EN: The most eye-catching piece in this triad is the tailored vest. The pattern is from Burda International 1/95 (one of my prized vintage magazines), known for its fashion forward and designer original patterns. While it is an ordinary tailored vest with princess seams on the front, the back tells another story and has these interesting cut-outs:

EN: If you observe the shape of the pattern pieces, it's not hard to understand how the pattern can be replicated from a regular well-fitted princess seam vest pattern. While the pattern may be easy to achieve, the construction of a fully lined vest like this is aimed at the experienced dressmaker/tailor. This Burda International issue came with the instructions booklet translated into Portuguese which made my life slightly easier; yet I had to think each step through to make sense of the instructions and ended up following a different approach because I wanted most of the vest edges to be under-stitched.
---
EN: I did manage to clean finish the back entirely, even without the intended tab on top (and I believe the method followed in the instructions will not deliver this; it counts on the tab to cover some of the construction details).
---

EN: For making the culottes I used the same pattern of the houndstooth pants seen in my previous entry, only made them shorter. Below there are photos of the vest with matching culottes on the dressform:
---

EN: When I bought the midnight-blue fabric, I also got the same fabric in burnt orange (I plan on making a nice short jacket out of it) and a coordinating striped fabric, a little softer and lighter. I decided to make a long shirt-dress that I could wear alone or match with the culottes and/or vest. The pattern of my choice was DP Studio's Le915a because I loved how well it fitted me in my previous version (click here). This time, due the striped nature of the fabric, I omitted the neck flounces and added patch pockets, keeping the cuffs narrower than on the original model.
---

EN: The shirt collar looks good buttoned all the way up but I will probably wear it with the top buttons unbuttoned all the time:
---
EN: Here's one cuff; the other one is absolutely symmetrical:
---
EN: I added the patch pockets because there was a small stain on the fabric and I didn't noticed it until the dress was almost finished. It was a tiny spot and probably nobody would notice it but me, yet... Most of you will understand, I'm sure ;).
---
EN: Here's the complete set on the dressform; I think the three pieces together look very unusual, yet modern and fresh. The proportions look very appealing to my eye. What do you think?
---
As proporções parecem-me bem equilibradas... Qual é a vossa opinião?

EN: Photos of me wearing the three garments together as a set are published on Tany et La Mode (here), hope you'll like them! Thank you all for visiting, and for the lovely comments in my last posts! Happy Sewing!

i'd be curious to know your method of finishing the vest edges so that most would be under-stitched!

Beautiful set. That vest is such an elegant design - simple yet unique. I think that's why indie designers disappoint me so much. Nothing unique mostly - just rehashes of stuff that is basic beginner patterns. I'd be interested to see the rest of that issue.

such an interesting outfit and you got a great fit on the vest - I would love to see it sewn in white for summer worn alone, it would look great.

Your vest is amazing...and I completely agree with you on the indie pattern designers. All they need to do is peruse some 1930's, 1940's and 1950's pattern and fashion books for inspiration on skirt seaming, sleeve variations, and pockets!
