EN: In the previous post you'll find my initial notes about the pattern, the making of the hood and also my fabric source. All I had left to do on the hood was giving it a final press and sewing the buttonholes; sewing machine automatic buttonholes turned out to be impossible; the buttonhole lever kept hitting the fabric due to the narrow sewing space and seam bulk on the hood ties so I opted for sewing the buttonholes in four steps, using the zigzag stitch (satin stitch), just changing the position of the needle and the width of the satin stitch as shown in this YouTube video (click here to watch it on YouTube in a different page):
---
EN: Once the hood was finished I moved on to sewing the cape, which is made from a single large pattern piece, finished all around with facings and the right-front hidden placket. Examining the pattern and the facing pieces I came across a couple of minor and easily solved pattern discrepancies: As you can see in the photo below, I placed the facing pattern pieces on top of the cape pattern to see if they matched correctly:
---
EN: The photo shows only the front section of the pattern because it was where I found the discrepancies, the facings on the back were spot on. The first problem was the front side corner where the front side facing meets the front hem facing. As you can see these two facings overlap completely when they should only overlap at the seam line, by the value of the seam allowance on each side (3/8" in the case of this pattern). Easily solved by cutting a section of the hem facing, since the side front facing will be placed on top after it has been bound with bias cut tape (you'll be able to see this finishing ahead):
---
EN: The other minor issue is related to the width of the front side facing; when referring to the pattern instructions and illustrations, the front side facing is represented as a wider piece, enough to meet the sleeve hem facing so both could be bound continuously as a single step; as you can see this doesn't happen; I solved this by bounding the side front facing and the sleeve facing separately and then sewing them together in a clean manner, as I will demonstrate ahead.
---
EN: The first step with the cape is sewing the inverted box pleat on the back and providing a neat finish on all raw edges with bias tape. The instructions will guide you through this process so I'm just showing you how it turned out in the end; I just might add that the pleat should be pressed/creased  prior to all the sewing and this is a delicate procedure because the creases are placed slightly on the bias and they may stretch if you are not careful. I found that hand-basting the creases in place and using a damp cloth while pressing (not sliding) with the iron (a valuable lesson learned from Paco Peralta) took care of all these issues form me, and the final result is as follows, inside and out:
---

EN: After the inverted box pleat is sewn on the center back, it's time for the patch pockets which in are sewn on the wrong side of the cape fronts. The next photo shows the pockets on the inside while I was hand-basting the facings so I could top-stitch them from the right side later. In the photo you can also notice the bound edge finishing and the way the vertical facings (in this case, the left front  edge facing) overlap the hem facings:
---
EN: I joined all facings and the hidden placket together and attached them to the cape as a single unit, right sides together; then I graded the seams, clipped/notched where necessary and under-stitched all the facings as far as I could reach towards the corners. After turning the facings/hidden placket to the inside I hand basted the facings to the cape close to the bound edges so I could use the thread lines as a guide fro top-stitching from the right side. For the inner layer of the hidden placket I used a thinner wool fabric, for bulk reduction. Here's the finished hidden placket:
---

EN: Here's the detail of the neck facing and the buttons around the neckline for attaching the hood:
---

EN: Remember the front side facing/sleeve facing intersection? Here's how I finished it, wrong side and right side (it involved some clipping underneath and good pressing):
---

EN: Here's the bottom corners when the sides are buttoned together:
---
EN: Another detail worth noting is the bottom hidden placket corner:
---
CONCLUSION: This project was very labor intensive but the outcome was really worth it. The cape drapes beautifully, is well finished both on the outside and the inside and it's really original and unique. It's not a project for everybody; it requires intermediate to advanced skill level to make it like the original and the finished cape will only appeal to those more daring in terms of style and originality. So far it is my favorite pattern from DP Studio and I highly recommend it if you're up to the task! Below there are a few more photos of the cape on the dressform (photos of me wearing it are published on Tany et La Mode - click here). Hope you guys find this article useful and leave me a not if you're making or made this cape. Happy sewing to all!

Beatiful Job! I am also planning on making this cape. Do you have any suggestions for choosing the right size?

Tany said...

Thanks, Jana! The pattern runs true to size. You may pick the size by conparing your bust measurement to the values in the pattern's size table. If you are petite however, you may have to shorten the sleeve's length and redraw the facings, so in that case it is better to sew a test garment first
