Dress with asymmetric shoulder pleats: Cutting, thread tracing and interfacing – Vestido com ombro pregueado assimétrico: o corte, marcaçóes e reforços

Summary: In this article I share some notes on how I drafted the skirt, the neck and armhole facings; I also talk about the preparation before starting to sew (thread tracing, interfacing).

---

The back skirt pattern / O molde das costas da saia:

EN: (I'll be referring to metric units, because that's what I use) As with the bodice pattern, the side seams are shifted back by 1cm (the front is wider than the back). To draft the skirt pattern there are basically four measurements needed: the waist (which should be the same measurement as the bodice of the dress, in this case); the hip (the actual hip measurement plus ease), the hip height (waist to the widest part of the hip) and the skirt length. The difference between the hip and the finished waist should be distributed by darts. On the back pattern we see that 1cm is taken at the center back, 3cm at the side and the remaining is the dart width. The back dart length is 12cm (counting from the upper edge of the rectangle frame) and it should be positioned so it matches exactly the bodice back dart. Also observe that the waist is lowered by 1,5cm at the center, tapering to nothing at the side (this curve should be trued with the darts closed). I’ve consulted several books and these values are tot consensual; with some methods, instead of lowering at the CB, the sides are raised. Since I followed Teresa Gilewska’s method for drafting the bodice, I am also using her directions to draft the basic skirt.

EN: The front pattern is to be cut on the fold; in this case 3cm are taken from the sides and the remaining is the dart width. There are no vertical darts on the bodice front, yet the position of this dart relatively to the center front usually corresponds to half of the cross bust measurement. The length of the front dart is 9cm (again measured from the rectangle frame to the tip of the dart). The waist is also lowered 1,5cm at the center front tapering to nothing at the sides.

---

The neckline and armhole facings / As vistas do decote e das cavas:

EN: The facings width is 2,5cm plus SAs. I suppressed the shoulder seam on the armhole facings, joining front and back, so on the left there’s the front&back armhole facing, above there’s the back neckline facing and below there’s the front neckline facing. All facings should be interfaced; I also interfaced the SAs at the back zipper placement seam.

---

EN: I’m using special purpose basting thread (common in Portugal) which is a kind of cotton thread loosely twisted and thicker than regular sewing thread. With this thread I can easily perform tailor tacks with a single thread. I stitch a long running stitch leaving long loops of thread, then I unpin the pattern, pull the two layers of fabric aside and cut the threads in between. Then I thread trace as I remove the tailor tacks.

---

The back vent / A racha atrás

EN: (ETA) I’m making a back vent with extended facing; you can see in the photo that I interfaced the extended facing (left) and the facing (right) of the vent. I plan on sewing the hem with mitered corners.

---

EN: For now I am finishing all the thread tracing and tomorrow I will overcast all the SAs before starting with the construction. I will need an invisible zipper longer than 65cm and the only one I have in my stash with this length is navy blue… Although the dress is multicolored, the wrong side of the fabric is white so a white zipper would be more appropriate... I’ll go to the notions store next Monday to see if I find a matching zipper. See you next time!

---
