2006 #1 - Patrones nº249: Vestido Adolfo Domínguez - Adolfo Dominguez Dress

Do you remember when I told you about muslins and how important they are to achieve a good fit? I decided to show this as an example for those unacquainted with this sewing technique…

I made this dress a few months ago and not knowing the Patrones fit, I decided that making a test garment would be safer. My size should be about a 42 (Burda has different size numbers) and the magazine provided 40-44-48 gradings. I had to trace a 42 in between (this isn’t as hard as you may think).
The fit was surprisingly good and I didn’t need to do any adjustment, aside from easing the front armscye a bit so it stays closer to the body. This wasn’t as tight as the model (see next picture), but it was fine by me; over fitting is a common mistake and should be avoided when sewing fabrics with no giving like the one I used on this dress.

Instead of sewing a hidden front zipper (under the black corduroy vertical stripe), I sewed an invisible zipper to the back, ending close to the back neck; this way I avoid feeling like I’m hanging from my neck when I sit down! I also shortened the front vent a little bit. Podem ver alguns detalhes nas próximas fotos: You can watch some of the construction details here:

Quanto a mim, estou sempre a aprender coisas novas e a procurar novas técnicas. Boas costuras!

And now you are thinking that sewing is extremely difficult, only pros do it properly, etc. That’s not true. Sewing is easy; it has a long learning curve if you want to achieve excellent results, I give you that… But, by all means, it isn’t difficult or intended for pros only. I learned all by myself and I am no pro; sewing is simply my favourite hobby… I tell you one thing though: its hard work if you want to do it right, and that can only be achieved with lots of practicing! As far as I am concerned, I’m learning new things every day and I’m always seeking for new ways to improve my sewing. If I compare my work with the work of some of the ladies whose blogs are listed here, I feel that I’m still an apprentice… Good sewing everybody!

The dress turned out gorgeous. I am in awe of that invisible zipper. Utter perfection. I need to focus on being more careful in my work. I tend to focus too much on productivity to the detriment of quality. I'm inspired to do better!
