EN: I have been eyeing the vests from fashion YouTuber Elena Galant on her new online shop The Other Colors and decided to try making a long vest for myself. I searched in my BurdaStyle magazine collection and found this dress pattern for tall sizes in the May 2012 issue (model 123):

EN: I was looking for a pattern with large patch pockets, a V-neck and cross-over front and this dress looked like a suitable starting base. I cut size 80 (the equivalent to size 40 for tall sizes) and did the following alterations (since I have a long torso and the vest is loose-fitted, I didn't bother to adjust the vertical measurements from tall to average height):
1 - Elongated the pattern 8";
2 - Eliminated the princess seams, joining center pieces with side pieces; then rotated the resulting front dart from the shoulder to 1" above the waist, to turn it into a french dart; did the same on the back panels, this time rotating the shoulder dart to the back neckline;
3 - Lowered the armholes by 3/4"
4 - The back vents on princess seams were eliminated; instead I cut the back with a center back seam and a single long vent;
5 - Eliminated the armhole facings;
6 - Drafted the lining pattern excluding the width of the front and back facings.
7 -Added 5/8" seam allowances to shoulder and side seams, 3/8" seam allowances to any other seams and 1 5/8" to hem allowances on self-fabric; lining fabric was cut with 3/8" hem allowances.
8 - Added a belt pattern (finished width of the belt: 2 3/4").

3 - Baixei as cavas 2cm;
4 - Eliminei as rachas das costuras francesas, criando uma costura no meio das costas e desenhando aí uma racha única comprida;
5 - Eliminei as vistas das cavas;
7 - Acrescentei margens de costura: 1,5cm para costuras laterais e dos ombros, 1cm nas restantes costuras; deixei 4cm de bainha no colete, 1,5cm de bainha no forro;

EN: For making the faux fur patch pockets I separated the all-in-one facing from the patch pocket, added seam allowances and cut it from self-fabric; for the lining I cut away the facing width and added seam allowances. I started by stitching facing to lining leaving a small unstitched section to be able to turn the pockets to the right side. Then I stitched the lining/facing unit to the faux fur pocket, right sides facing, all around (don't forget to clip corners and notch curved seams). After turning the pockets to the right side I slips-stitched the opening closed.
---
EN: The patch pockets were stitched by machine to the vest. While stitching I was careful to move the fur pile out of the way and stitching as close to pocket edge as possible. The long pile hides the machine-stitching. There's also a large flap stitched to the vest well above the pocket opening (it makes the pockets more proportional to the long vest and also mitigates the extra volume of the faux fur). I think the pockets turned out very well like this:

EN: Here's a closer look at the back neckline darts:

PT: Detalhe das pinças do decote atrás:
EN: The back vent was tailored while bagging the lining (the lining was stitched to the vent entirely by machine). The underlap seam was under-stitched and an ease pleat was created by adding extra length to the lining both at the hem and above the vent opening.
---
EN: For tailoring the vent I followed a method thoroughly explained in this Angela Kane video tutorial (YouTube link here), except I added the top-stitching at the top of the vent.
---

EN: I created the belt loops by making a chain with buttonhole twist thread and anchoring it on the inside with the help of two little buttons:

EN: I am really happy with the vest, which has started as a trial and became this beautiful wearable garment. I say a trial because the fabric is not of a noble quality (it's a poly-wool blend of sorts, ageing in my fabric stash for a few years) but I really loved the beige with a hint of dusty pink color against the grayish faux fur of the pockets and I'm really happy with the end result.
Thank you all for visiting, placing comments and supporting Couture et Tricot!
