Burda Internacional: Vestido "tulipa" – Burda International: Tulip Dress

UPDATE: Eu a usar o vestido:
UPDATE: Me in the dress:
ATTENTION: Long post with lots of photos (to be updated later with a picture of me wearing the dress).

As próximas fotos mostram o modelo original e o esquemático deste vestido:
The model is from one of my Burda International magazines (Spring/Summer 91). This dress features a crossed over bodice and a tulip skirt, all shaped with horizontal pleats on the bodice and vertical pleats on the skirt; the short sleeves also have pleats shaping the sleeve heads. The center back closure is performed by a regular zipper. Next pictures show you the original model photo and the line drawing for this dress:

Material – Notions and Fabric:

Polyester black and white printed fabric, a 25 inch invisible zipper (aprox.), Alterfil thread for seaming, Serafil thread for the serger and very thin non-woven fusible interfacing for the hem facings.
Alterações ao modelo original - Alterations to the original model:

Instead of the regular zipper I used an invisible zipper 2 inches longer than required.

The original model is supposed to have small shoulder pads and since I didn't want this dress to have shoulder pads, a small alteration to the pattern was needed. This is a very easy alteration that consists on lowering the shoulder slope, taking off the extra height needed for the shoulder pad: consequently the sleeve head must be shortened too to fit the new armhole. For knowing how much the shoulder slope should be lowered, the safest method is comparing the shoulder line with a known and well fitted pattern (for this purpose I'm using the pattern from the red linen dress which is designed with no shoulder pads and fits perfectly on my shoulders):
The picture above shows the back but the same alteration is performed on the front. After this the sleeve head height must be adjusted by the same amount:
In the previous picture you can see the amount to be cut off from the sleeve head so it fits the new armhole.

This dress is fairly easy to make but there are a few details that I want to highlight:

And here is the upper end:

Princess-seams: these are the rounded vertical seams that shape the bodice to the chest:
To achieve perfect results I followed a few tips; first I stay-stitched the curved seams on both sides (side and center panels). Then I pinned the inward seam with the outward seam (right sides facing each other) but first I clipped the inward seam and notched the outward seam to achieve a smooth curved seam; when stitching, the longer seam (side panel) should be facing down next to the feed dogs. Pressing this seam correctly is very important: after pressing along the stitched line I steam pressed the seam open using my tailor ham. The next picture shows the wrong side (the print on the fabric makes it hard to see the detail but with a little effort you van see the pressed open seam):
Hems: The hem on the rounded front hedges is constructed differently than the hem on the back; the front hem is faced using cut-to-measure facings. These facings are interfaced with very thin fusible and I didn't interface the SAs on the facing. The facings are folded to the wrong side at the same time as the hem on the back and the edge is turned-under on both the back and the front hems. To achieve this, the side seams are stitched after the facing is attached to the front edges, sewing the side seam along the facing together with the back hem allowance. Next you can see the side seam on the wrong side; to the left is the back hem and to the right is the front faced hem:
Veja o aspecto no avesso:
Neckline edge finishing: for the neckline I used folded self-fabric bias strips (see more details on this technique here). The difference in this case is the fact that I didn't topstitch the edge; instead I carefully pressed the bias strip to the wrong side (after edgestitching, of course) and tacked it only to the shoulder SAs. The result is a very smooth neckline edge that stays naturally turned to the inside. See the wrong side in the next picture:
The stitching line is in fact the edgestitching that holds the SAs to the bias strip and it's not visible on the right side. When lifting the bias strip you can see that the SAs are trimmed and zigzagged under the strip:
Here is the front pleats detail:

This is a classic and elegant dress that I intend to wear on a religious wedding ceremony by the end of September. I still have to look for the shoes, purse, hat, etc. and I think it will look fantastic with the right set of accessories. The pictures don't do this dress justice because the flashlight increases the print contrast, hiding the styleline details; this dress is much better "in person", believe me! I'm very pleased with the final outcome!
