EN: I always look for ways of using all my fabric, reducing waste and, if possible, recycling some notions/materials from old garments that I don't use anymore. The fabric yardage left from the previous "Parfait Dandy" elements was enough for making the newsboy cap but using the right pattern (one that could combine the two fabrics and use long/narrow scraps) I knew I could also squeeze in an extra garment.

---

EN: I found the right pattern for making a skirt from the long narrow scraps: it's model 129 from the 2016/08 issue of Burdastyle magazine. The skirt is pencil-shaped having long vertical panels and the original also combines two coordinating fabrics. It features a wide waistband with a single front belt carrier and a belt, a center back invisible zipper and a round shaped help with a back slit for walking ease. There are no pockets and the skirt is unlined. I cut size 40 as usual, without modifications. I also took note that my fabrics are soft with a nice touch in contact with the skin, and have a little stretch so I assumed the unlined skirt would work for spring without wearing pantyhose (if wearing pantyhose, the absence of the lining would make the skirt stick to my legs and I wouldn't bear it).

---

EN: My alterations were mainly changing the fabric cutting layout, so I could use the long scraps that I had left. I used the hound's-tooth fabric on the side-front and center back panels; I also used it to cut the outer waistband and the belt. All other pieces were cut from the prince-of-wales plaid.

---

EN: Below there's the round hemline detail. I opted for a top-stitched hem, and the hem-allowances had to be cut slightly angled on the bottom corners to allow shaping along the inward curve without any fabric missing. The edges of the hem allowances were also eased on the round while pressing the hems in place, before basting and top-stitching. The hem width is a little over 1" and another valid option would have been to cut shaped hem facings, yet I think I did alright with the angled hem allowances and the hem allowance easing on the curves (also, there wasn't enough fabric for cutting the hem facings anyway) .

---

EN: Here's the skirt seem from the back; the invisible zipper was recycled from an old dress; the overall state of the dress was beyond any hope of being worn again by me or someone else, yet the zipper remained fully operational so I salvaged it:

---

EN: The skirt has a simple back slit for walking ease (I forgot to take photos showing this detail, but I mitered the corners of the hem):

---

https://tanysewsandknits.blogspot.com
EN: The belt is plain and simple but it does the job: I used two rectangular metal "rings" instead of a sliding buckle (again, using what I had available instead of buying):

---

https://tanysewsandknits.blogspot.com
EN: And lastly here's the newsboy cap, where again I used both fabrics instead of just the prince-of-wales plaid; I also used a leather covered button on top (it was a spare button from a purchased garment). The visor was interfaced but additionally I added an oaktag piece with the shape of the visor inside for extra structure.

---

EN: The pattern is from the 2006/09 Burdastyle, model 129B (single-size).

---

PT: O molde é da revista Burdastyle 09/2006, modelo 129B (tamanho-único).

EN: The cap is lined and I added a cotton sweat-band inside to I could better adjust the hat to my head size. It also makes it more comfortable.

---

I usually don't wear pencil skirts, but this post makes me want to sew one. Combined with a white blouse makes a very classic look, but the style lines on the skirt and the fabric matching makes it tres tres chic ;). This particular issue of Burda has many great patterns anyway.

Dear Tany I am back visiting your site as a reference to some office clothes after almost two years in track suits in home office.
