Foi uma longa semana de trabalho - It has been a long working week

This week went on really slow, maybe because there wasn't much time left to sew. Today I got home feeling very tired and without strength or conviction to sit by the sewing machine. When I'm feeling this way I usually lie down in my big blue sofa and I keep my hands busy doing some knitting or crocheting by the sound of calm music. Hopefully tomorrow I will have the entire morning available just to sew my pinstriped dress.

Before I go to bed (it's about 00:15 now and I plan to get up early in the morning), I would like to share two things with you; the first is this garment pictured in the Mangoshop newsletter (the skirt detail really caught my eye):

The other thing is a link that came to my knowledge through the Moda Lisboa newsletter:

Roupas favoritas -"Go-To" garments

Summerset wrote a post asking about favorite garments, our "go-to" garments; my immediate answer was the Orwell coat, of course! Right now it's my favorite garment and I feel wonderfully well when I'm wearing it, but this coat is well known to Summerset and most of my readers so I decided to open my wardrobe closet and pick something else to show you.

This is one of my favorite garments; it's a long purple leather coat I bought seven years ago and I still wear it because, as far as I am concerned, it will never be out:
This coat is well fitted to the figure and it has a front metal zipper that closes up to the end of the collar. Its collar is one of the details I like the most:
The lining is made of purple satin; as you can see it's a very luxurious coat and I save it to wear on special occasions.
Although my favorite color is Red, the most abundant color in my wardrobe is Black. I have a particular black dress that I tend to wear very often; I bought it at S. Paulo on one of my business trips to Brazil:
This dress is about six years old but I still wear it and I feel great when I'm wearing it too!

There is also another black suit that I would like to show you but I don't keep it at home because it no longer fits me. I made this suit more than ten years ago to attend to my father's second marriage and I still think it's the most beautiful garment I've ever made. I don't have it here but I have the Burda International featuring the original model, so I scanned the pictures from it; believe me, mine was exactly like this, even the buttons were alike:
I couldn't find the velvet embroidery for the sleeves, collar and side of the shirt on sale so I just made it myself. First I made a drawing of it; then I interfaced a piece of black velvet and I thread traced the drawing using thin black embroidery thread; then I did a satin stitch along the threaded lines using the same black thread and I trimmed the velvet close to the satin stitched lines to make it look exactly as the original model; the result was perfect!
Next Fall/Winter I plan to make this suit again, this time I will trace a size 38 instead of a 36 with a size 34 waist!

Vestido em croché: as costas - Crochet Dress: the back

The back of the crochet dress is finished (minus the crocheted hem that will be done after both front and back are finished and joined as one) and so far I've used tree of the nine skeins ordered from Phildar. Now I can say for sure that nine skeins will be enough to finish this project and I can slow the pace down (summer is still far away…). I wanted to show you my progress so far;for that purpose I pinned the back of the dress to my dressform and took some pictures:
Here's a close-up from the crochet stitch:
This will be a close fitting dress; the instructions mention a side zipper, or else I wouldn't be able to put it on. I'm thinking of adding some kind of lining to the skirt (not to the crocheted hem, only to the upper skirt) to prevent the stitch from stretching and also to avoid seeing through it.

Até à próxima!
See you next time!

Costurar a vista inteiriça no vestido (Parte I) - Sewing the dress all-in-one shoulder facing (Part I)

After reading the comments on the link provided at the end of one of my previous blog entries (sewing the darts), I realized that my preferred method to sew the facing/lining to a sleeveless dress is the method described by Meg (see comments). This method implies that the facing side seams and the dress side seams match, so they can be stitched as one. With this dress this doesn't happen because the dress has a side panel with two seams on each side and the facing has regular side seams. To follow this method I would have to alter the facing pattern as follows, so that a single side seam on the facing matches the back side seam on the dress:
This way I could sew the dress side back seam and the facing side seam as one, as Meg explained. Unfortunately when I saw Meg's comment I had already cut the facings and there was no extra fabric left to re-cut them, so I'm unable to put this method into practice now. I will use another method (you can see its full description on the “High Fashion Sewing Secrets from the World’s Best Designers by Claire Shaeffer” book, on page 215. This method can be used to sew any all-in-one shoulder facing even if there is no side or back closure on the garment.

Before explaining this method it's important to make sure that the facing is a little narrower than the dress on the shoulders; the shoulder width on the facing should be less 1/8" on each side of the shoulder.

The first step is sewing the side seams on both the dress and the facing, leaving the shoulder seams open:

Then I just pin the facing to the dress, right sides facing each other, so that the stitching lines match along the neckline and the armscye. I hand baste and I remove the pins, then I machine stitch where the green lines show in next picture (I stop about 2" away from the shoulder seams):
Take note that you should leave the seam open on the back, about 2" before reaching the zipper opening so you can finish the zipper opening later:
After machine stitching I remove all the hand bastings; I remove the thread tracing only on the previously stitched lines (green lines above). After this I grade and clip the neckline and the armscye seams as you can see in the next picture: the dress SAs are graded wider that the facing SAs, clipping is done so the little "v"s don't match on both SAs:

I made two pant suits last year and this is one of them. The jacket and the knickers belong to a set of matching coordinates that was featured in BWOF 09/2006 (click here). From this set I’ve also made the Coat (shorter version), the Marlene Dietrich style trousers/pants and the shirt (both trousers and shirt will be reviewed later); I still want to make the cap, the necktie and the vest in that set.
(Sorry for the showing shirt underneath the jacket but when I noticed that it was too late!)
Description: Jacket and knickers both men’s-style; the original model features ravelling edges on the jacket (front edges, hem, pockets and elbow patches are all ravelling); the jacket combines too coordinating fabrics, there are wide lapels, patch pockets, elbow patches and cuffs; the knickers have leg cuffs, waist band yoke, front zipper and buttons, also two front pockets.

Podem ver também o esquemático deste conjunto:
Here is the line drawing for the pant suit:
E fotos do modelo original:
And a few pictures from the original model:

A jaqueta é completamente forrada.
Fabric used: this set uses two coordinate fabrics for the jacket: for the lapels/front facings, patch pockets, cuffs and elbow patches, houndstooth fabric is used; for the remaining jacket and knickers, glen checks (we call it Prince of Wales). The jacket is fully lined.

The houndstooth fabric behaved very well when handled; unfortunately I can't say the same for the glen checks fabric. As usual I pre-treated both fabrics; I washed them both on a gentle cycle, left them to dry outside and pressed them before taking them to the cutting table. After being treated this way, the glen checks fabric turned out too soft and it wouldn't hold its form as it should be. Even after being interfaced, this fabric tends to wrinkle a lot (see the pictures of me wearing the suit). Also the checks aren't regular so I had a hard time trying to match them.

Size: ranging from 34 to 44, I traced a 40 for the jacket (which I regret, a 38 would do just fine) and a 38 for the knickers.

Pattern/model alterations: I kept the original model style lines except for the ravelling edges; with the jacket on I noticed it needs a small sway back adjustment, perhaps because this size is too big for my figure; I will fix the back in the near future.

Now I will show you some pictures with all the details I consider relevant for the making of this suit, mainly I want to show you how I managed to match the plaids; the matching of the plaids is better achieved if the fabric is cut single layered instead of folded in half; the right side is facing up and the pattern pieces are carefully placed so that the vertical/horizontal stripes match on almost every seam. There are also other details to take into account, like keeping a vertical stripe on the CF/CB seams but I will explain this as I show you the detail pictures.

A jaqueta: The jacket:

Front: note that the CF line matches the middle of a vertical stripe so both left and right fronts match exactly when the jacket is buttoned; also see how the horizontal lines on the sleeves are aligned with the horizontal lines on the jacket front; another important detail is the symmetry of the collar:

Back: once more note the CB alignment and the symmetry between left and right back; you can see here that the collar is not matching the checks on the back but this is so because I thought that it would be more important to balance the front edges on the collar. There is a back seam on the sleeves but you can't see this easily because of the checks perfect alignment.
Side view: the sleeves hang smoothly to the side of the body, you can see here the elbow patch and the buttoned cuff:

Detalhe da cotoveleira na manga:

O punho, por fora e por dentro; o forro é apanhado no punho:
Cuffs, outside and inside views:

Patch pockets: the pocket is lined, stitched by hand to the jacket front and then topstitched very close to the edge (I followed Claire Chaeffer's method):

Here you see the front and the buttoned yoke; note the horizontal and vertical alignments; note this on the side pockets which are almost invisible:
O detalhe do fecho na frente:
Front zipper detail:
I used lining here (pocket inside) instead of fashion fabric to reduce bulk:
This is the back, once more note the way the checks match and the symmetry:
The leg cuffs (outside and inside view):

Fiquem bem!
Conclusion: this was my first plaids project; it was a wonderful sewing learning experience for me; I don't say I'm 100% satisfied with the end result mainly because of the Prince of Wales fabric, I think it's poor in quality and I should have waited to find a better fabric, but I was too eager to make this suit and I used what I found available at the time. Also I will fix the jacket back for a better fit in the near future. Happy sewing everybody!

O fecho invisível - The invisible zipper

Personally I like to sew the zipper before sewing the side and shoulder seams, this way the zipper is easier to handle and you can work it on a flat surface. This particular zipper is called "invisible zipper" because when it is ready in place no seam is visible on the right side. If you sew this zipper right you'll get professional results.

The method I'm using is very well explained and illustrated (my dress is black so not the best choice to show the details) at THE SEWING DIVAS blog, a tutorial by Els. I've chosen this method for two reasons: firstly it makes use of an ordinary zipper foot instead of the special purpose foot for invisible zippers (which I don't like) shown in the next picture (as far as I know, these special foots are sold at the notion stores here; I tried asking for one at the local Singer supplier and they told me they didn't have any (!!) ):
Secondly, after trying this method once I've obtained the best results. If you want to try the conventional method using the special zipper foot, just follow this link: http://www.sewing.org/enthusiast/html/el_zipinvis.html.

I'm not going to repeat Els’ instructions but I will show you some pictures of what I did for this dress.

As you can see, this method calls for the back seam to be stitched from the hem to the back opening notch (if you are following the conventional method this seam should be left open):
From the zipper opening signal to the neck I just machine baste the opening (I set the stitch to its maximum length and I set the needle thread tension dial to its minimum), this way it’s easier to press the SAs flat along the center back line (again, first I press along the stitching line), using a seam roll to prevent impressions on the right side of the garment:
After the CB seam is pressed flat I like to serge the CB SAs using a three thread overlock stitch (this is also what I am going to do for the side and shoulder seams):
Now I just pull the bobbin thread along the zipper opening to easily unstitch the machine basting; the fold lines along this opening will serve as a guide for sewing the zipper in place:

Don't forget to press the zipper coils flat! This is essential for this method to succeed!
Here you can see how I first secure one of the sides using pins:
Then I hand baste the zipper with silk thread 1mm away from the coils (so there is some space for the machine stitches latter):
And here you see me stitching the fist side of the zipper (I made a mistake and I started on the right side instead of the left side as instructed by Els; this is not a big mistake but this way the dress goes to the right side of the machine, instead of hanging on the left side where there is more space); I show you this photo because my zipper presser foot is different from Els’, but both are zipper feet. With my machine I had to fine tune the position of the needle so it would stay right next to the zipper coil; this is very important if you want the zipper to be truly invisible.
There's no need to repeat every step of the tutorial so I leave you with a picture of the final result; note that the pinstripes are symmetrical along the CB/zipper seam (that's why I thread trace every line very carefully!).
Fiquem bem!
Be well!
