V1567 (Paco Peralta for Vogue skirt and top) - Saia e top Paco Peralta para a Vogue

EN Summary: When the new Winter/Holiday Vogue patterns came out, I knew I had to make myself the V1567 skirt and top! The skirt spoke to me "Vivienne Westwood" vibe in gorgeous plaid fabric and I had just what I needed in my stash. Keep reading the full pattern review.

Pattern description (from Vogue Patterns website): "Close fitting top has dolman sleeves. Skirt has waistband with side draping that forms pockets". There is a lot more to say about the skirt pattern, IMO; to some people it may seem like two squares of fabric put together but really, it is not. The skirt is artfully draped so the front includes two self-folding pieces forming the pockets; the side seam, located behind the draped pockets, is cut on the bias so when the skirt is worn it falls perpendicular to the floor, as side seams should. The front looks slightly shorter than the back, but only at the sides; the uneven slits are of extreme elegance. The hem of the skirt is extra large (reaching well above the side slits!), helping with the fabulous drape and hang of the garment. The skirt is better appreciated in movement so I leave you the link to McCalls Pattern Company's post on Instagram, featuring a short video of the skirt being worn by the pattern envelope cover model (click here and hit play!).
The top is simple and very easy to make, yet it is so elegant with its 3/4 sleeves and "bateau" neckline with a slight V-shape on the back. It compliments the skirt beautifully, without attempting to overpower it. You need to truly appreciate pattern drafting and design to give V1567 its deserved credit.

EN: Here are the side pockets, all-in-one with the front panel of the skirt. Such a clever design feature!

EN: The pattern instructions regarding the construction of the skirt will take you into the world of couture, with all seam-allowances and visible edges bias bound, including the hem and waistband edges. The skirt is not lined and these details are well worth the extra time spent, IMO. I would advise sticking to the pattern instructions but if you decide to use the serger instead, be extra careful when finishing the bias cut side seam allowances; the differential feed may be of help in this case. Also keep in mind that seams shouldn't be stretched as you sew, yet they should keep a small amount of flexibility and above all, they should not pucker.
---
EN: Using plaid has its challenges but also some advantages: It's easier to guarantee the straight grain and perfect alignment of the hem. The skirt is cut on the cross-grain and I took some care so there were no dominant vertical stripes along the center front (there is one on the center back though, great for hiding the back invisible zipper) and no dominant horizontal stripes along the hemline. Matching the plaids along the side seams was impossible because front and back have different slopes and the plaids are not perfect squares, but I did make sure the skirt is perfectly symmetrical. I think it turned out very well and pleasing to the eye. I cut size 14 for the skirt without any alterations yet for the top I did fiddle a little with the sleeves. Vogue's pattern grading makes the sleeves too long as sizes progress IMO because it lengthens them in the same proportion as it widens the side seams. This means that from a size 10 to a 14 there's a lot of growth, and the sleeves on me (size 14) would appear longer and wider at the hem when compared with the pattern envelope model. So I narrowed  and shortened the sleeves (I made a test garment first to make sure).
---
EN: I used a very good quality Ponte Roma knit for the top. It is important to stabilize the neckline against stretching and the instructions will have you hand-stitch stay-tape along the neckline edges, front and back. The pattern instruction illustrations suggest the tape is sewn on the top side but I think the same effect is achieved if the tape is applied on the self-facing side, avoiding the sight of stitch indentation. Since my knit holds its shape well, I interfaced the facings with thin knit fusible instead, using the lengthwise grain of the interfacing along the neckline edges, thus preventing them from stretching; I didn't feel the need of adding the stay tape with this knit. The goal with this pattern is to get the front neckline to be straight and seamless while the back is shaped slightly as a "V" and top-stitched down (I used the coverstitch for this, after finishing the raw edges with a 3-thread overlock). I stitched the shoulder/sleeve and side seams/sleeve with a 4-thread overlock. The next photo shows  the shoulder seam detail where you can notice the coverstitched back neckline joining the turned in facing of the front neckline:

CONCLUSION: I couldn't be happier with this ensemble! It is beyond gorgeous in my opinion. As usual you can see more photos of me wearing it on Tany et La Mode (clicke here). Hope you guys like it!

Tany - this is gorgeous and as always your work is impeccable!

Outstanding workmanship as always! I like that the sides of the plaid don't match...it emphasizes the design of the skirt. Beautiful.

Bom trabalho.

I love what you did with this pattern---I would never have considered it without seeing the plaid! Would this skirt be too long for a short person (say, 1.524 meters tall)? What about making alterations to the pattern, like for a swayback? Thanks for considering these.

Mary K: Thank you! This pattern is drafted for a 1,68m stature so in my opinion it should be shortened in your case (I am 1.59m tall and you see the skirt is fairly long on me, specially on the sides); there are shortening/lengthening lines on the pattern so you can use them to take out some of the skirt's length and then adjust the side seams as a straight line again. The sway back adjustment on the top should be easily achievable because there is a center back seam; remember also that the top is made of knit fabric with some stretch, so you won't have to make extreme sway back adjustments. For mine I made a knit muslin to check the overall fit, specially the sleeves (as I explained in the post); I didn't feel the need to alter it otherwise and I usually make a small sway back adjustment to most patterns.
Happy sewing!
