Le 801 LOUISE: construction notes part 2 (inner body shell and sleeves construction)

EN Summary: Pages 8 through 15 of the sewing instructions demonstrate how to construct the inner shell of the jacket's body (facings plus lining) and attach it to the outer shell. Keep reading the full article (disable ad-blocker and reload if blog content doesn't display).

EN: Constructing the separate inner body shell is quite straight forward; next photo shows the facings (front edge and upper-collar joined at center back seam, then stitched to the back neckline facing):
---
EN: The lining has separate pattern pieces (front left back and right back) and thorough instructions/illustrations are provided to sew the vent on the lining. Next photos show the finished result on the back vent of the lining; first on the right side where the seam ripper is pointing to the end of the slanted upper stitching (so a vertical seam allowance is left to stitch the lining to the fabric vent):
---
EN: Here's the wrong side of the lining vent; each of the seam allowances is to be stitched to the outer shell vent by machine, achieving a very professional looking finish. If you're not comfortable with this technique, you can opt for slip-stitching the lining down by hand (it's perfectly alright; I've used the hand-sewn technique for many years before learning to master the industrial way to finish a lined vent).
---
EN: The inner body shell is completed when facings are sewn to the lining, leaving the bottom portion of the joining seam un-stitched for about 4 inches; the inner shell is to be attached to the outer shell, in this case before the sleeves are sewn. There's yet another industrial technique in the instructions: how to finish the front hem/facing/lining intersection corner entirely by machine. The technique is basically the same as Fashion Incubator's Nameless tutorial except it allows for the lining horizontal ease pleat. The pattern pieces are cut specifically for this technique and everything comes together beautifully. Start by sewing the facing/upper-collar to the front edges/under-collar, and under-stitch the entire seam from start to end. When sewing the facing to the front along the hem (3/8" SAs here), right sides facing each other, be sure to fold the under-stitched edge to the facing side as shown bellow:
---
EN: It is also important to reinforce (stay-stitch) the pivot corner when the hem allowance starts; the corner should also be slashed to the angle so the hem allowance can fold upwards and be stitched along the unfinished lining/facing seam:
---
EN: When stitching the bottom front to the facing, stop exactly at the reinforced angle and back-stitch:
---
EN: Next sew the lining bottom edge to the hem allowance:
---
EN: According to industrial sewing best practices, the stronger/more stable layer should be on top while stitching so here I'm stitching with the interfaced hem allowance on top and the lining underneath:
---
EN: When the hem is turned upwards (right sides facing, meaning we are working from the wrong side), notice that a lining pleat is formed along the vertical seam (the bottom section of the lining/facing seam that was left open is going to be stitched now, also catching the hem allowance towards the slashed angle).
---
EN: The finished corner from the wrong side:
---
EN: The last thing to do before turning the jacket to the right side is grading all seam allowances, press them open where possible and trimming the corner on the front facing like shown in the next photo to reduce bulk. The ling shouldn't be stitched to the hem all around, there should be an opening either on the hem or on the lining side seams so it is possible to reach inside; there are several tasks to perform this way: tacking the facings to the jacket by hand, tacking all the hem allowances and sewing the sleeves into the armholes.
---
EN: The sleeves are sewn and lined separately; the vent is sewn exactly as the back vent by first sewing the mitered corner on the overlap; then the lining sleeves are sewn and stitched to the sleeve hems and vent allowances, exactly as it was performed to clean finish the back vent of the jacket.
---
EN: Here's the sleeve vent finish from the wrong side and from the right side:
---

EN: It is possible to stitch the fabric sleeve to the jacket and the lining sleeve to the lining by reaching inside the jacket through the un-stitched opening. Before closing the opening I also like to tack the lining to the jacket under the armholes, to make sure it doesn't shift. And this is all for today, hope you guys find this information useful.
---
