Segredos do Corte e da confecção – Secrets for Cutting and Dressmaking

Today I will show you another item from my sewing library, the "Secrets from Cutting and Dressmaking" Encyclopedia (original title: "Methode de Coupe Feminin"), Portuguese Edition by EDICLUBE and sponsored by several entities like ESMOD (International School of Fashion) and ISEM (Fashion Business School).
This is a set of three volumes (Woman I, Woman II and Toddlers/Accessories); it also contains a volume called "Fashion History".

This encyclopedia is filled with useful information and the main scope is on patternmaking using standard measures, although instructions for the use of personal measures are also provided. The construction techniques are organized through different sheets, each one covering a specific technique. These sheets can be consulted individually or by following a specific garment construction exercise; several exercises are provided in the end of each chapter. Besides the toddlers’ section, the last volume covers a lot of different subjects like accessories, fabrics and fabric care, fashion design, fashion show organization, etc.

In this post I will try to point out some of what I consider being the most interesting subjects covered in this encyclopedia.

The Introduction is a gem by itself; there are specific instructions on how to make your own pressing ham and (this part I find the most interesting), a pattern and instructions on how to make a fitting arm to attach to the dressform:
There is also a section dedicated to the subject of preparing the dressform to the best fit using cotton tape to mark all the main line guides:
This is an example of an instruction sheet; information is clear but not detailed; emphasis is on the construction order and correct placement of the pieces all together.
There is a chapter on each type of garment (skirts, blouses/tops, dresses, tailored jackets, coats and trousers); at the end of each chapter there are a few exercises on specific garments, from the sketch to the finished garment, going through the making of the pattern, the construction and the finishing details.
This is an example where the correct shape for the armscye is illustrated; this shape is asymmetrical, the front curve is more deeply pronounced and the "U" shape is slightly leaning back, so it follows the arm natural resting posture (sorry about the blurriness of some pictures but they were taken without the flash). The sleeve pattern also follows this approach.
This is a pattern where you can find an interesting sleeve design:
These are pictures from the fashion shows section:
Finally, images from the book "Fashion History", where you can see some Balenciaga's famous gowns:

Oh, I love the illustration of the armscye - it seems to be more accurate than anything else I've seen in books. What a great resource to have at your fingertips!

Hi Tany,
These books look very precious. I would like to buy the English edition. Do you happen to know if there is such a thing? I found something similar on the ESMOD link you listed but I don't believe the ESMOD books are the same as yours.
Thanks,
Anna

Anna: I tried to find an English edition because Evenstar also asked for it, but with no success... These books are wonderful and I'm sorry that there's isn't an English edition (that I know of).
