbow patches are all ravelling); the jacket combines too coordinating fabrics, there are wide lapels, patch pockets, elbow patches and cuffs; the knickers have leg cuffs, waist band yoke, front zipper and buttons, also two front pockets.

Tecido usado: este fato coordena dois tecidos combinados; nas lapelas, bolsos, punhos e cotoveleiras é usado tecido "Pied de Poule", no restante usei tecido ao xadrez "Príncipe de Gales", de forma fiel ao modelo original. A jaqueta é completamente forrada.
Fabric used: this set uses two coordinate fabrics for the jacket: for the lapels/front facings, patch pockets, cuffs and elbow patches, houndstooth fabric is used; for the remaining jacket and knickers, glen checks (we call it Prince of Wales). The jacket is fully lined.

O tecido Pied de Poule comportou-se de forma óptima, é um tecido firme e que mantém a sua forma; quanto ao tecido Príncipe de Gales não posso dizer o mesmo, pois deu-me bastantes problemas. Como sempre faço, tratei os tecidos, neste caso lavei-os num programa suave para encolherem antes de os costurar. Depois deste tratamento o tecido Príncipe de Gales ficou demasiado mole e macio, tornando-se difícil que mantivesse a sua forma, mesmo depois de lhe aplicar a entretela; também se engelha com muita facilidade, como podem ver nas fotos anteriores do fato. Além destes problemas, este tecido não tem um xadrez regular, sendo muito difícil de acertar os quadrados nas costuras.
The houndstooth fabric behaved very well when handled; unfortunately I can't say the same for the glen checks fabric. As usual I pre-treated both fabrics; I washed them both on a gentle cycle, left them to dry outside and pressed them before taking them to the cutting table. After being treated this way, the glen checks fabric turned out too soft and it wouldn't hold its form as it should be. Even after being interfaced, this fabric tends to wrinkle a lot (see the pictures of me wearing the suit). Also the checks aren't regular so I had a hard time trying to match them.

Tamanho: para a jaqueta tracei um 40 (agora arrependo-me porque um 38 teria ficado melhor) e para os corsários tracei um 38.
Size: ranging from 34 to 44, I traced a 40 for the jacket (which I regret, a 38 would do just fine) and a 38 for the knickers.

Modificações: Mantive-me fiel ao molde e ao estilo do modelo original excepto nas orlas desfiadas; preferi costurar este casaco pela maneira tradicional. Com a jaqueta vestida notei que talvez conseguisse melhorar o cair nas costas se ajustasse um pouco na cintura (isto aconteceu talvez pelo tamanho ser demasiado grande para mim); é uma coisa que ainda terei de emendar neste casaco.
Pattern/model alterations: I kept the original model style lines except for the ravelling edges; with the jacket on I noticed it needs a small sway back adjustment, perhaps because this size is too big for my figure; I will fix the back in the near future.

Vou mostrar-vos algumas fotografias com os detalhes que considero mais importantes, essencialmente tentando mostrar como consegui que os quadrados jogassem e coincidissem na maior parte das costuras. Este combinar dos quadrados só se consegue com muita precisão ao cortar as peças do molde; o tecido é cortado estendido em vez de dobrado ao meio, com o direito para cima e as peças do molde são cuidadosamente distribuídas para que nas costuras os quadrados coincidam. Também há outros pormenores a ter em consideração, como manter uma risca vertical exactamente no meio das costas e no meio da frente, mas vou chamando a atenção para esses detalhes à medida que for mostrando as fotos.
Now I will show you some pictures with all the details I consider relevant for the making of this suit, mainly I want to show you how I managed to match the plaids; the matching of the plaids is better achieved if the fabric is cut single layered instead of folded in half; the right side is facing up and the pattern pieces are carefully placed so that the vertical/horizontal stripes match on almost every seam. There are also other details to take into account, like keeping a vertical stripe on the CF/CB seams but I will explain this as I show you the detail pictures.

A jaqueta: The jacket:

Frente: notem que o meio da frente coincide com o meio de uma risca vertical, de forma a combinar ambos os lados da jaqueta quando esta está abotoada; podem ver também como o xadrez das mangas mantém as linhas horizontais alinhadas com as linhas horizontais da frente; notem também a simetria da gola:
Front: note that the CF line matches the middle of a vertical stripe so both left and right fronts match exactly when the jacket is buttoned; also see how the horizontal lines on the sleeves are aligned with the horizontal lines on the jacket front; another important detail is the symmetry of the collar:

Costas: mais uma vez notem a simetria das costas, com o centro alinhado numa risca vertical; a gola não coincide com o padrão das costas porque achei mais importante garantir o seu aspecto na frente do casaco. Se alinhasse atrás não obtinha um resultado tão equilibrado na frente. As mangas são constituídas por duas folhas, na foto não se consegue notar isso bem porque os quadrados estão perfeitamente alinhados.
Back: once more note the CB alignment and the symmetry between left and right back; you can see here that the collar is not matching the checks on the back but this is so because I thought that it would be more important to balance the front edges on the collar. There is a back seam on the sleeves but you can't see this easily because of the checks perfect alignment.

Podem ver a frente e o cós de encaixe abotoado; notem o alinhamento horizontal e vertical dos quadrados, que coincide perfeitamente, inclusivamente nos bolsos que mal se notam:

Conclusão: este foi o meu primeiro projecto em tecidos ao xadrez; foi uma óptima experiência de aprendizagem para mim e quanto aos resultados, só não me considero 100% satisfeita por causa do tecido Príncipe de Gales, que engelha muito ao usar e não mantém a forma como deveria para uma jaqueta deste género; Também tenciono apertar um pouco as costas do casaco, de forma a proporcional uma linha mais justa atrás. Em breve mostrarei as calças e a camisa que fazem parte deste conjunto. Fiquem bem!
Conclusion: this was my first plaids project; it was a wonderful sewing learning experience for me; I don't say I'm 100% satisfied with the end result mainly because of the Prince of Wales fabric, I think it's poor in quality and I should have waited to find a better fabric, but I was too eager to make this suit and I used what I found available at the time. Also I will fix the jacket back for a better fit in the near future. Happy sewing everybody!

O tecido usado é uma espécie de sarja de algodão/lycra com elasticidade na largura e encolheu bastante na primeira lavagem antes de cortar; também largou alguma tinta vermelha, mas depois de lavado ficou mais suave e bastou passar com bastante vapor para ficar com um aspecto perfeitamente liso. Cortei as calças um pouco mais curtas e acrescentei-lhes uma beira em croché na bainha:
The fabric is stretch cotton/lycra twill, and it shrunk a lot on the first wash. This fabric became softer and easier to handle after being washed; all it took was a good steam pressing before cutting. I shortened the hem and I added a crocheted lace I made:

The pattern was redesigned from a 1950 dress from a collection of a Dutch museum and a woman could order that pattern and make a red dress. There are pictures from all over the world. Costura 2006: Uma camisa rasgada - 2006 Sewing Projects: The Ripped Organza Blouse

Estas são as duas únicas fotos da blusa em organza vermelha sem o rasgão que fiz da primeira vez que a usei. As fotos foram tiradas com o telemóvel, daí a falta de qualidade e a cor adulterada (a camisa é vermelho vivo, embora não pareça nas fotos).
These are the only two photos where this blouse shows without damage. They were taken with my cell phone so don't expect much quality (the blouse's true color is bright red and the picture doesn't show that).

Houve várias coisas que correram mal quando fiz esta camisa; era a primeira vez que trabalhava com este tipo de tecido, e também a primeira vez que tentava usar a minha corta-e-cose acabada de comprar. Por esse facto as costuras não ficaram perfeitas, os acabamentos em geral poderiam ter sido muito melhorados se já tivesse alguma experiência em lidar com este tecido.
There were several things that went wrong when I was making this blouse; this was my first time sewing organza and also my first attempt to use my new serger. The seams weren't as well finished as I would like them to be and I think I can do a much better job if I make this shirt again.

Reparem nos feitios feitos com tubinhos de tecido; estes tubinhos são feitos com tiras cortadas em viés, dobradas em dois e cosidas ao longo do comprimento; depois são viradas com a ajuda de uma agulha de tricô e rematadas nas pontas; com a camisa no manequim, prendi as tirinhas com alfinetes e depois cosi-as à mão à camisa, pelo lado do avesso.
Note the embellishment made from little bias tubes; first I cut several organza bias stripes, folded them lengthwise and stitched along the edge; I turned them over using a knit hooked needle. I stitched these bias tubes to the sleeves before closing their seams; the body was another story: I wanted to know exactly where to place them, so I finished the body first and dressed the dressform with it; I pinned the tubes on the blouse very carefully and then I hand stitched them on the wrong side of the blouse.

Apesar de todas as dificuldades, a camisa ficou muito bem e gostei muito de me ver com ela. Guardei-a para estrear numa ocasião especial, por isso ficou guardada durante algum tempo… Lembro-me perfeitamente do dia em que a usei pela primeira (e única) vez: foi no dia a seguir a ter recebido a notícia da minha promoção a quadro superior (penso que já vos contei que tirei o curso como trabalhador-estudante e que só o terminei em Junho do ano passado). A camisa pelo seu tom vivo fica muito bem com gangas e foi assim que me vesti, corsários de ganga, top de alcinhas vermelho e a camisa. Senti-me mesmo bem nesse dia, bem, pelo menos até a altura em que rasguei a camisa… Foi quando guardava os sacos de mercearia no fundo da mala do carro; ao alcançar o fundo da mala num movimento brusco senti um rasgão nas costas e imediatamente soube que a camisa estava irremediavelmente estragada… O que me passou na cabeça na altura não consigo descrever; só vos digo que não toquei na máquina de costura durante algumas semanas. A camisa, escondi-a longe da vista no fundo do guarda-fatos e só recentemente a fui buscar porque resolvi fazê-la outra vez, desta vez com outro tipo de cuidados mais adequados ao tecido. Infelizmente a organza vermelha tinha esgotado, por isso a próxima versão desta camisa será em castanho dourado.
Apart from all the difficulties, this blouse turned really well, I really liked to see myself in it. I saved it for an especial occasion and that occasion came last year when I was promoted. I remember exactly what I was wearing on that day: blue jeans, a red tank top and this blouse; I was feeling great, at least until the time when I was reaching to the bottom end of my trunk with some heavy bags of groceries in both hands. The sound of ripping made me freeze… I think most of you can imagine what was going on in my mind then. When I got home, in tears, I hid the blouse away and I was unable to sew for several weeks. It was only recently that I felt capable of looking at it again and then I decided to make another one, as soon as I could. The red organza was out of stock so golden brown it will be.

Later in the evening I'll take some more shots of the ripped blouse so you can see the damage and its true color (I'll update this blog entry). I must warn you: you may feel depressed just by looking at the pictures.

Burda 12/2005: Jaqueta 112 - BWOF 12/2005: Jacket 112

Fiz este casaco para usar com o vestido 105, revisto na entrada anterior. Gostaria de agradecer a todas os comentários simpáticos que me dedicaram nesse vestido, para mim a vossa opinião conta muito!
I made this coat to match the BWOF 12/2005 Gown reviewed previously. I also would like to thank the sewers and friends that visited for their nice comments on the dress. They mean a lot to me.

Descrição do modelo: Preciosa e graciosa, esta jaqueta tem um certo ar dos anos cinquenta, para o qual contribuem as suas linhas de estilo, como a gola larga e descida nos ombros e as mangas a três quartos justas. É um modelo simples e glamoroso!
Model description: Precious and graceful, the flair of the fifties is present on this tailored cocktail jacket. Its style elements, broad scarf collar and narrow tree-quarter sleeves, really worked together into achieving the fifties look. Simple and glamorous!

Mais uma vez, os tamanhos vão do 34 ao 42 e tracei um 38 com um ligeiro ajuste nas costas à altura da cintura. Este molde tem nível de dificuldade *** em 5 (Avançado).
Pattern size range goes from 34 to 42 and I traced a 38 with a slight sway back adjustment. This pattern is rated *** (out of five stars) on difficulty level (Advanced).

O tecido usado foi um poliéster engelhado, com bordados em ponto ziguezague, cuja cor e estilo achei que ficariam bem com o vestido. Fiquei muito surpreendida pelo facto do tecido não ter perdido o efeito engelhado ao entretelar e ao assentar a ferro.
I don't know the right English name for this fabric, it's a kind of embroidered polyester, and it has a nice shine and wrinkle effect (if someone knows the proper name to this fabric, please tell me…). It was surprisingly easy to interface with fusible and to press (I applied light pressure), it didn't loose the wrinkled effect at all.

A pedido da Stacy adicionei uma foto minha a usar o vestido e o casaco. Foi tirada depois do casamento; o vestido estava bastante amachucado pois passei várias horas sentada no casamento. Peço desculpa pela foto sem cabeça, mas sou um pouco paranóica em relação a colocar fotos da minha cara na Internet.
At Stacy's request, I added a new photo taken just after the wedding (that's the reason of all those wrinkles on the dress: I spent several hours sitting down). The photo was taken from a high to low perspective, so I guess I look smaller too :). I ask for your indulgence on the headless photo (I hate them as most of you do); a friend and co-worker of mine once was a victim of a poor taste joke that got out of hand involving a picture of her that was tempered with and got out to the internet, so I am a little paranoid about posting pictures of my face now.
