EN: The patterns for the suit (kimono-sleeve jacket with side panels, notched collar and welt pockets made from prince-of-wales plaid and high-waist, wide-leg pants with side zipper made from coordinating houndstooth) are featured in one of my prized vintage Burda International magazines, the 1/1995 issue. This particular issue came in Spanish but the pattern instructions included were translated into Portuguese. Below you can see the specs of the patterns, sizes included and get the general idea of how the pattern pieces look like for each model:

PT: Os moldes deste fato (jaqueta de manga japonesa com painéis laterais, gola de alfaiate e bolsos de pestana feita com tecido xadrez principe de gales, e calça de cintura alta e perna larga com fecho na lateral feita de tecido pied-de-poule) fazem parte de uma das minhas preciosas revistas Burdas Internacionais, a edição 1/1995. Este número em particular vinha em espanhol, mas o caderno com os moldes e instruções já vinha traduzido para Português. Mais abaixo podem ver as especificações dos moldes e ter uma ideia do aspeto das peças dos mesmos:
EN: Unlike my other recent makes from these magazines, which were "remakes" (I had made the garments back in the nineties), this suit was a first to me, and I only thought of making it because I found the coordinating fabrics (wool blend), similar to those shown in the magazine. I actually have these fabrics for a couple of years now, planning to make this suit since I purchased them; the fabrics were stored in a ziploc bag together with the black lining, a zipper and four buttons needed for this suit (I ended up not using these buttons but similar ones).

PT: Enquanto outras peças que tenho feito destas revistas Burda Internacionais são "remakes" de roupa que já tinha confecionado nos anos 90, este fato é uma estreia, e só pensei em fazê-lo porque encontrei os tecidos semelhantes aos usados nos modelos originais (no meu caso são tecidos mistos de lã). Já tenho estes tecidos de lado há um ou dois anos, num saquinho, junto com o forro preto, o zíper e os quatro botões necessários (terminei por não usar estes botões, mas uns outros parecidos).
EN: The pants were an easy make when compared with the jacket; working with plaids meant that I had to take special care matching up the motifs and mirroring all the pattern pieces: a single layer cutting layout and thread tracing all seam lines was required to keep accuracy. Another difficulty was the bias cut seams along the sleeves, which needed wider seam allowances and fusible tape to stabilize the seam line and keep it from stretching out of shape. Next photo shows how I was thread tracing the center front piece (already fused) using the paper pattern without seam allowances (as provided in this magazine) as a template to thread trace all the seam lines, center front, roll-line, etc.

PT: As calças foram muitpo fáceis de confecionar quando comparadas com a jaqueta. Trabalhar com xadrez implica ter cuidado no alinhamento dos quadrados e espelhar as partes esquerdas com as direitas; como tal é preciso cortar com o tecido simples e não dobrado ao meio, uma peça de cada vez, cortando depois a sua imagem espelhada. Outras dificuldades são as costuras em viés das mangas, que necessitam de ter margens mais largas e reforço com fita termo-colante para não deformarem ao coser e ao usar. Na foto seguinte estou em pleno processo de marcar a peça central da frente com alinhavos, depois desta ser entretelada, usando o molde sem margens de costura (tal como vem nesta revista) como template para fazer as margações das margens, linha de dobra da lapela, centro frente, etc.
EN: This is how the center front piece looks after all the prep work; notice the sleeve hems are interfaced, the sleeve top seam is stabilized and the front edges, roll-line and neckline are all taped; the back was interfaced only on the hem allowances and top portion (back shield), including the shoulder area as seen on the front. Front side panels were fully interfaced and taped on the armholes while back side panels were interfaced and taped around the armhole area, and interfaced on the hem allowances. I used two kinds of interfacing: the weft insertion for fronts, back, side panels and bias-cut under-collar, and thin knit interfacing for the front/back facings and straight grain upper collar.

PT: Podem ver em seguida como ficou a parte central da frente depois de todo o trabalho de reforço e marcação. Notem que a margem de bainha da manga está entretelada e a costura do ombro/topo da manga foi estabilizada com fita termo-colante de malha fina. As orlas da frente, linha de dobra da lapela e decote levam fita beta termo-colante (é basicamente entretela tecida de colar a ferro cortada no correr do fio). As costas só foram entreteladas na parte superior e ombros e nas bainhas; os paineis laterais da frente levaram entretela na íntegra e fita termo-colante na costura da cava; os paineis laterais de trás só levaram entretela na zona da cava e bainhas, e fita na cava. Usei entretela mais estável nas frentes/costas/laterais e gola inferior cortada no viés, e entretela de malha fina nas vistas e gola superior.
EN: Here is the detail of the welt pockets on the jacket, right and wrong side; the welts were cut on the bias and interfaced with thin knit fusible. I made sure they were symmetrical on both sides of the jacket; to maintain accuracy, all pieces of the pockets should be cut very accurately, with precise seam allowances.

PT: Aqui têm os bolsos pestana da jaqueta, pelo direito e pelo avesso; as pestanas devem ser perfeitamente simétricas de ambos os lados da jaqueta, tendo sido cortadas em viés e reforçadas com entretela termo-colante de malha fina. Para garantir que os bolsos ficam perfeitos, neste caso é preciso cortar todas as peças do bolso com precisão e margens de costura certas.

I am always in awe of your meticulous work, especially in tailored jackets. I do not do the taping & perhaps should! Your plaid matching is perfect & the welts are amazing! Thank you for teaching me so much & offering so many tutorials to refer back to! Just a fabulous outfit!!!
