Casaco Orwell #19: Aplicação das mangas – Orwell Coat #19: Inserting the sleeves

O tipo de manga deste casaco designa-se por manga aplicada (cosida à cava) e é cosida ao casaco depois das costuras laterais deste e das mangas terem sido cosidas e passadas a ferro. No molde existem umas marcações que indicam onde a cabeça da manga deve ser embebida (franzida, encolhida); estas marcações têm um círculo amarelo à volta na próxima figura. Entre estas marcações já tinha feito duas linhas de pesponto com pontos largos, com a linha da agulha solta, como se devem lembrar. Estes pespontos vão servir para franzir a cabeça das mangas (puxa-se as linhas e dá-se uns nozinhos nas pontas para manter o franzido). Um aspecto importante a ter em conta são os sinais de aplicação que devem coincidir na manga e no casaco. Na próxima figura podem ver a verde o sinal que indica o lado, a azul o sinal que indica a frente e a vermelho o sinal de aposição do ombro (atenção que estão a ver a cava esquerda e a manga direita!).
This kind of sleeve is called "set-in sleeve" and it is stitched to the coat after side seams and sleeve seams are stitched and pressed. There are a few notches on the sleeve pattern that indicate where the sleeve is to be eased (see yellow circles in the next picture); I've previously made two rows of long stitches between these two notches. Pulling the threads will cause the fabric to gather enough so the sleeve fits in the armhole. Another important thing is to match the other notches indicated by the colored arrows: green for the side seam notch, blue for the front notch and red for the shoulder notch. Note: in the picture there’s the left armhole and the right sleeve!

MUITO IMPORTANTE: Nas mangas de uma só peça a costura da manga coincide com a costura lateral; nas mangas de duas peças como esta, a costura de dentro da manga NUNCA coincide com a costura lateral (neste casaco não existe costura lateral mas está representada pela marca assinalada a verde).
VERY IMPORTANT: on one-piece set-in sleeves, sleeve seam matches the side seam; on two-piece set-in sleeves (like these ones), these seams should NEVER match (in this case there's no side seam but this spot is indicated by the side notch).

Primeiro fixo com alfinetes a manga à parte inferior da cava (até às marcações do franzido), fazendo coincidir as marcações da frente e da costura lateral:
First I pin the sleeve to the underarm seam, matching front and side notches (I stop at the easing notches); the dressform is a handy tool to do this procedure:
Em seguida tiro o casaco do manequim e, olhando para a cava do lado do avesso do casaco, prendo primeiro a marca da manga correspondente ao ombro; para franzir o tecido excedente da manga vou puxando os fios dos pespontos até que a manga encaixe perfeitamente na cava; prendo tudo com alfinetes e dou uns nós nas pontas dos fios para o franzido não se desmanchar:
Next I take the coat off the dressform and (looking at the armhole from the coat's wrong side) I pin the shoulder notch matching the shoulder seam; to ease the sleeve cap I pull the threads until the sleeve cape eases into the armhole size and I pin everything in place. I make small tailor knots on the threads so the gathering won't ease off.
Tiro todos os alfinetes e ponho a manga na luva de passar encaixada na tábua de mangas (lembram-se da foto no casaco Orwell #18?), tal como mostra a figura; o franzido é assim passado a ferro com bastante vapor para ficar liso e manter a forma arredondada.
Then I remove all the pins and I place the sleeve cap on the pressing glove previously attached to the sleeve board (remember the photo on Orwell Coat #18?), as is shown in the next picture; this way I can steam and ease the sleeve head, molding it to a rounded shape; I wait until it dries completely before removing it from the pressing glove.

Depois desta operação volto a prender a manga ao casaco com alfinetes mas desta vez vou alinhavar a manga para ficar mais segura. Virando o casaco para o direito deve ser possível ver-se o cair da manga e fazer alguma correcção se necessário.
I pin the sleeve back to the armhole, the same way I did before; this time I'll hand baste it in place before removing all the pins. Turning the coat over, I make sure that the sleeve hangs properly and that everything is in place.

Para coser a manga à máquina, a maior parte dos livros dizem para o fazer do lado da manga (como podem ver no desenho com o "x"). Eu prefiro fazê-lo do lado do casaco pois as costuras ficam mais perfeitas e direitas. É assim que fazem os alfaiates. Na parte debaixo da cava faço sempre outro pesponto em cima do primeiro para reforçar bem esta zona.
Most sewing books tell you to stitch the armhole with the sleeve side facing up (see drawing); I prefer doing this the Taylor's way, with the coat side facing up. I find this way more accurate and it works best for me. I also sew a second row of stitches reinforcing underarm seam.

Uma outra coisa que costumo fazer é passar um ponto de ziguezague na parte debaixo da cava; depois aparo os valores de costura até ao ponto de ziguezague e assim reduzo o volume de tecido nesta zona:
Another thing: I zigzag stitch the underarm seam close to the stitched line and then I trim the extra fabric; this way I reduce bulk on the underarm area.

Também coloco uma cabeça de manga feita com tecido de acolchoar fininho; prendo-a com alfinetes, como podem ver, e coso-a à máquina aos valores de costura da manga e do casaco.
I make my sleeve headers using thin quilting foam; I pin it into place (see next picture) and I stitch it to the coat/sleeve SAs.

Podem ver na próxima figura a manga já pregada; os alfinetes prendem o chumaço no sítio. Parece-me bem!

O chumaço é pregado com uns pontos feitos à mão, nos sítios indicados na figura:
I make little hand stitches to secure the shoulder pads in place. I stitch only at the spots indicated in next picture:

Depois de uma última verificação ao tamanho da manga, com o casaco já vestido (tenho que vos confessar que o casaco está o máximo!), prego o vivo na bainha da manga, viro os valores de costura para dentro e faço o pesponto branco na beirinha junto ao vivo; o punho em forro será cosido à mão à orla da manga pelo avesso, cobrindo os valores de costura.
After re-checking the sleeve length with the coat on me, I stitched the piping to the sleeve hem and turn SAs inside; all it takes now is the white topstitching! The lining cuff will be hand stitched to the hem later when the lining is finished.

Couture et Tricot… Et Crochet!

Quando criei este blog esqueci-me que também sei fazer croché. Embora já soubesse o básico, foi no verão do ano passado que comecei a fazer umas coisas a sério, motivada pelas tendências e pelas inúmeras revistas que saíram com roupas em croché lindíssimas. Só no verão do ano passado fiz cinco tops em croché para mim e um outro para oferecer a uma amiga; como tenho feito com os meus trabalhos de costura de 2006, também tenciono mostrá-los oportunamente.
When I came up with this name for my blog (Couture et Tricot) I forgot that I also make crocheted garments… I've known the crochet basics for quite a long time but I only started to improve my crocheting abilities during last summer. I was inspired by the many magazines with wonderful crocheted garments that came out last year. I remember making at least five tank tops for myself and another one as a gift for a friend of mine. I'll show some of them anytime soon.

Tenciono acabar o bolero Phildar em breve (hoje não vou estar em casa por isso não devo costurar; em vez disso levo o tricô comigo para ir adiantando o trabalho) e ainda estou à espera do catálogo da Anny Blatt com aquela blusa lindíssima. Se o catálogo não chegar entretanto, vou começar a fazer este vestido, até porque achei que 450g de algodão (a quantidade recomendada que encomendei) é muito pouco e tenho receio de ter de encomendar mais. Assim, se começar a fazer já, posso encomendar mais cedo antes que o fio possa esgotar. Tenham um óptimo fim-de-semana!
I plan to finish the Phildar Bolero soon (I'll be knitting and not sewing later today, so it will be almost finished by tomorrow) and I'm still waiting for the Anny Blatt catalogue to arrive (remember that gorgeous sweater?). If it doesn't arrive during the next week, this dress will move up on my "to do" list. The instructions call for only 450g of cotton yarn and I feel that it might not be enough; I want to be sure as soon as possible, so I can order some more yarn if needed, before it runs out of stock. Casaco Orwell #18: As mangas (2ª parte) - Orwell Coat #18: The sleeves (Part two)

Depois de terminar os cintos das mangas (para reverem como são feitos vejam o exemplo da execução das paletas dos bolsos: Casaco Orwell #10), o passo seguinte é pregar as presilhas nos punhos, na posição anteriormente marcada (Casaco Orwell #17). Podem ver na figura seguinte como fixei as presilhas com alfinetes para depois as coser:
After making the sleeve belts (if you want to recall this procedure, click on Orwell Coat #10, where I show how to make the pocket flaps; to make the belts the procedure is very similar), next step will be stitching the loop belts in place (see Orwell Coat #17). In the next picture you can see the loop belts pinned in place (upper edge):

Depois de cosidas em cima, temos de determinar a largura exacta das presilhas para as cosermos em baixo; vejam como marquei a linha de colocação a giz:
After stitching the upper edge, I determined the exact loop width and marked it with my chalk pencil:

E depois como cosi também esta costura (é preciso virar a presilha para chegar lá com o pé calcador, penso que conseguem ver como através da figura):
To stitch the bottom edge you must turn the loop aside (I hope the picture explains better than me):

Finalmente apara-se o excesso de tecido que sobra por baixo da presilha e dá-se uns pontos à mão para rematar melhor a costura:

Para depois franzir a cabeça da manga, vou fazer duas linhas de pesponto, uma de casa lado da linha de costura e entre as marcas de franzir (o molde tem umas marcas que passei para o tecido com alinhavos que indicam onde deve começar e acabar o franzido nas cabeças das mangas). O ponto deve ser ajustado para o máximo comprimento e a linha da agulha deve ser solta (o botão de tensão da linha deve estar na regulação mínima). Cose-se estes pespontos pelo lado direito da manga. Se o tecido fosse frágil e sujeito a ficar marcado, estas duas linhas de pesponto deveriam ficar do lado dos valores de costura e não uma de cada lado.
To later ease the sleeve cap, I made two parallel rows of stitching between the easing notches, one on each side of the seam line (that's because this fabric allows it; if dealing with fragile fabrics, both these stitching lines should be placed on the SAs side). The stitch length should be set to its maximum and the needle thread should be loose; the sleeve's right side should be facing up:

Como qualquer costura, primeiro passa-se ao longo da costura para que a linha se funda com o tecido:
As for any seam, I first press along the seam to meld the stitches into the fabric:

Para passar a ferro as mangas e para depois fazer o franzido vou utilizar um rolo de costura (uma espécie de chouriço recheado com serrim e que tem duas faces, uma de lã e outra de algodão), uma tábua de mangas e uma luva de passar:
These are the pressing tools I'll be using to press the sleeves and to ease the sleeve cap: a pressing roll, a sleeve board and a pressing glove:

Aqui podem ver como se utiliza o rolo para abrir a costura interna das mangas a ferro (primeiro aparei os valores de costura para 1cm):

E finalmente têm o punho já com o cinto aplicado; falta apenas colocar o vivo na bainha mas isso só vou fazer depois de pregar as mangas. Quero ter a certeza que terão o tamanho que pretendo. Na próxima vez vou mostrar como se faz o franzido na cabeça das mangas e como estas se cosem às cavas do casaco. Fiquem bem!

Moda Portuguesa: Primavera/Verão 2007 – Portuguese Fashion: Spring/Summer 2007

Bem sei que neste momento decorrem os principais desfiles de moda para o Outono Inverno de 2007… Também é um facto que prefiro costurar roupa de Inverno, por normalmente ser mais elaborada. Mas também é um facto que neste momento tenho o guarda-fatos cheio de roupa de Inverno e que preciso mesmo é de costurar roupa de meia estação ou para a Primavera/Verão… Assim sendo andei a fazer uma pesquisa pelos desfiles de Primavera-Verão à procura de inspiração e de indicação para as novas tendências… Como os desfiles dos principais criadores já não devem ser novidade para qualquer viciada em moda que se preze (embora estejam carregados de novas ideias e inspirações), resolvi fazer um pequeno apanhado do que se fez em termos de design de moda em Portugal para esta próxima estação. Espero que gostem!

I'm aware that at this moment the spotlights are pointed to the Fall 2007 fashion shows; it's also a fact that I prefer sewing Winter garments (it's a matter of personal preference, Fall/Winter clothes appeal more to me). In spite of all that, my wardrobe is filled with Fall/Winter clothes (I mean full) and what I need now is to start making some Spring/Summer garments… So I went back the Spring/Summer fashion shows, in search of guidance and inspiration. It occurred to me that these Collections are past news to any truly fashionista so I thought maybe it would be fun to show a small sample of what was done here in Portugal in Fashion Design and apparel for the Spring/Summer 2007 season. Casaco Orwell #17: As mangas (1ª Parte) – Orwell Coat #17: The sleeves (Part one)

Bom, ontem não tive muito tempo para costurar mas consegui compilar a informação relativa ao meu progresso nas mangas até esta altura.
Well, yesterday I had no chance to sew but I manage to compile all the information about my progress on the sleeves so far.

A primeira coisa que fiz foi coser e pespontar a costura de trás das mangas:
First thing I did was stitching and topstitching the sleeve back seam:

Depois desta costura pronta resolvi fazer um teste; alinhavei o punho à manga, cosi a costura de dentro e alinhavei a manga ao casaco para testar o seu comprimento; vale sempre a pena fazer estes pequenos testes, que dão algum trabalho mas compensam largamente pois evitam depois ter de desmanchar o que está feito em caso de erro. Verifiquei com esta prova que a manga estava comprida demais e resolvi tirar 2,5cm ao comprimento da manga (não ao comprimento do punho). Mesmo assim as mangas ficam compridas, mas penso que é uma característica deste casaco (observem a foto do casaco original). Vejam na próxima imagem o excesso marcado e o punho, já com o vivo cosido no lado direito (ainda falta o vivo da orla da manga mas esse é a última coisa a coser):
After this I decided to run a test before proceeding any further; I hand basted all the pieces together and I pinned the sleeve into the armhole opening, just to test if the sleeve length was right. It wasn't; I tried the coat on and I felt like Dunga. Lucky me for running this test first! I took one inch from the sleeve length (not the cuff length); see next picture where the piping is already stitched to the cuff's upper edge (the piping on the sleeve hem will be the last thing to sew). The long sleeves are a design feature (see original model) but some restrictions still apply…
Depois de coser e pespontar os punhos, o próximo passo é colocar as presilhas que suportam os cintos das mangas. Primeiro marco com giz a posição onde vou coser as presilhas; como decidi que vou fazer apenas duas presilhas por manga, basta-me fazer as marcações para que as presilhas fiquem a igual distância quando a manga estiver fechada:
After stitching and topstitching the cuffs, the next step will be to determine where the loop belts will be placed. In the next picture you can see how I used a chalk pencil and some measuring tools to do this. I decided that two belt loops are enough for each sleeve and I placed the chalk markings so that they were half way from each other when the sleeve is ready:

Here are the fabric rectangles that were used for making the loop belts:

Dobro em dois cada rectângulo e coso a 0.8mm da orla:
I turned each one in half and I stitched them 0.8mm away from the edge:

Para abrir esta costura a ferro utilizo um pauzinho chinês. Desde que seja redondo, qualquer pauzinho ou o cabo de uma colher de pau serve para este efeito:
I used a chopstick to press the SAs open (any rounded wood stick will do):

Para virar as presilhas para o lado direito usei uma agulha de croché, como podem ver a seguir:
Turning the loop belts is easy if you use a crochet hook like is shown in the picture:

E pronto, aqui têm a presilha pronta a ser cosida!

Antes de coser as presilhas vou fazer os cintos (o que demora algum tempo por causa de todo o trabalho à mão envolvido). Só assim tenho a certeza que as presilhas ficarão depois com o tamanho certo.
Before proceeding with the sleeve I'll make the sleeve belts (lots and lots of hand work ahead…), this way I can be sure about the belt loops correct size.
