Knee-length skinny jeans (DP Studio Le306b "Jean ajusté à 5 poches", version courte)

EN Summary: What started as a test garment to assess the fit of this pattern, turned out to be a perfectly wearable pair of knee-length skinny jeans. Keep reading the full article, originally posted on https://tanysewsandknits.blogspot.com.

EN: I was planning on making the longer version of this pattern in a tea-green stretch cotton but I wanted to try the pattern first. I had this old muted brown stretch fabric, barely enough to cut the shorter version of the jeans, and decided to use it to try out the fit of the pattern first, practice the techniques, the top-stitching, and also get the proportions, back pocket placements, etc. The truth is: I got carried away and decided to make a real garment out of it because it goes really well with the top "clin d'oeil" that I had just made (click here).
This pattern can still be found at DP Studio (too bad they are stopping their pattern business for the DIY market) and at some other pattern selling websites. It's a pattern that keeps all the keys of the classic skinny jeans: it sits on the natural waist, on the back it has a yoke and two patch pockets, on the front there's the typical round hip pockets and a small coin pocket, and a classic jeans fly-front zipper. The waistband is narrow and has belt-loops. The only deviation from the classic model is the seams that run vertically on the front. This model is proposed in two lengths: the longer length features a long slit (optional) and the shorter just below the knee length has hem turn-ups. This jeans model is designed for stretch fabrics only.

EN: For the top-stitching I used regular brown thread in the bobbin and special purpose jeans top-stitching thread in ocher color in the needle. I managed to sew at a more or less consisting distance from the seam using just my regular industrial machine presser foot but in my next version I will probably use the industrial compensating feet that allow optimal precision and more speed for this type of stitching.

EN: Here's a close-up of the hip pockets and fly-front. I stitched the buttonhole on my trusty Pfaff Ambition Essential sewing machine, again using regular thread in the bobbin and top-stitching thread in the needle. The golden flat shank button looks really well on these jeans and is actually a spare from a store-bought garment; I always save the spare buttons for using in this type of sewing projects:
---
EN: The pocket bags are cut on a single piece; in this case I used self-fabric but usually they are cut from tightly woven cotton, often playing with a nice print. Another detail that can be appreciated is the bias binding inside finishing of the waistband:
---

EN: Here's the back of the pants: I found the pocket placement and size very flattering on me, so I didn't change it from the original:
---

EN: Take note that the top-stitching always look a little wobbling on stretchy fabrics; when the jeans are worn the wobbling disappears entirely. Let's take a closer look on the fly-front zipper now:
---

EN: As you can see, the inside finishing is exactly the same found in good quality store-bough jeans:
---

EN: The turn-ups are sewn making a wide enough hem enabling to turn the hem up on the outside without seeing the edge of the hem allowance on the right side; the fold is tacked along the inner and outer seams of the pants to keep it secured:
---

CONCLUSION: I really loved sewing this pattern and the end result is exactly what I would expect from a good quality store bought skinny jeans. The pattern instructions come both in French and English and I followed the French instructions (so I can't speak for the English translation), which I found well illustrated and well explained. The waistband feels a little tight on me (I guess there's little to no wearing ease in this pattern drafted for stretch fabrics) so my advice is to measure the waistband and calculate its finished measurements before cutting. With some denim stretch fabrics (providing they have a good recovery and do not stretch out of shape) you may also skip the interfacing which will make the waistband more comfortable.
Thank you all for visiting, hope you enjoyed this article! I know some of you are thinking I am sewing too much DP Studio patterns in a row, but I got this urge when I found out they were closing their pattern production for the DIY market,... I really love their designer approach to pattern making and I am studding their pattern making method, so naturally I feel like trying out my nearly completed pattern collection from them and getting the most out of it.
T'ill next time, you guys stay safe and try to be the best versions of yourselves!

Thanks, I always enjoy your posts and learn something! I'm amazed at your sewing output too; your garments which look very expertly made with lots of time consuming details - which I like too. Also happy to see your photos with watermarks.😊
