Olá queridas amigas! Voltemos ao casaco Orwell, onde já consegui avançar mais um pouco.
Hi dear sewing friends! Let's get back to the Orwell Coat, so I can show you my progress so far.

In the above pictures see the coat's body on the dressform; note the finished vertical and shoulder seams. In the next picture you can se the finished pocket detail:

Here are the back belts, also finished:

There are also a few details on finishing the seams that I would like to share with you; remember when I told you how important bulk reduction is to obtain the best final result? Back then I showed you how I grade seams when they are pressed to one side (see next picture):

The hem is another "bulky issue", when it crosses those seams. Imagine six layers of thick fabric plus the piping in that area… Yeah, bulky!! How can one minor this bulk? The answer is using some simple tricks and good sense; observe the next photo:

I clipped the SAs right at hem's fold line; then I pressed SAs to the opposite side, this way I can reduce bulk by half when the hem is stitched in place! When I press the hem, I also use a clapper or some kind of pounding device on this area (if you don't have a clapper, just use a heavy wooden block). I press the hem on the bulky area using lots of steam and then I hit it with the pounding device for a few times; next I steam it again and I place the clapper/wooden block on the seam's surface, keeping the pressure until the fabric gets cold and dry (I think 1 minute will be enough for this).
Este pequeno truque garante um acabamento perfeito nas costuras que ficam dobradas na bainha!
This little trick will guarantee the best results on bulk reduction.
Para a próxima vamos colocar a gola e as vistas da frente! Boas costuras!
Next I'll show you how I sew the collar and the facings! Happy sewing everybody!

Claudia
Hi Claudia! Thank you for your nice comment! Answering to your question: I couldn't get the pattern so I modified another Burda pattern to make it look like the Orwell coat. Read this blog entry where I explain how I did this: http://tanysewsandknits.blogspot.com/2007/01/casaco-orwell-2-o-molde-orwell-coat-2.html I hope this helps!
