Top de atar Burda Maio2008 mod120 – Tie-on Top BWOF May2008 mod120

Português
English (uncheck the other box and check this one)

You can see the original model here (Burdamode website).

Description: A clever top with oversized dropped shoulders, V-neckline and wide waistband with ties that wrap around the waist. The contrast bands on the neckline are just like exterior facings. The original is made of metallic jersey

Materials: print b&w jersey with “Pied de Poule” pattern and thin black jersey for the contrasts.

This was the ideal project for 1 - use small piece of fabric that was aging in my stash for some time and 2 – provide some training for the next project, the BWOF May2008 mod121 (dress), which uses the same pattern for the bodice.

Though this is not a difficult to make top, there is some work involved into getting it right. I followed the instructions except for some details: I interfaced the front neck bands and not only the back neckband as instructed (used thin knit fusible interfacing) and also thread traced them for accuracy; I also basted/pressed the outer edge SAs to the inside BEFORE applying the neckband to the garment (the instructions tell you to turn the SAs to the inside after the neckband is sewn in place to the neckline edge):

I topstitched both edges of the band:

In this picture you can see the band on the wrong side; it really looks like a facing, but applied on the right side!

The sleeve cuffs are a little different (not facings but like regular cuffs), so they look like this on the wrong side:

This is the center front bottom, and the ties:

And on the top’s right side, the opening through which the left tie passes to the outside (this picture has been brightened):

Conclusion: A very trendy top, that goes well with the black&white set of my planned wardrobe. It’s not a difficult project but some care is needed, mainly reading the instructions very carefully. It’s a little short (I believe this is intended, and also for the dress which has a high waistline too) but if you care to make it longer all there is to it is adding the extra length at the bottom edge of the front and back patterns.

On my next blog entry I will show some of the new fabrics I have purchased, I will talk about one of my future projects that will take a little more time and effort (I’m not starting it now, but I’m planning ahead) and I will thank some friends for some of the goodies I’ve been receiving in the mail!

Paco

Another success, dear Tany!
Your version looks so much better than the Burda's model. Theirs did nothing for me. Yours is so classy and much more flattering.

I am so glad to see you sew. You are in my thoughts... Sending big hugs and all my love!

You are just going to town on the jersey tops. Isn't it fun to just sit down and bang out some fast tops? They all look great. Have fun wearing them.

Tany - looks good on you, will you use the same fabric for the dress or a lighter one? I'am asking this beacuse I tried to make the same bodice for a dress ad it came out desastrous beacuse of the heavy weight fabric. As to the print, I'm not really fun of black and white pied de poule print except for larger ones on coats, or scottish like " prince de galle". Good look with the dress.

Obrigada a todas!
Thank you all!

Paco: Gracias!

Stacy: I'm glad to see you're back!

Isabelle: Thank you! You are in my thoughts too, dear friend!

Celina: Obrigada! :)))

Cafe Couture: Hi! I'm not using this fabric for the dress (this was just a small remnant I had in my stash); I'm using a white/yellow/black print knit
(Gucci inspired) and black contrasts for the dress. You can see a picture of the fabric if you click on the link to my spring/summer project list (at the sidebar). At this point the dress is almost done (with a few changes because all I had was 2m of fabric, instead of the 3,5m required), and it is turning out quite well! I'm sorry you had a previous bad experience with this pattern...
