In exchange I received a pdf copy of the book for reviewing and after reading it I’d like to share my thoughts about this wonderful book with you guys.

EN: Before getting into the book content, let me introduce you to Barbara Emodi: Barbara, like me and many of you, is a maker who has been sewing for most of her life. She runs a sewing blog “Sewing on the Edge with Barbara Emodi” (link) and she has been teaching and writing about sewing for many years. She is a frequent contributor and contributing editor for Threads Magazine and for the Australian magazine Dressmaking with Stitches. She has recently released her first book: ” SEW… The Garment-Making book of Knowledge”, now available on C&T Publishing (link) and Amazon (link).

EN: I will share my thoughts about this book and tell you what you’ll find in it: as I was reading, my perception was that the author clearly loves everything about sewing; the book, in my opinion, is an excellent read, almost conversational. I completely relate to Barbara's point of view and feel the same way about the resurgence of interest about sewing among young people and the new generation of bloggers sharing their makes on the Internet. The book is not intended to be a sewing encyclopedia or text book; it is rather a book about sewing from the perspective of a maker who learned her first steps from her mother, has been sewing for many years and is willing to pass her knowledge to the next generation. Her well thought out book is built to guide the reader through the first obstacles when starting to sew, always bringing out the joy of making it happen. It will show the reader where to start, sharing many tricks of the trade along the path; it will motivate the pursuit of this art and it will inspire the reader's creativity every step of the way.
---

EN: The book is divided into nine chapters, each one addressing an essential aspect of sewing; it starts with the motivational aspects, as it steers the reader through the first dilemmas (we’ve all been there, right? Assessing our capabilities and deciding where to start, what to sew). Chapter three is about patterns and I consider it of great importance, specially to anyone new to sewing wanting to try commercial sewing patterns.
---
EN: Chapter four and five both concern a very important aspect of sewing: the  fit. I like the fact that fitting is addressed in the early chapters of the book, as it is often neglected by the beginners. As a self-taught sewist I have to confess that I didn’t pay much attention or was even aware of the fit of my sewn garments until later in my learning path. I think the information and tips shared by Barbara are very well explained and invaluable; I wish I had this book when I started to make my own clothes.
---
EN: Chapter six is about choosing and cutting fabric, not forgetting the secondary fabrics: the interfacings and linings. A bad choice of fabric can ruin a garment before it is even sewn. It is also very important to know about pre-treating your fabric before cutting, how to properly layout and cut the fabric and how to deal with interfacings and linings. These are the foundations of the sewing process and should not be overlooked. Again Barbara’s tips and mini-lessons will guide the reader in a practical and uncomplicated manner. The next chapter in the book is about the gear used in sewing, all the tools and notions that are essential to the process. Barbara’s tips and suggestions are right on point, accompanied with mini-lessons that will provide additional hands-on context.
---
EN: The last chapters wrap it all up with the most important technical aspects that should never be ignored and one more motivational push forward. Chapter eight is packed with useful techniques and chapter nine is titled Sewing for Joy. I totally subscribe to the message the author is passing in this last chapter and throughout the entire book: whatever you make, be sure to enjoy the process and learn along the way. You should sew what makes you feel happy.
---

EN: One final word about the garments showcased in this book: they are simple enough to be tackled by a beginner yet Barbara made sure each garment adds a twist and introduces something new to learn. They are meant to inspire and nurture the love for making clothes, building a connection with the reader from the beginning to the end of the book.
---
CONCLUSION: A truly wonderful and inspiring book! I would definitely gift this book to a daughter of mine or a sewing student. When I finished reading it, my last thoughts were: this book is a celebration of the love for sewing; it is definitely a legacy to the new generation of makers! Well done Barbara, this is the book I would like to have written myself!

Thank you for your comprehensive comments. As a "late starter"to sewing, it is easy to forget the joy that the process (and outcomes!) should bring, while dealing with the various uncertainties and frustrations that occur when tackling a garment. Barbara's emphasis on the pleasure and fun of sewing sounds such a positive!

Ana Braga, from a very small town named Vidigueira, in the Alentejo region in the South of Portugal - I would like to get this book because, as a beginner self-taught seamstress, I have many doubts about clothes making (making me hesitate a lot in this department) and it seems, according to this review, that the book would be perfect to give me the confidence to make more clothes for me and my family

Sewing brings me joy because I am making something with my hands. Everything I make is unique to me. Even if I've copied something I made mine! I would love this book because I am always looking for ways to improve my skills!
