Lojas de tecidos no Porto – Fabric stores in Porto

Hi sewing Friends, I haven't been writing much but that's because I've been busy lately dealing with some private matters. At this point I'm still hand stitching the bias tubes to the blouse so nothing new to tell about that; it's a time consuming process because it involves a lot of hand sewing, as you all know. Today I plan to finish all the bias tubing appliqué and tackle the side and shoulder seams.

In the meanwhile, I went exploring Porto (downtown) and its fabric stores on Saturday morning and I'm in awe, as much for the variety as for the quality of the fabrics found there. I plan to get back soon and explore some more fabric stores, this time I only visited a few of the best recommended fabric stores. If you ever visit Porto, don't miss Clerigos street (Rua dos Clerigos), Loios square (Largo dos Loios) and Pacos Manuel Street (Rua Pacos Manuel) for fabric hunting.
Visitei as seguintes lojas:
I visited the following fabric stores:

Cadena (tecidos exclusivos para Alta Costura) (Couture exclusive fabrics)
Rua dos Clérigos, 29
4050-205 Porto
Tel. (+351) 222037939
Website: http://www.cadenamujer.com/

I'm definitely in love with this little fabric store and its fabrics! A "must visit" place if you intend to sew something special! No black organza available at the moment but a large selection of wonderful fabrics on display!

J. Marques
Largo dos Lóios, 83
Apart. 4396
4007-001 Porto
Tel. (+351) 222014168

At J. Marques I found a provider for silk organza at very competitive prices. Unfortunately there was no black silk organza available at the moment but they do run mail orders.

Cunha Rodrigues
Rua Paços Manuel, 30
4000-381 Porto
Tel. (+351) 222000173
Website: http://www.cunharodrigues.pt/

Here you can find the best designer fabrics ever (Elegance, Valentino, Emanuel Ungaro and Carnet). It was the only place where the black silk organza that I so desperately needed was readily available. The store is great, a sewing heaven for me but the fabrics are very expensive!

E aqui têm a meu pequeno espólio resultante desta visita exploratória à baixa do Porto:
Here's my small loot, resulting from this exploratory visit to Porto downtown:
Above there's the silk organza from Cunha Rodrigues and bellow there's a cotton print (97%cotton 3%elastan) from Cadena; there was only 1.10m left on the bolt and I brought it with me hoping it’s enough for a nice sleeveless summer dress!

The silk organza is so fine and high quality that I'm having second thoughts about the intended use for it; instead of using it to underline a pair of shorts I might thing of a better purpose for it, like ruffled cuffs on a blouse/jacket or even silk organza ties like this awesome jacket made by Carolyn!
Fiquem bem!
Be well!

Hope you're having a relaxing weekend after your crazy week! I hope you are feeling better, too.
Hugs from Paris where it's still raining! Ah well, it only means more time at the sewing machine ;)

Some PACC members here in the US sell Cadena fabric to their custom clients. It is well known even here! Lucky you!

Oh gosh, I spent 4 months in Porto in 1990 and never found a fabric shop. I obviously didn't know where to look (my main shopping companion/ guide liked handbags and leather goods if I remember correctly). If I ever return to Porto I'll follow your advice.
Many thanks
Juliet
