A jaqueta roxa: terminada! - The purple jacket: finished!

Finalmente alguma paz e tempo livre para vos mostrar esta jaqueta!
Finally some peace of mind and free time to be able to show you this jacket!

The original model is from BWOF 09/2007:

Trata-se de uma jaqueta curta e solta com mangas raglan a 3/4 estilo anos 60, aperta na frente com molas no trespasse e tem bolsos de paleta.
This is a loose fitting jacket with raglan 3/4 sleeves, the front closure is made with large snaps and it has flap pockets on the front.

Tecido: Um tecido misto, 70% lã e 30% poliéster, grosso, embora leve e macio, sem elasticidade e com textura que lembra bouclé:
Fabric: A 70%wool 30% polyester blend, it's thick yet soft; it's a knit yet has no stretch at all. Its texturized surface reminds me of boucle:

Cortei o molde no tamanho 38 e não tive necessidade de fazer alterações. Segui as instruções de confecção, embora tenha acrescentado entretela termo-colante no sítio da abertura do bolso e também reforçado as costuras das cavas com fita de algodão. Para valorizar este modelo simples, confeccionei o forro com um vivo, bordei a dobra do forro nas costas, forrei as molas de pressão e acrescentei um vivo bordado a missangas na bainha e nas mangas.
I cut my usual 38 with no alterations at all; I followed the instructions for the most of it but I added a few steps like interfacing the pocket opening area and reinforcing the armhole seams with cotton tape for stabilization. To add value to this simple model, I made a lining trim, embroidered the back lining fold, covered the snaps and added a beaded trim to the hem and sleeve hem.

Os botões bola de metal envelhecido e as molas forradas (como não consegui achar forro na cor exacta do tecido, resolvi forrar as molas com um forro contrastante prateado e fazer um vivo interior com este forro também):

O vivo no forro (trata-se de uma tira cortada em viés no tecido de forro prateado, dobrada em dois, que é alinhavada na linha de costura do forro ao longo das vistas, ultrapassando a costura em 5mm):

The lining trim (it's made from a bias strip of silver lining folded in two lengthwise and hand basted to the facings, crossing the lining stitching line for 5mm):

Conclusão: Uma jaqueta que tanto pode ser usada no dia-a-dia como numa ocasião especial, muito prática e ao estilo anos 60 (a minha época favorita em termos de moda)! Relativamente fácil de confeccionar, penso que é um projecto ideal para quem nunca experimentou costurar uma jaqueta. Gosto especialmente do seu estilo retro e da cor lilás/púrpura que este ano está bem presente no meu guarda-roupa!

Conclusion: A jaquet that can be worn either on everyday life or on a special occasion, very sporty and 60's style (my favorite era for fashion)! It's relatively easy to make so I think this is an ideal first jacket project for those of you who have never sewn a jacket. I like its retro style and the violet/purple color that this year is very representative in my wardrobe!

Notas sobre a confecção de uma jaqueta (II) - Project notes on a jacket (II)

Sobre a confecção desta jaqueta há mais alguns detalhes que queria mostrar, incidindo essencialmente no que fiz diferente das instruções e porquê.
I want to show you a few more details on the making of this jacket, focusing on the things I did differently from the instructions and also why I did them differently.

O factor chave aqui é o tecido, que é bastante grosso, embora macio. Tendo esse facto em conta, em vez de assentar as pinças do peito a ferro para baixo como é referido nas instruções (a marca das pinças ia notar-se pelo direito, além de ficarem demasiado volumosas), depois de as coser cortei-as a meio até próximo da ponta e assentei-as a ferro abertas, sobre a minha almofada de alfaiate (também chamada de presunto de alfaiate); em alguns tecidos também se pode usar um palito enfiado na ponta que não foi cortada, para assentar melhor a ferro, mas neste caso não foi necessário devido às características do tecido:

The key factor to take into account in this case is the fabric, which is thick yet its hand is soft (it's a little spongy). Taking this fact into account, instead of pressing the darts towards the bottom like stated in the instructions (they would show on the right side and they would turn out too bulky), I cut them open stopping close to their tip (after they are sewn) and pressed them open using the tailor ham as a pressing surface; on some fabrics a toothpick could be used to better press the tip of the dart but in this case this wasn’t necessary due to the fabric's characteristics:

Outra coisa que fiz de forma diferente foi as paletas dos bolsos; a parte de dentro da paleta é em forro e a de fora em tecido. Depois de entretelar ambas as partes, em vez de as coser uma à outra e depois virar, preferi confeccionar as paletas à mão, como ilustram as próximas fotos:

I also diverged from the instructions on the making of the pocket flaps; their inside is made of lining and the outside of fashion fabric. After having both parts interfaced, instead of machine stitching them together and then turn them to their right side, I decided to sew them by hand, as illustrated next:

Assim garanto que o forro não se vai ver do lado de fora e também que o resultado é perfeito. Já tinha feito isto para as paletas do casaco Orwell, que além de tudo levam um debrum de cordão forrado. Os bolsos também foram confeccionados da mesma maneira (podem ver o passo-a-passo dos bolsos do casaco Orwell clicando aqui).

This procedure guarantees that the lining won't show on the right side and also guarantees perfect results for heavy fabrics. I did this before on the Orwell coat, where the pocket flaps had piped edges. The pockets were also sewn exactly as the Orwell coat's pockets (you can read the step-by-step tutorial if you click here).

As paletas ainda têm que ser passadas a ferro para remover as marcas dos alinhavos e dos alfinetes que usei para as confeccionar.
There's yet a final pressing to be made to the pocket flaps in order to remove the markings left by the thread tracing and pins involved in the process.

Entretanto já terminei esta jaqueta (e estou a usá-la hoje) e comecei o casaco leopardo, que usa o mesmo molde de base mas mais comprido, bolsos de pestana e mangas viradas. Da próxima vez espero mostrar fotos da jaqueta lilás concluída!
In the meanwhile this jacket is finished (in fact I'm wearing it today) and I've started the leopard coat, which makes use of the same pattern, except it's longer, has slanted welt pockets and turned up sleeve cuffs. Next time I will show you the finished purple jacket!

Notas sobre a confecção de uma jaqueta – Project notes on a jacket

Queridas amigas e amigos, a vida por aqui não tem sido fácil… Não tenho tido muito tempo para dedicar aos meus hobbies nem para visitar todos os blogs que gosto de ler (peço desculpa por isso). O que vos vou mostrar hoje, relacionado com o meu actual projecto de costura já aconteceu há uns dias e desde aí o progresso tem sido muito lento. Apesar da falta de tempo, sempre que posso gosto de ir mostrando o que vou fazendo e quem consulta a minha lista de projectos actualizada sabe que já estou de volta de um novo projecto: a jaqueta 106 da Burda de Setembro.
Dear friends, life hasn't been easy around here… I haven't been able to find time for my hobbies and for visiting all the blogs I like to read (I'm sorry for that). What I'm showing you today happened some time ago and since then my progress has been really slow. In spite of the lack of time I've made an effort to show you what I have done so far and those of you who consulted my updated list of future projects lately know that I'm currently working on a new sewing project: the jacket 106 from the September BWOF issue.

Next picture shows the process of thread tracing together with the interfacing placement on one of the jacket's fronts:

Aqui podem ver o resultado depois de colar a entretela a ferro e o molde já cortado para poder depois cortar o forro (a largura da vista foi descontada da frente para obter o molde para o forro):
Here you can see the final result after fusing the interfacing and the front pattern already set for cutting the lining (the facing width has been removed from the front to obtain the front pattern for cutting the lining):
Para as costas procede-se da mesma forma, descontando a largura da vista do decote.
It's the same for the back pattern; the neck facing width is cut off too.

Notem que as bainhas estão entreteladas com entretela cortada em viés (para ser mais fácil dar às tiras a forma ligeiramente arredondada da bainha), as vistas e o local da abertura do bolso também levam entretela. Nas costas e nas mangas as bainhas levam entretela da mesma forma; a tira de entretela ultrapassa a linha da bainha em 1cm; assim a bainha fica mais bem definida quando for assente a ferro para dentro e cosida. Neste caso este tecido é bastante grosso, por isso não há perigo dos pontos que cosem a bainha se notarem. Se não fosse assim a entretela que reforça a bainha podia ser estendida além da linha da bainha por mais do que 1cm, para que os pontos que seguram a bainha apanharem a entretela e não o tecido.
Note how the hem allowances are interfaced with bias cut interfacing (so the interfacing band can be shaped into the slightly rounded hem allowance), the facings are interfaced and also the pocket opening area is reinforced. The back and sleeve hem allowances are also reinforced the same way. The interfacing extends over the hem line for about 2/5 inch in this case; this should be done to obtain a professional looking and well defined hem line. In this case I'm using a thick and spongy fabric and the hem stitching won't show on the right side; if this isn't the case, the interfacing should extend a little more, enough for the stitches to catch the interfacing and not the fashion fabric.
