Dress with asymmetric shoulder pleats: Sewing in the facings – Vestido com ombro pregueado assimétrico: aplicação das vistas

EN Summary: In this article I explain how I sewed the facings of the dress (both armhole and neckline facings) linking up to a tutorial on finishing facing with an invisible zipper

---

EN: As you can observe on the first photo, first I stitched the shoulder seams and the side seams on the facings; I started with the armhole facings, stitching them to the armholes right sides facing  together (stitch with the dress side up so you can see the stay stitching; the final stitching should be right on the inside of the stay stitching, so the stay stitches are not visible when the facing is turned in. Next I trim and clip the SAs:

---

EN: The SAs are then pressed towards the facing (after taking the photo I also graded the SAs, trimming the facing SA a little more):

---

EN: The junction seam is then under-stitched (another row of stitching next to the seam, on the facing side that holds the SAs towards the facing):

---

EN: When turning in the facing, the outer side is favored and the facing and under-stitching are hidden on the wrong side. The edge is then basted in place, pressed and tacked down to the side and shoulder seams on the wrong side.

---

EN: The neckline facing is stitched in a similar manner; because there is an invisible zipper on the CB, I used Els tutorial on how to finish facing with an invisible zipper (click here) but omitting the loop and button because I believe a zipper end so high on the neckline won’t be subject to much stress. Below you can see the end result on both right and wrong sides:

---

EN: You should notice that the facings are rather narrow; I plan to add a full lining to the dress which will be hand-stitched to the facings, zipper tape and back vent. I will explain how I altered the dress pattern for that effect but before there will be one last article addressing the back vent and mitered corners. See you all soon!

---
