Casaco Orwell #9: Costuras avivadas - Orwell Coat #9: Piped seams

Nas fotos do casaco Orwell podem ver que este casaco tem umas costuras bastante originais, que além de pespontadas a branco têm um vivo (também branco) metido na própria costura. Esta técnica usa-se muito em projectos de decoração do lar e vem ilustrada em vários livros de costura, incluindo o da Burda; deixo-vos aqui uma foto das páginas do livro da Burda, onde podem ver os passos principais para a execução do vivo:
The seams on the Orwell coat are quite original; if you look carefully in the picture, you'll notice that all the seams are topstitched by hand and that there is also white piping on some seams. The piping technique is commonly used on home decoration projects and you can look it up in almost every sewing book. The next picture shows the illustrations of Burda’s Portuguese edition sewing book addressing this technique:

E agora vou mostrar o meu teste num retalho de tecido, para verem como fiz e apreciarem o efeito final nas costuras do casaco Orwell.
As always, when a special technique is involved, I run some tests on scrap fabric first. I will try to explain the procedure and in the end you can preview the final result on the Orwell coat.

Para fazer o vivo utilizei fita de viés (do tipo que se compra nas retrosarias, que vem vincada de forma a fazer debruados) e cordão de algodão com cerca de 4mm de espessura. A primeira coisa que fiz foi passar a ferro a fita para lhe retirar os vincos de origem; depois dobrei-a sobre o cordão e fixei tudo com alfinetes, como podem ver na figura seguinte:
To make the piping I used white cotton bias tape, the kind you buy to make bindings, and white cotton cording (4mm). The first thing to do is to press the bias tape so I get flat open bias tape with no creases on it. Then I fold it, enclosing the cording inside and pin everything in place, just as shown in the picture:

Na máquina de costura, enfiei linha branca e regulei o ponto para o máximo de comprimento, de forma produzir um alinhavo feito à máquina; mudei o pé calcador para o pé especial de coser fechos, pois vou ter que coser mesmo rente ao cordão. Notem na figura que os alfinetes ficaram por baixo (neste caso dá mais jeito). Vou cosendo rente ao cordão envolvido pela fita, tendo o cuidado de ir retirando os alfinetes antes do pé calcador passar por cima deles:
I threaded my sewing machine with white thread; the stitch length should be set to its maximum, to make a nice machine basting stitch. I use the zipper foot to sew right next to the cording, removing pins before they get under the zipper foot (note that pins are in the wrong side; this way I’m able to sew closer to the cording).

Neste momento já tenho o vivo pronto, falta cose-lo ao tecido e efectuar a costura de união de dois tecidos.
At this point the piping is done and ready to sew in the garment seam.

Podem ver na próxima figura que coloquei a tira do vivo sobre a parte direita do tecido. Entretanto mudei a linha para cor preta e ajustei o ponto para 2.5. Deve-se coser o vivo ao tecido tão rente ao cordão quanto possível, retirando os alfinetes antes que o pé calcador lhes passe por cima.
I pin the piping on fabric's right side and sew close to the cording using black thread this time. The stitch length is set to 2.5. Again, don't forget to remove pins before they get under the zipper foot.

Depois viro a peça ao contrário e coloco por baixo a outra parte em tecido, direito contra direito; prendo tudo com alfinetes (da mesma forma mostrada anteriormente) e coso exactamente sobre a costura anterior (com linha preta).
Next I turn over garment fabric with sew-in piping and place another layer of fabric under it (right sides facing each other); both seam lines should overlap (now, if you trim SAs to exactly 1cm first, this is very easy to accomplish). After pinning everything together, I sew a second row of stitches exactly where the first row is located (using black thread).

Antes de fazer o pesponto branco, vou alinhavar com linha de seda fininha os valores de costura assentados para um dos lados e assentar a ferro com cuidado para não marcar o tecido no direito do trabalho.
Before I do the white topstitching, I fold SAs to one side and hand baste them using silk thread; I press it very gently using a press cloth.

Nesta última figura podem apreciar o resultado final, depois de pespontar com um ponto corrido fininho, usando a linha torçal branca.
In this last picture you can see the final result, after topstitching by hand with double thread (twist buttonhole thread).
