Dress with asymmetric shoulder pleats: The invisible zipper – Vestido com ombro pregueado assimétrico: o fecho invisível

EN Summary: I’ve been way from blogging because my son had chickenpox and only resumed sewing the dress this weekend. So far I have sewn the CB invisible zipper, shoulder seams and side seams, which allows me to check the fit of the dress one last time. In today’s article I address the method used to sew the invisible zipper and a few considerations about the process in general.

---

EN: The method for stitching the invisible zipper that works best for me is the one explained by Sewing Diva Els (click here). With this method the CB seam is not sewn last, it’s sewn before stitching the invisible zipper. The zipper placement seam is also sewn with long loose tension stitches and pressed open; after removing the loose stitches, the crease will serve as a guide to stitch the zipper. The zipper coil is pressed open to facilitate the process of stitching really close to it and Els prefers using a regular zipper foot to do the job, instead of the special purpose invisible zipper foot. I really advise you to thoroughly read her tutorial; there are a lot of very useful tips which make all the difference on the final result.

EN: Basting the zipper tape to the SAs really helps to perfectly align the intersecting horizontal seams, as is the case with the waist seam. If you don’t get it right the first time, use the seam ripper and start again because nothing screams“homemade” more than badly aligned seams and/or puckering on the end of the invisible zipper (using the pejorative meaning of homemade here).

---

EN: At this stage I have the front and back of the dress ready to be sewn together at the shoulder and side seams. After stitching these seams the dress is ready to perform one last fitting session. Besides checking if the dress fits well on the body, the hem should also be double checked for length and leveling.

---

EN: Next I will attach the facings to the neckline and armholes, sew the back vent with mitered corners and hand stitch the hem of the dress. Lastly there’s the lining; although it is optional, I decided on adding a full lining and I will write an entire article devoted to it after I show you the facings and the back vent. Stay tuned!

---

that is looking so good. I love the fabric, is it cotton pique? which is a fabric very popular when I first started sewing but now I rarely see it in the shop. Can't wait to see the final version.

Hi Beth and thanks!
Yes the fabric is printed pique, but synthetic (check it out here: http://www.gratacos.com/shoponline/42284-001.html). I’d love to finish this dress over the weekend, let’s see if I can,…

Besos!
