The dress - O vestido
EN: One of the versions of this dress pattern was featured on the cover of the Portuguese July 2018 BurdaStyle magazine and it immediately caught my attention.
---
EN: The dress is described on burdastyle.com as "wonderfully flattering and accented with a knotted detail at the neckline (I'd say gathered detail instead, because there's no knot), barely-there sleeves ("short dolman sleeves") and a fluid skirt panel". I'd also add, empire line bodice and knee level hem, slight V-line back neckline and center back invisible zipper. The original dress has the bodice lined (not the skirt).
---
EN: Here's the side and back view of the finished dress; I cut size 40 and added 1 1/2" to the hem so it would hit right below the knee on me (I have wide knees so I think it looks more flattering if the hem hits below, where the leg is thinner). The fabric used is printed cotton satin bought locally; I got two fabrics with the exact same print - cotton satin and silk satin - and originally planned sewing the bodice with the satin silk; yet I noticed that I could get away with cutting the entire dress from the cotton satin, so I did.
---
EN: The most eye-catching feature of this dress is the front draping, managed with a fabric tab/loop. Allison C. had just finished her version of this dress when I was about to start sewing mine and posted great photos of this detail on the making (click here). I LOVE her version with a longer skirt, and the fabric she used is absolutely to die for!
---
EN: Here it is mine on the wrong side (the lining is cotton voile); notice that I also lined the skirt of the dress; I hemmed it shorter and stitched it to the empire waist seam; I also stitched it by machine to the zipper tape. The bodice lining was then attached by hand to the empire waist seam (the allowances were first pressed upwards to the bodice) and also hand-stitched to the upper section of the invisible zipper, ending at the neckline.
---
EN: The neckline tab/loop was finished by hand with tiny back-stitches:
---
EN: I love the shoulder line of this dress with the short dolman sleeve:
---
EN: The back neckline of the dress is also very elegant and adds to its retro vibe, in my opinion:
---
EN: Here you can see the lined wrong side along the opened invisible zipper:
---
CONCLUSION: A very feminine dress, with flattering and beautiful style lines. I like it very much in printed fabric but I think this dress would also look great in a solid fabric (like the BurdaStyle's version with the different fabric textures, matte and shiny, for example). I still had the printed silk satin left so I decided to use it for making a matching cover-up, as you'll see next :).
---
 The Kimono - O Kimono
EN: This kimono is my first make from the London based brand Ralph Pink and I am very happy with the outcome. The Amayo Drape pattern is available as a multi-size pattern PDF download, printable in both A4 and A0 formats and includes illustrated instructions. It's perhaps one of the easiest Ralph Pink's patterns, rated "absolute beginner". According to the pattern description, it's a Kimono inspired design (ideal as a beach cover-up) with options to match the cuffs and have them split at the underarm. The collar/front edge band is wide and stands up on the back. It has a center back seam, no fasteners and a rolled hem.
---
EN: For my version I used celadon green crepe backed satin and the silk satin with the same print as the dress for the bands and cuffs. I cut size M and was surprised by the simplicity of the pattern, which consists of three pieces: main body (cut twice), cuffs (cut twice) and neckline/front band (cut twice), all rectangular based shapes. The only remark to the pattern (if I can call it that) is that I couldn't find the indication if it had seam allowances included anywhere... I ended up measuring it and came to realize it comes with 1cm (3/8") seam allowances already included in the pattern pieces.
---
EN: The cuffs and collar/band are interfaced (I used thin knit fusible interfacing) and made the split cuffs. The sewing instructions are quite easy and simple to follow and the quality of the finished item will depend solely on your technique to perform simple tasks, like applying fusible, stitching straight,  stay-stitching the angles  and pressing techniques.
---

EN: For seam finishing I opted for french seams and baby hem, but any other suitable/easier method will work too. My only explicit deviation ofrom the instructions was on the hem sewing order; the instructions tell to apply the collar band first and then hem the kimono; I think it's easier to hem it first (using only 3/8" for hemming) and then apply the band.
---
CONCLUSION: I love the Amayo Drape and how it looks with the dress! I plan on wearing it together with the dress on special occasions only (a dinner out, birthday partys, etc.) but both garments work very well on their own so there will be plenty of opportunities for wearing them! Thank you all for reading!
---
