McCalls 7749 Sleeveless dress (or trench) in pink linen: Pockets, belt and belt loops

EN Summary: Today I want to highlight a few details that I did slightly different from the original (disable ad-blocker and reload the page if blog content doesn't appear). Keep reading the full article.

Continuem a ler o artigo completo.

EN: The pockets of this dress are quite beautiful; although they are simple in-seam pockets, they incorporate a decorative flap stitched along the opening on the front side which makes them look different.
---
EN: The seam is in fact inside the 5/8" seam allowance (it was stitched together with the front pocket bag at 1/4" seam allowance). The flap turns on itself to the front and the original has it tacked to the front from the wrong side, with an added decorative button. Notice that instead of cutting both pocket bags of lining (as suggested in the instructions), only the front pocket bag is made of lining; the back pocket bag is more visible when the pocket is open so I decided to use self-fabric instead. If I was using a heavier fabric than linen, another option would be applying a self-fabric facing to the lining pocket bag instead of cutting it all of self-fabric.
---
EN: The main differences from the original (besides the self-fabric back pocket bag) are: both layers of the pocket flap are interfaced with thin knit fusible and a bound buttonhole was sewn into the flap before attaching it; the button is stitched to the front of the dress (it has a little interfacing patch on the inside, for anchoring the button, which is not seen because the dress is fully lined). I did no tacking so the flaps may stick out a little more than the original.
---
EN: Here's the construction on the wrong side; notice that the pocket opening is reinforced with strips of fusible interfacing, so it doesn't stretch out of shape with wearing:
---
EN: I also made the belt a little differently; I interfaced it with medium-weight woven interfacing so the linen belt would hold its shape better; I wasn't able to find a matching pink buckle (or one specific for lining with self-fabric) so I improvised:
---
EN: I used the selvedge of the linen to wrap around a generic plastic buckle, after removing its prong; the buckle is also a little smaller than required so together with the added friction of the selvedge, it holds the belt in place without the need of the prong or eyelets:
---
EN: I also used the selvedge to embellish the belt loops, sewing two selvedges together, pressing the seam open and then stitching them in the ditch to the loops before attaching them to the dress:
---
EN: I am very happy with these "upgrades" to the original dress and hope they will inspire you guys to use your imagination and go beyond the pattern instructions. Next time I will show the finished garment details (psssst: photos of me wearing the dress are already published on Tany et La Mode - click here).
