The original was made of tweed with shredded (fringe) hem finish. It's a basic pleated shorts pattern with slanted hip pockets, side invisible zipper and wide straight waistband.

PT: A minha primeira versão destes calções usou o bordado inglês que sobrou do meu projeto anterior (aqui), e de acordo com as características do tecido não fiz o acabamento desfiado na bainha, acrescentando em vez disso margens de bainha normais (5cm). Talvez porque o molde está pensado para um tecido volumoso, o cós é bastante generoso para o tamanho, tendo alguma folga adicional em comparação com a tabela de medidas. O cós não tem molde, são fornecidas instruções para cortar um rectângulo com as dimensões finais, incluindo 1,5cm de margens de costura a toda a volta; como tal, descontando 3cm no comprimento do rectângulo, é possível determinar facilmente a medida do cós pronto. No meu caso, cortei o tamanho 40 sem alterações. A principal alteração que fiz ao modelo foi acrescentar um forro de cambraia, porque o tecido ´tem buraquinhos e por uma questão de modéstia.

EN: My first version of these shorts was made using the remnant eyelet fabric from my previous project (here); I skipped the fringe hem (it wouldn't make sense in this fabric) and added 2" hem allowances to the pattern instead. The waistband is not included in the pattern sheet; instead there are instructions to cut a rectangle with specific measurements, which include 5/8" seam allowances all around. Perhaps due to the fact that the pattern was conceived to be used with tweed or boucle, the finished waistband measurement is more generous than other patterns when compared with the waist measurement in the size chart, so you may need to check that out and adjust if necessary (it's easy to determine the finished waistband measurement by subtracting 5/4" of the rectangle's total length). In my case I cut size 40 without alterations. The only main alteration that I did was adding a full cambric (cotton batiste) lining to the shorts, for modesty purposes.
PT: O molde em si é bastante fácil de confecionar; a confeção dos bolsos e a aplicação do fecho invisível são as únicas técnicas específicas que é preciso dominar. Primeiro fixam-se as pregas (atenção à direção correta assinalada no molde) e confecionam-se os bolsos; depois, nas partes de trás fecham-se as pinças. Costas e frente podem depois ser cosidas na costura lateral e entre-perna (deixando aberta a abertura para o fecho no lado esquerdo) e por fim cose-se a costura do gancho. Antes de aplicar o zíper, é preciso coser o cós, que deve ser previamente vincado ao meio no sentido do comprimento. O zíper será aplicado também na parte de fora do cós, terminando 5mm antes da dobra vincada. Atenção às costuras de junção do cós junto ao fecho, cujas margens devem ser aparadas para não ficarem volumosas e impedirem que o fecho deslize livremente.

EN: This pattern is quite easy to sew; the slant pockets and the invisible zipper are the only techniques that need to be mastered. First the front pleats are formed and machine basted; then the pockets are constructed. On the back pieces the darts are stitched and pressed towards the center back. Fronts and backs can now be joined at the side seams (leaving the zipper opening on the left side) and inner leg seams. Lastly the crotch seam is sewn. Before stitching in the invisible zipper, the waistband must be applied; remember to press the waistband folded lengthwise in advance, it will make your life much easier. The zipper is stitched with the zipper stops ending 3/8" from the waistband fold. Also remember to cut the excess seam allowances at the joining seam of the waistband to reduce the bulk and prevent the zipper from getting stuck there.

EN: To make sure that the joining seams do match on each side of the zipper, it's advisable to baste the zipper first; then it should be stitched from the top down on both sides.
PT: O forro foi aplicado à maneira industrial (quase completamente à máquina, sendo também cosido à máquina às bainhas dos calções). Para cortar o molde do forro basta sobrepor o molde da parte interior do bolso (encaixe da anca) com o molde da frente, e cortar uma frente sem bolsos; frente e costas devem ser cortadas com apenas 1,5cm de margem de bainha, em vez dos 5cm usados nos calções. Para coser o forro aos calções, coloca-se o forro dentro dos calções como deve ficar no final (avesso contra avesso). Cada costura é cosida metendo a mão entre as duas camadas, agarrando as costuras como deves ser unidas e puxando-as para fora nessa posição para coser; primeiro cose-se o forro às bainhas, depois ao cós, agarrando as costuras e puchando pela abertura do fecho no forro. No final, basta coser esta abertura à mão às fitas do fecho. Finalmente, por último, com o cós dobrado para dentro na posição final, passa-se um pesponto sobre a costura de junção aos calções, pelo lado de fora, prendendo o cós e forro no lugar.

EN: The lining was bagged (almost entirely sewn by machine to the shorts, including the hem allowances). To cut the lining pattern I overlapped the inner pocket piece pattern with the front pattern, cutting the front without the hip pocket slant. The lining was cut with 5/8" hem allowances instead of the 2" used to cut the outer shell. The best way to bag the lining is placing it inside the shorts, wrong sides facing, like it would be in the end; then, to stitch each seam, just slide the hand between both shells, grab the seam to be stitched and pull it out. Start at the hems, then the waistband, grabbing inside through the lining zipper opening and pulling out the seam to be stitched; the lining zipper opening is hand stitched to the zipper tape in the end. The last step is stitching the waistband in the ditch, from the right side, keeping all layers secured.

CONCLUSION: In my opinion this shorts pattern is a basic/classic must-have, equally ideal for wearing with a casual t-shirt and sandals or, on a more dress-up note, with a matching blazer as a shorts-suit (so on trend right now). I highly recommend it!
