Vestido Jocavi: frente e costas - Jocavi dress: front and back

Continuing our sewing adventure, I will show you what I've done until yesterday afternoon (today I have the outer shell, lining and straps ready for assembly).

The execution steps are as follows (I'm not following the magazine's instructions but some of the steps may be the same)

1 – Costurar as pinças em todas as peças; passa-las na direcção do meio;
1 – Sew all the darts; press them towards the center;

Frente/Front:

2 – Unir a costura do meio do peito, passar a costura a ferro e abri-la a ferro (este é o procedimento básico para todas as costuras que têm de ser abertas a ferro) e acabar os valores de costura com a corta-e-cose; ver na figura onde se deve golpear os valores de costura (ou descoser, no caso de baixo);
2 – Join the upper body bodice CF seam, stitch it and press the seams (first along the seams, then press open; that's the way to do it on every "pressed open" seam) and serge the SAs; see the picture bellow where to clip the SAs (the CF seam should be unstitched at the bottom for the SA width)
3 – Sew the upper front bodice to the skirt, one seam at a time (left and right seams); be careful so the two seams meet at the exact spot on the center. Press the SAs upwards. Serge.

É assim que fica do lado direito:
This is how it looks on the right side:
E do lado do avesso:
And the wrong side:
Costas/Back:

4 – Sew the upper back bodice to the back skirt; SAs are also pressed upwards and serged:

5 – Serge the CB SAs (I can do this before pressing because the Serafil thread doesn't leave an impression on the fabric); stitch the CB from hem to the zipper opening and apply the invisible zipper; be careful so the horizontal seams & seamlines match.
You can see here how I sew the invisible zipper; if you make this an unlined dress, you should take a look at these excellent instructions on how to finish the zipper on the wrong side, by Summerset!

6 – Serge the side SAs; sew the side seams and press them open (there is a side slit on the longer side of the dress).

Agora tenho um tesouro para vos mostrar:
I have a treasure to show you:
This is a vintage tailor presser buck; this one is shaped like a bean, so it's ideal for pressing both outward and inward seams, like the hip/waist seams on this dress! I got it on Ebay, thanks to a very dear Friend that tipped me off. I was very lucky to get it at a low price! Since I read this article (Part 1 and Part 2) I was eager to get a presser buck for myself!

De volta ao vestido:
Back to the dress:

7 – Sew the lining exactly the same way as the dress .

Until yesterday's afternoon I've spent 22h (total) on this dress. It is coming together really fast because I didn't make a muslin and also I didn't have to deal with fitting issues or pattern alterations of any kind. See you soon!

Chegou correio! - I got mail!

Just take a look at the goodies I've just received!

Conhecem este livro? Parece-vos familiar? É “O Grande Livro da Costura” das Selecções do Reader’s Digest, edição Portuguesa! A minha Mãe enviou-mo há algumas semanas sabendo que eu iria fazer bom uso dele!
Does this book look familiar? This is the Portuguese edition for the “Complete Guide to Sewing” (Reader's Digest)! My mother sent it to me a few weeks ago knowing that I would make good use of it!
This is a very good sewing book covering lots of subjects; it features excellent line drawings and some pictures (516 pages!). Here's a picture of the Index (in Portuguese):
Thanks to this book I found out the Portuguese word for "clapper": "batente" and also the Portuguese words for "tailor ham": "almofada de alfaiate"; this would translate word by word to "tailor pillow", only the order of the words are reversed ("alfaiate" = "tailor" and "almofada" = "pillow").
More goodies: this is a Birthday present sent by Tini! It's a German magazine filled with LOTs of wonderful models to crochet! Tini, I might need your help for translating some of the instructions!
Thank you so much Tini! You're the best! :*******

It's not over yet: today I also received the black silk organza that Marji so kindly offered to get me, because it is so hard to find near where I live:
Marji, it's perfect! Thank you so much! I hope you get my package soon too!

I'm also expecting a package from Summerset and I can't wait to get it!

Amanhã mostro o meu progresso no vestido Jocavi! Até amanhã!
Tomorrow I will show you my progress on the Jocavi dress! See you tomorrow!

Preparação antes de começar a coser – Prep work before starting to sew

Some very important tasks are performed before getting to the actual sewing part; in my case these tasks are pre-shrinking the fabrics, cutting, fusing interfacing and thread tracing. All these tasks take some time but are crucial to get the best final results when making a garment.

My fashion fabric was already washed; the satin lining (yes, it's final; I'm using satin for lining this dress!) was steam pressed so that if any shrinkage has to happen, it happens before and not during the making of the dress.

This fabric is quite slippery and cutting it right can be hard to accomplish; there are several tips for cutting slippery fabrics, such as covering the cutting table with a large sheet of paper or an old bed sheet; using weights to keep the fabric in place is also a good idea. I like to use a vinyl table-cloth with the wrong side facing up because these table-cloths are hard enough to prevent the pins from pining the table-cloth together with the fabric; this way I can keep using pins to attach the pattern to the fabric before I cut the fabric.

I made a change to the original model: I'm skipping the large hem band and sew the skirt as a single panel skirt instead. I decided to do so because there is no need of a hem band in this printed fabric and also because I wanted to save fabric to make the dress longer as possible. All I had to do was placing the band pattern next to the skirt pattern and treat them both as one, as you can see in the next picture (this is one of the back panels; the front is done in the same way):
One other thing: the fabric's right side is facing up when laying the pattern and cutting so I'm thread tracing on the right side of the fabric this time.

This is a very sheer fabric and reinforcing the zipper opening is mandatory; I'm using on grain strips of that very thin knit fusible interfacing I've been using on other projects. See in the next few pictures how the strips are kept in place by the thread tracing; after the thread tracing is done, the strips can be easily fused in place:

Lado do avesso:
Wrong side:
Besides the zipper opening I decided to interface the upper fronts and backs to provide the fabric with more stability in the upper body area. The knit fusible interfacing is very sheer so it doesn't alter the feel of the fashion fabric too much, it still drapes well after being interfaced. See how the interfacing is kept in place by the thread traced lines, ready to be fused:
The lining is cut exactly like the fashion fabric but now the wrong side of the fabric is facing up while cutting (If you don't do this you'll end up with non matching hems on the lining and fabric so pay close attention!). It is easy to see which side is the wrong side on the satin because the right side is always shinier.

Next picture shows all the fabric/lining pieces ready to start sewing:
All this prep work took about 12h until now (also counting the time spent tracing the pattern). Not bad! This was possible because today I didn't have to go to work so I've spent most of the day at the sewing table! I still have my sewing machine and serger to set up and run some tests on the stitches, though. See you soon!

Apresentando o vestido Jocavi - Introducing the Jocavi dress

The pattern for this dress is featured in the June 2006 Patrones Extra:
The upper chest is shaped by the gathering caused by the enclosed straps that cross on the back. The front and back are shaped by vertical darts and there is an invisible zipper on the back (zipper vent measures about 35cm). The hem has a wide band and is asymmetrical.

Esquemático e diagrama de corte:
Linedrawing and cutting layout:
Notice that the pattern is laid on a single layer of fabric; thread tracing will become much easier and quick this way.

I chose this model for its stylelines and also because my fabric matches exactly the amount needed for this model (1,35m x 1,35m). This fabric is a little transparent so making an unlined dress out of it is out of the question. My problem now is deciding which fabric is better for lining the dress; I have two options in mind right now: black gauze from my stash and very thin dark blue satin. The fashion fabric is very sheer and light so using the gauze wouldn't alter the drape; on the other hand, the gauze is transparent so all the inner construction details would become apparent on the wrong side. The satin has a similar drape to the fashion fabric and there is no see-through so I'm leaning to this last option. Besides, I confess loving the touch of the satin close to my skin!

Here you have the notions that I've gathered so far:
You can see the fashion fabric, the black gauze, the satin, the matching thread for the satin and also Serafil thread, a special purpose thread for serging. I found out about this very thin thread reading a blog entry by Els at The Sewing Divas. I will use this thread on both sewing machine and serger together with size 60 (very thin) needles. The zipper is longer than what I really need: 50cm (I intended to buy a 40cm zipper – 5cm longer than the zipper opening - but there were none available) but that is no problem because I can shorten the zipper. One thing missing in the picture is the interfacing strips for stabilizing the zipper opening.

Another thing I might use is a crocheted trim made with the same yarn I use on the Burda crochet jacket, but that is one possibility that needs more thought.

Well, the pattern is traced and I plan to cut the fashion fabric today; until now I’ve spent 1h30 on this dress (mostly tracing the pattern).

Até à próxima!
See you!

Agradecimentos e respostas a comentários – Many thanks and answering to comments

Thank you all so much for commenting and visiting Couture et Tricot! I love getting your comments and knowing that you enjoy this adventure in the sewing/knitting/crocheting land! It feels marvelously well having all these Friends sharing the same passion; before discovering this large community I used to feel lonely somehow. After meeting you all my feeling of accomplishment has grown and getting to know others that also love making garments (sewing, knitting, crocheting, what else?) has been wonderful.

Yesterday I received a comment from Henriette on the BWOF 01/2007 #106 Dress asking me to estimate how many hours I have spent making that dress; I answered back saying that I would guess about 70 hours (the Paul Smith dress took less time, I think!) and that comment gave me the idea to start a project log listing the daily amount of time spent on each project. From now on, the new projects will include that listing.

As for new sewing projects, I've started a new one already using that printed fabric matching the crochet jacket colorway! I traced the pattern yesterday (it's a Patrones Patern so I had to trace the size 42 in between sizes, as for the Paul Smith dress) and today I bought some more notions that I needed. I will present the model and the notions very soon so stay tuned!

Até já!

See you!

Conclusion: This dress was simple and quick to pull through (At least for me!): I took one week to finish it. The model is adequate for this fabric for its simplicity and retro style; 1,10m of fabric is barely enough to make this dress. The final result reminds me those dresses worn in the 60's! I didn't make any alteration/adjustment to the pattern and I plan to use it again in the future because this dress fits me like a glove!

As vistas no decote e nos ombros - Neckline and shoulder facings

Bom dia Amigas!
Hi sewing Friends!

As explained before, the making of this dress is very similar to the making of the BWOF 01/2007 #106 Dress, except for the tracing of the pattern (I already explained how I did it), for not interfacing the entire dress and, finally, for the facing type and construction. Today I will explain how I sew the facings but first let me go through the construction steps for this dress:

1 – Cortar o vestido e alinhavar as linhas de costura e outras marcações;
1 – Cut the fashion fabric and thread trace all the outlines and markings;

2 – Cortar o forro usando o molde depois de descontar as vistas e alinhavar as linhas de costura e outras marcações;
2 – Cut the lining using the same pattern after cutting off the facing width and thread trace all the outlines and markings;

3 – Coser as pinças do vestido (ver aqui como fiz para o vestido #106);
3 – Sew the darts (see here how I did this for the #106 dress);

4 – Close the CB seam from the zipper placement mark to the hem and apply the invisible zipper (see here how I did this for the #106 dress)

5 – Coser as costuras dos ombros no vestido;
5 – Sew the shoulder seams on the dress;

In the next picture you can see the dress with the side seams left open:
This type of facing is called shaped facing; unlike the facing on the #106 dress, here the armholes and neckline have separate facings; this is possible because the shoulder seams are wide enough to accommodate two separate facings.

6 – Sew the shoulder seams on the facings (neckline and armholes); serge the all the SAs, except those which are to be stitched to the neckline and armholes. You can see this in the following pictures:

7 – Place the facings on the dress, right sides together, matching the armhole and the neckline seams; sew all around the armholes and neckline; on the back neckline, leave 6-7 cm unstitched before reaching the zipper opening, this way the facing with invisible zipper can be finished the same way as for the #106 dress. Trim and grade the SAs (the facing SAs are narrower), clip along the curved edges:
8 – Press SAs towards the facing and baste them in place; understitch the facings (stitch the facings very close to the seam, catching the SAs on the wrong side). Stop understitching before reaching the open seam on the back.
9 – Reduce bulk by trimming the facing SAs and notching at the fold where two seams cross; turn the facings to the wrong side of the dress, hand baste the edges using silk thread and press on the wrong side. Don’t press the opened seams close to the zipper.
10 – Sew the side seams on the dress and armhole facings on one single step (you know the drill: press both sides, press open and finish with the serger); once more, trim, grade and notch the facings; turn the armhole facings inside, hand baste using silk thread and press on the wrong side.
11 – I hand stitch the facings to the dress on the dress SAs ONLY (shoulders and armholes), to keep the facings in place.
Next I will finish the facing with the invisible zipper (see here how I did this for the #106 dress), sew the lining, hand stitch it to the facings and zipper tape, hem the dress and the lining and the dress is done.

I big hug to Isabelle who is going through some rough moments in life. Isabelle, my thoughts and prayers are with you, be strong.
