EN: I've made this blazer before, back in 2006, together with the coordinated pants pattern in the same Burdastyle magazine (a pants pattern with wide shaped waistband with front button closure and buttoned cuffs, that can be seen in the original model's picture down below). At the time I used pinstriped anthracite suiting with a glossy face and top-stitching thread in matching color. It was not a pristine make by my standards, but I did wear it a lot (most people don't even notice these little "sewing imperfections"). I remember having issues with the fabric (the sleeve cap easing didn't came out perfect, for example) and I didn't like the fit on the back. After a few years the suit started to show some wear signs and I decided to toss it away, not without  salvaging the buttons first. I was planning to make the blazer again someday, because I really liked the style lines on the front. The time has finally come and for my current version I used superior quality wool suiting from my stash (a lot easier to work with), also in anthracite grey but no pinstripes. I also decided to alter the pattern, adding 2" to the length, make an elastic casing on the back and play with the top-stitching (using contrasting top-stitching thread in light gray), among other small changes.

O feitio da frente sempre me agradou bastante.

EN: The blazer's pattern is from Burdastyle magazine 02/2006, model 117A, cut on size 40 adding 2" to the length at the hem (my first version had the original length and it was cut on size 40 at the shoulders, bust and sleeves, narrowing to a 38 at the waist and hips). Notice the original has top-stitched collar, lapels and front edges; I omitted this on my new interpretation, but added a new row of top-stitching on the horizontal seam where the single-welt pockets are inserted.

---

EN: Here's how the pockets look up-close; the top-stitching was done with a jeans needle, using special purpose Gutermann jeans thread in light grey. I used a stitch-length of 3.5 and a 1/4" compensating foot on my industrial sewing machine:

---

EN: This blazer's lining is bagged (sewn almost entirely by machine), something I didn't know how to do back in 2006 (I used to stitch the lining by machine to the facings and finished the rest by slip-stitching by hand).

---

EN: Here's the side view; it's a lovely sleeve as you can see, much nicer than the sleeve on my first version, trust me on this. This time I used a few tricks I didn't know back then: interfaced the sleeve cap and inserted a "cigarrette", a sort of sleeve head made with a bias-cut folded self-fabric strip. In my next article there will be a photo-tutorial showing this technique, I know it will be appreciated :).

---

EN: Here's the cuff vent detail; I used two buttons instead of three:

EN: It's a fully functional buttoned vent and both corners are mitered:

EN: Remember when I mentioned I didn't like the fit on the back on my first version? Well, the pattern is to blame, having almost no shaping on the back, as opposite to the front; I could have added vertical darts, but instead I decided to make a wide-elastic casing like I saw in this Paco Peralta's tutorial "Chaqueta Confección Industrial"; just scroll down to photo#13 to see the casing on the wrong side and enjoy one of the best tutorials out there showing how to sew a jacket and bag a jacket's lining.

---

EN: For the pants I decided to use the TNT pattern that I've been using to make shorts, but now version C, the full length pants (Burda International 2/92 model 902C, size 40). I top-stitched the waistband, the hip-pocket openings, the fly-front zipper and the wide hems:

---

EN: This time I shaped the waistband end to match the blazer's pocket flaps:

---

EN: Here's the slanted hip pocket sewn into the front dart:

EN: To further customize the pants to match the blazer I made two single-welt pockets on the back (I debated with myself on adding top-stitching to the bottom seam of the pockets but decided against it in the end):

---

EN: I am really proud of my new suit, it came out just how I wanted. It's crisp and elegant and this time I can't point out any defect on it. I had to spend a few moments contemplating it and then pat myself on the back, lol! This is why I sew, this is who I am!

There was fabric left to make a matching skirt (no fabric shall be wasted, remember?). I will show it after publishing the sleeve head tutorial! Stay tuned!

---

You have made a wonderful suit! Your style additions really customize the look - the elastic back, and selective top stitching. Thanks for the details and link to the jacket how to. Looking forward to the sleeve head info. You always open my eyes to a design detail or technique! 😁
