How to thread trace darts and other lines in the middle of the pattern? There are two ways: the first is cutting the dart off the pattern and thread trace its outlines as usual. If you make things this way it's better to secure with pins all around the dart and then cut the dart off, being very careful so the fabric underneath doesn't get cut by mistake.

The alternative is making small cuts with a craft knife (before the pattern is pinned to the fabric), more or less the size of your basting stitches, so later you can remove the paper pattern without it being basted to the fabric layers (if dealing with slippery fabric, pin all around the dart before thread tracing it). Watch the picture sequence and hopefully the pictures will do the talking for me:

First cut the pattern outlines and leave the darts for last:

Aqui está a pinça já marcada:
Here's the final thread tracing:
There's yet more to say about thread tracing so stay tuned!

Marcar com alinhavos (Parte 1) – Thread tracing (Part 1)

Viva Amigas!
Hi Friends! This post starts a series of two or three posts on the subject of thread tracing. This first part will address one of the simplest cases, which is the case when there aren't darts or any other special markings (besides notches or straight lines). I'll use one of the sleeve leafs as an example and in this case there are two layers of fabric with the pattern pinned on top (the fabric was cut following a layout where the fabric was folded lengthwise). The case where there is only one layer of fabric (when dealing with asymmetrical patterns or when matching patterns like plaids) is easier because the tailor tucks phase can be skipped and the outlines are thread traced on a single step.

Aqui temos a folha posterior da manga:
Here is the posterior leaf for the sleeve:

See that there are two layers of fabric (right sides facing each other):
This is important: the needle should follow a path perpendicular to the fabric at the corners, this way making sure that the corner is marked evenly and accurately on both layers:
To make the tailor tucks (this serves the purpose of reproducing the outlines on both layers at the same time) a long running stitch is performed but the thread is left loose on the top, forming those little thread loops you see in the picture:
When reaching a corner it's better if you insert the needle from top to down and perpendicular to the fabric:
When the thread comes to an end, just leave the loose end and start again. Always start leaving a little thread tail behind:

To tailor tuck the fold line on the sleeve hem (or any other line that crosses the pattern), just fold the paper pattern and pin it secured:
The notches are marked like this (make a thread loop):
Depois tiram-se os alfinetes e o molde:
When all the lines are stitched, the pattern is unpinned:
The two layers are pulled apart; see the threads in between? This is what the loose stitches are for:
The threads are cut in between, making it possible to separate the two layers, keeping the cut basting threads on each layer as a guide:

Finally the final thread tracing is done, using the little thread bits as a guide and removing them as you go:

If you thread trace corners like this, pulling the basting thread off after stitching the seam will be much easier later:
E aqui têm o resultado numa das partes:
Here is the final result on one of the sleeves:

This is the simplest case, where there are no darts, interfacing or any other special condition to deal with.

O molde da blusa e a marcação das casas de botão – The blouse pattern and the placement of the buttonholes

Before explaining the thread tracing technique (the way I like to do it), I want to show you a few things; first here is the remaining of my fabric after I cut all the pattern pieces:
Close to nothing! The remaining fabric is barely enough for performing the seam tests and the setting up of the SM!

Now take a look at the front patterns; don't you notice something weird?
I just found out that this Patrones pattern is marked on a strange way (wrong way, as far as I am concerned) for the buttonhole placement; in the next picture notice the original buttonhole drawn in green; notice its position, knowing that the vertical green line refers to the center front line:
In red you can see what I think is the correct way to place a buttonhole, in relation to the CF line. The buttonhole should cross the CF line no more than 1/8 inch towards the center. This is so because when wearing the blouse the buttonhole will shift to the side until it is stopped by the button shank (on horizontal buttonholes).

Notes to self: re-position the buttonholes according to what I explained above; measure the chosen buttons to determine the final size for the buttonholes; make sure that there is a button between the bust points and that all the buttons are evenly spaced; choose the button size according to the distance between the CF line and the front edge or adjust this distance according to the size of the buttons.

E é tudo por hoje!
This is all for today!

Apresentação do conjunto preto – Presenting the black ensemble

For this ensemble, I'll use a black poly/rayon blend taffeta that I bought a few months ago. The piece measures about 2,5 yds (1,64 yds wide) so my options for a suit are limited. The yardage is barely enough for what I have in mind: a short sleeve jacket/blouse (the magazine addresses this model as both) and a pair of knee length shorts (Cidell mentioned that these are called "City Shorts").

A blusa: The blouse:

O molde é da Patrones de Abril 2007 (Colección Fiesta):
The pattern is featured in the April 2007 Patrones (Colección Fiesta):
The original model is made out of wild silk; it features short sleeves with a back slit. The seams are topstitched and there is a placket with 4 buttons on the front. There are also self-fabric ties shaping the waist.

Black is a predominant color in my wardrobe and I already have several black garments, including jackets and blouses, so I'm thinking of turning this one into something a bit different than plain black. For the ties I will be using that black Italian silk organza that I bought from Cunha Rodrigues; I'm studying the possibility of using seashell white Madeira thread for topstitching and big mother-of-pearl buttons for the front closure; I must run some tests first to see if this works though.

This is the line drawing (altered from the original BWOF 09/2006 model that can be viewed here)
I altered the pattern used originally for these pants (I made them last year):
Before starting on the shorts I will review the pants and some of its interesting construction details. These pants match the Prince of Wales suit and I kept true to the original model and fabric (houndstooth fabric). I was very satisfied with this pattern so I decided to re-use it. The front was underlined with regular lining fabric from the waist to the knee; this technique serves the purpose of reducing wearing wrinkles. If you spend your working day sitting in front of a computer like I do, this is the technique for you! For the shorts I'll be using silk organza instead because it is more effective and also lighter. This technique is commonly used by tailors; instead of silk organza, cotton batiste can also be used for the same purpose.

Boas costuras, pessoal!
Happy sewing, guys!

Algumas considerações – A few considerations

I must say this: you guys are great! I want to thank all of you who visit and write so many words of encouragement! This makes me feel that I'm succeeding on spreading the sewing gospel around here!

As for future projects, ideas are queuing faster than I'm able to make them come true! As you know, I try my best to share with you all the relevant construction steps when making a garment but I also feel that there is no need to repeat myself as this "sewing journal" proceeds. I will dedicate my time and effort to trying to explain different techniques as I apply them and also give you an insight on those techniques I feel are subject for more doubts and questions. This is the case for "thread tracing" and "tailor tacks", so I will write a post addressing these subjects, showing you how I do it, why I do it, its advantages and disadvantages. I want to make this very clear: thread tracing alone won't make a beautiful and well fitted garment! What thread tracing does is making sure all the pattern lines and outlines are well reproduced on the fabric. You must make a good fitting and apply the better techniques (those that work for you) during the construction process; you must choose the right fabric, cut it correctly minding the grain and make it work as a whole. Thread tracing is a time-consuming technique; I do it because it calms me down and I while I'm thread tracing all kinds of ideas come into my mind; I visualize the finish garment, plan the better techniques, figure out what I'm going to do, on what order and to what purpose. It's my own "Zen" thing. There are many of you that are curious so I will try to explain how I do it using my next project as an example.

As for my next sewing project, I will present it later; I can tell you in advance that I'm making a small detour on dresses and I will make this one a suit instead. It's going to be a black suit (which is good for explaining the thread tracing technique) and I'm using a BWOF's pant pattern (I've used this pattern before) and a Patrones' jacket pattern. Sewing pants (or should I say knee length shorts instead) will provide the opportunity for sharing a lot of new interesting details; as for the jacket, the highlight will be on the pattern and the added silk organza details.

Até breve!
See you soon!

Vestido Jocavi: terminado – Jocavi Dress: finished

Aqui está:
Here it is:

This dress turned out great! Once again I'm very pleased with the Patrones patterns: not a single adjustment was made to the size 42 pattern!

Apresentação do modelo original e lista de material
Presenting the original model and notions

Addendum to the notions list: At first I was not planning to use Alterfil thread on this dress because I don't have the matching color (dark blue) for the fabric, so I was going to use the Serafil thread instead; when I was testing the seams I tried black Alterfil thread and the results were most satisfactory so I used this black Alterfil thread instead for seaming and kept the dark blue Serafil for the serger and topstitching because the color matches the fabric so well and the Serafil is so thin that becomes almost invisible.

O decote em V franzido - The gathered V-neckline

Viva Amigas!
Hi Friends! I finished this dress at 3h00am today, but I want to share some more construction steps before I show you the finished result.

After sewing the dress and the lining, I moved on to the shoulder straps and I was wondering what would be the best way to apply them to the dress. If you notice the original model, there are some gaps where the straps supposedly join at the front; I think this happens mainly because of the way the straps are joined together. I made two shoulder straps 1,5cm wide, as you can see:
Did you notice the chopsticks? I used them to press the seams open prior to turning the straps to the right side.

To avoid gaposing at the V-neck, I joined the two straps as a "v" too; you can see both sides (this detail will be hidden but I wanted to make it as neat as possible and also reduce bulk to its minimum):

Next I pinned the lining to the dress along the upper edge, right sides together, and stitched it; notice the center front:

Before turning the lining to the wrong side of the dress, trim, grade and clip SAs as usual:
After turning the lining inside, hand baste the edges to be topstitched next and press them:
This is how it looks after turning the V-neck edge (I don't know a better word for this) inside. It will be topstitched thus forming a "tunnel" to the straps. Pulling the straps is responsible for the V-neck gathering:

Don't forget to leave a little opening where to insert the other end of the straps on the back! When the final topstitching is made the straps will be secured in place. First you must try the dress on your body and determine the correct length for the straps.
Well, this was the tricky part about this dress; from now on all there is to do is topstitching the edges, hand finish the "V" vertex on the neckline, handstitch the lining to the zipper tape, topstitch the horizontal seam that joins the bodice to the skirt (thus catching the lining in place), hem both the dress and lining, finish the side slit, crochet the trim and apply it to the horizontal bodice seam! All the details, total time spent on the dress and finished dress will be up tomorrow, see you then!
