I want to show you a few more details on the making of this jacket, focusing on the things I did differently from the instructions and also why I did them differently.

The key factor to take into account in this case is the fabric, which is thick yet its hand is soft (it's a little spongy). Taking this fact into account, instead of pressing the darts towards the bottom like stated in the instructions (they would show on the right side and they would turn out too bulky), I cut them open stopping close to their tip (after they are sewn) and pressed them open using the tailor ham as a pressing surface; on some fabrics a toothpick could be used to better press the tip of the dart but in this case this wasn’t necessary due to the fabric's characteristics:
I also diverged from the instructions on the making of the pocket flaps; their inside is made of lining and the outside of fashion fabric. After having both parts interfaced, instead of machine stitching them together and then turn them to their right side, I decided to sew them by hand, as illustrated next:

This procedure guarantees that the lining won't show on the right side and also guarantees perfect results for heavy fabrics. I did this before on the Orwell coat, where the pocket flaps had piped edges. The pockets were also sewn exactly as the Orwell coat's pockets (you can read the step-by-step tutorial if you click here).

As paletas ainda têm que ser passadas a ferro para remover as marcas dos alinhavos e dos alfinetes que usei para as confeccionar.
There's yet a final pressing to be made to the pocket flaps in order to remove the markings left by the thread tracing and pins involved in the process.

In the meanwhile this jacket is finished (in fact I'm wearing it today) and I've started the leopard coat, which makes use of the same pattern, except it's longer, has slanted welt pockets and turned up sleeve cuffs. Next time I will show you the finished purple jacket!

Tany,
I love how you did the pocket flaps. I didn't notice this on the Orwell coat so I plan to go back and read that.

Thanks for the tips on the pocket flaps. So did you topstitch before hand stitching the lining to the front of the pocket?

I am also looking forward to seeing the final garment :)

Tany said...

Vicki: You're welcome! Yes I did topstitch before handsewing the lining (other wise the topstitching would be visible on the lining side and I didn't want that to happen); in fact I triple stitched, just like you did some time ago!

Berry: Thank you! And of course I don't mind that at all! :)))

Tany - My name is Severine Grimaud. I have been reading your blog for about two months now and am absolutely enthralled. You are not only a very prolific seamstress but also I have never seen anyone pay so much attention to detail. You are truly amazing! I own an online fashion magazine called Inner French Girl. We do a regular feature in our daily bulletins where we highlight a great fashion and or sewing blog. Yours is my absolute favorite of all time. I am there fore awarding you the Fashion Blog Award. I can't find an email adress on your website. If you would email me, I will send you the award graphic or you can get it from Isabelle, who we awarded last week.
Thanks
Severine

Oh Tany, I cannot wait to see your jacket worn! :) I am sure it is fantastic, and the idea of a 60s cute little jacket in a very trendy purple is really brilliant!
Big hugs!!

Bueno Tany, gracias, saludos, abrazos, etc. etc. y a tu disposición. Paco.

I just started reading your blog and I really love it. Your work is impeccable! Could we get a picture of the finished jacket? I would love to see it

Obrigada a todos(as)!
Thank you all!

Severine: Oh my, I'm so honoured!! Thank you so much! I'll write to Isabelle askink her for your email because I want to thank you personally for this! Welcome to Couture et Tricot, I hope to hear from you often!

¡Saludos, eres siempre bienvenido!

Kathy: Thank you! I will post pictures of the finished jacket on me, and a completed review on Saturday (I have to wait until I get some free time to take the pictures in daylight); until then, it won't be possible because of my full time job. Welcome to Couture et Tricot!

tens algum conselho? obrigada
