EN: Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and I also take this chance to wish you all the best for the New Year. Today I will share some practical notes on the making of these pockets because I feel that in spite of the instructions with diagrams, some of you may struggle to get the pockets done right and with precision. There are a few things to consider with this pattern and the pockets in particular:

1- All seam allowances are included in the pattern and are 1 cm (3/8") unless otherwise stated.
2- The coat is unstructured and loose-fitting and if you're using the recommended fabrics, the front panels are not fully interfaced (only the hem allowances and the pocket placement area are interfaced, besides stabilizing  the front/lapels edges, neckline and shoulders with straight-grain fusible tape (or straight grain cut strips of fusible interfacing).
3- The pattern markings for the pocket placement on the fronts are slanted parallelograms (not rectangles with four 90º angles!), indicating the finished welt position. I used tailor tacks to mark each corner of the parallelogram, trimmed the thread ends to 1/4" on the wrong side and then fused the area (on the wrong side), making sure the interfacing extends the parallelogram area by 1/2" all around, give or take. On the right side I chalk marked the cutting line 3/8" away and parallel to the longer side of the parallelogram which is near to the center front (as seen in the next photo):

4 - There are four pattern pieces for the pockets, all including 3/8" seam allowances:

  • the welt (once folded lengthwise with the small edges stitched together, then turned to the right side, it becomes the exact shape of the parallelogram plus seam allowance on the edge to be stitched down to the front); the wrong side of the public side should be interfaced.
  • there are two different lining pocket bags: one faces the body of the wearer when finished and should be stitched to the pocket bag facing (I'm calling it the inner pocket bag)
  • the outer lining pocket bag, which faces the garment when the pockets are finished.
  • the pocket bag facing (also to be interfaced); this piece should be stitched to the inner lining pocket bag before constructing the pocket.
The way to determine which pocket bag is which is simple: only one of these two pieces matches the pocket facing along the joining seam. Another detail to consider with this coat is that it's only partially lined so the pockets should look well on the wrong side too. This is why I'm using bias tape binding to edge finish the seam that joins the pocket bag facing with the inner lining pocket bag (seen in next photo):
---

EN: To be able to sew the pocket correctly and precisely without swapping left and right pocket pieces, you must place them as if they were stitched, on top of the front of the coat; the pocket facing and inner bag are placed with right sides up; the outer pocket bag is placed on top with right side facing down and the welt is placed with public side facing up (in this position it should match the shape of the parallelogram which corners are tailor-tacked; there's a specific welt for left and right side of the front!). I like to machine-baste the outer lining pocket bag to the welt before constructing the pocket (at a scant less than 3/8"): to achieve this, wrong side of the welt faces right side of the outer lining pocket bag when stitching. All pieces are joined and placed as they will be when the pocket is finished below:
---
EN: First I sew the pocket bag with the welt machine-basted along the longer edge of the parallelogram that faces the center front (welt facing down); the seam edges match the chalk-marked cutting line at 3/8" of the stitching line and the ends of the welt (which are very clear thanks to the machine-basting ending right at the welt edges) match the tailor-tacked corners exactly; just stitch a scant to the left of the machine basting to achieve an exact 3/8" seam:
---

EN: Next the pocket bag with attached pocket facing is places along the cutting line, right side facing down; it should be stitched at 3/8" from the cutting line, in a row parallel to the previous stitching; just mind a small detail: on the bottom of the pocket the seam should end 1/4" away from the start of the first row of stitching (I'm pointing at it with the seam ripper); this ensures the pocket opening will be hidden by the welt and not peeking out under it! Due to the shape of the welt, there's no need to do this on the top of the pocket opening.
---
EN: The procedure that follows should be well-known by now: slashing the pocket opening from the wrong side, with the ends shaped as little triangles (cutting to but not through the corners):
---
EN: Then pulling the pocket bags to the wrong side through the cut, leaving the welt on the right side:
---
EN: When the welt is placed towards the side of the front, in its final position, it should match the corners of the parallelogram exactly:
---
EN: There's still work to do on the wrong side: first top-stitching across the little triangles of the extremities on top of inner pocket facing thickness:
---
EN: Closing pocket bags together along their round edges:
---
EN: And making it pretty with bias binding along all edges:
---
EN: Last but not least, the short edges of the welt should be tacked down well secured, either by machine or by hand; Here's how my pockets look from the wrong side:
---
EN: The pocket works perfectly from the right side; in the photo it's still with the tailor tacks which can be pulled out easily thanks to being previously trimmed down to 1/4" on the wrong side before fusing the pocket area:
---
EN: I'll share more details of this amazing coat soon! Stay tuned!

PT: Em breve vou partilhar mais detalhes deste casaco tão especial! Fiquem atentos!

Thank you for the great tutorial. What was your reasoning for not applying interfacing to the fronts of the coat?

Tany said...

Thank you, everybody!
Lisette, the reason is the nature of the design, which is oversized and unstructured. It's mentioned in the instructions that, unless the fabric is very thin, interfacing is only required on hems, pocket areas, collars and facings. IMO it turned out quite well. It all depends on the fabric and interfacing though. If I was using a loosely woven fabric I would have had to use some sort of supple interfacing on the entire coat...

Thanks Tany! That is what I thought but I wanted your expert reasoning :) The coat I'm making is dropped shoulder and oversized and I'm thinking on doing the same since the fabric has a little bit of drape that I do not want to lose by interfacing but I will use it in the areas you mentioned.
Really love your finished coat and I look forward to seeing it on you. Hugs.
