EN: The pattern used is from Burda International 3/95 (one of my prized vintage special edition pattern magazines), model 945 cut in size 40. It comprises a close fitting lined coat with very original shirt collar with stand, round hem edges with side slits, single-welt vertical pockets at the hip and chest flaps. The coat's front closure features five buttons (I added one extra) and bound buttonholes. There are hem facings to better accomplish the round hem edges and the two-piece sleeves get a buttoned cuff vent on the original (I altered it into a round cuff vent). There's also a sheath dress that I will address in the next article of this series.

Contém um casaco justo com uma gola camiseira/pé de gola bastante original, bainhas arredondadas com rachas laterais, bolsos de abertura vertical com uma pestana e paletas no peito. A abertura da frente leva cinco botões (acrescentei mais um) e casas avivadas. As orlas arredondadas são conseguidas com vistas na bainha e as mangas de duas folhas levam uma abertura abotoada no modelo original (que modifiquei para abertura arredondada, sem botões). O conjunto tem também um vestido, o qual abordarei no próximo artigo desta série.
EN: The fabric is rustic wool from my stash. Regarding the inner structure, the fronts were fully interfaced with woven fusible interfacing and the front edges, neckline and armholes were taped for stability.

EN: The instructions say to fully interface the side panels but I don't think it was necessary with my type of fabric; I interfaced the upper section from the waist up, narrowing to 2" at the back seam. Additionally I taped the under-armhole seam. The bottom hem allowances in this case are 3/8" and are not interfaced (as opposed to a regular hem); they will get interfaced hem facings later in the construction.

EN: Since I only had six large buttons and a single smaller one, I decided to change the cuffs to a round shape slit without any buttons, matching the shape of the coat's hem and side slits. The cuffs of the sleeve were finished with a wide facing (wide enough to cover the slit length plus a small extra above the slit). The sleeve lining was cut removing the facing width from the sleeve pattern and adding enough length to form a small ease pleat. This is absolutely necessary, otherwise the sleeves would curl up while wearing the coat.

PT: Como só tinha seis botões grandes e um mais pequeno, decidi alterar os punhos do casaco para uma abertura arredondada à semelhança da bainha do próprio casaco. Os punhos levam assim vistas largas, largas o suficiente para cobrir a racha e mais um pouco. O forro é cortado descontando a largura da vista do punho, mas acrescentando um extra para formar uma pequena prega de folga (é absolutamente necessária, senão o forro iria repuxar as mangas ao usar o casaco.

EN: Here's a photo of the hem facings (excuse the poor quality, the photo was taken without natural light). I stitched the lining to the facings entirely by machine, except for a small section on the back used to turn the coat inside out. Those round seams are troublesome to stitch, the facing needs to be stay-stitched on the round edges, and the allowances clipped so the facings can accommodate to the round shape of the lining while stitching. It was challenging, but managed to succeed in the end. Again, a horizontal ease pleat should be included here, forming above the slit in this case.

PT: Têm aqui uma foto das vistas da bainha (desculpem a qualidade da foto, foi tirada sem luz natural). O forro foi cosido às vistas da bainha inteiramente à máquina, exceto numa secção (necessária para girar o casaco do avesso). As costuras de junção resondas não são fáceis de conseguir à máquina: as orlas arredondadas da vista têm de ser reforçadas com um pesponto e as margens golpeadas, para depois se conseguirem coser ao redondo do forro. Foi um desafio superado não sem algum esforço, mas tudo correu bem no final. Mais uma vez deve ser prevista uma prega horizontal no forro para o casaco não repuxar; neste caso a prega forma-se acima das rachas laterais.
EN: This pattern is pretty advanced (there's no illustrated instructions or separate pattern pieces for the lining, for example; those need to be figured out and drafted from the other pattern pieces; also remember that seam and hem allowances are not included so those must be added when cutting the fabrics). The construction process is elaborate too but the end result is well worth the efforts. It's a beautiful design, still modern in my opinion, and I can't wait for a chance to wear it!
