I'm still finishing the pockets for the trench coat and I though I could show you my Vogue Patterns collection in the meanwhile. I've been buying some Vogue patterns each time there is a sale on their site.

I feel very curious about American Pattern companies' patterns and I'm willing to try one of their patterns soon. As I said before I'm used to BWOF patterns mostly; I don't have to make major alterations on them and they really work for me. Patrones magazine is also a favorite because it features really trendy models and some good RTW models too. It's a Spanish magazine (there is no English edition) and the instructions are really summarized and short. I would advise its models to experienced sewers unless the model is a really simple one.

When I first started browsing the Internet looking for sewing resources I found out an entirely new world out there, lots of new alternatives regarding patterns for sewing. There are several pattern companies in Europe and the States that I didn't know about until some time ago.

On a next post I will discuss some of these pattern companies; I believe most of the Portuguese women don't know about them.

Before I go on I would like to explain to you what I look for in a pattern, what makes me buy it; sometimes it's not the preview of the finished garment that drives me but a single detail or a possibility: a particular collar, a different style line, a neckline… Most of the times I see beyond the model's picture and I imagine it with other fabric, with slight or severe modifications. I often buy patterns only to study them because they intrigue me.

So, for starters I got this Donna Karan Suit; I remember Ann Smith making this jacket and since then I had to get this pattern for myself, even if I wasn't going to sew it (but maybe I will!). Some of you may have seen this suit on the movie "The Devil wears Prada".
The last photo isn't clear so this one is taken from the Vogue Patterns site:
Casacos: Devem reconhecer o modelo do meio do meu post “Estou a pensar vermelho”.
Coats: you should recognize the one in the middle from my post "I'm thinking red". I intend to use this pattern to knock off that Armani coat from the 2005 F/W collection. My opinion about this pattern is that Vogue didn't succeed completely with the collar design; I believe the collar is different on the original. Here the challenge would be making it more close to the original. I also remember Ann's and Erica's versions of this coat.
Dresses: the first one is well known to the U.S. readers; I remember seeing Kaybee's, Erica's, Villain's and TwistedAngel's fantastic versions. This is a classical dress and a good challenge too. The other model is a night gown (I will attend to a wedding ceremony next July and this dress is a good candidate for that occasion).
Suits: I can't resist to a simple jacket/dress suit! I remember seeing Summerset's version for the one on the right and it has been on my mind ever since!
Finally there are blouses and tops; I find these patterns really cute and original, with lots of different possibilities:
As for the newly released models, the ones I find most interesting are the Vintage Vogues. Celina asked me on a previous post if I will ever make a vintage garment from my vintage pattern books and my answer is yes, that's something I'm willing to try someday! I've been getting lots of inspiration:

Summerset's American Beauty

Shannon's vintage SWAP

Lisa's recent pattern acquisitions

Marji's new SWAP vintage dress

Be well and Happy Sewing everyone!
Fiquem bem e boas costuras para todas!

Os Bolsos - The pockets

Today I made one pocket; there are three more to make and I still have to stitch them in place.

I didn't follow the magazine's instructions to do this, just good judgement. In the next picture you can see one of the pocket flaps (buttons are placed there so you can see the global effect):
I opted for machine buttonholes because this fabric is very thin:
Now for the pockets: note that I cut the fabric and the lining in different ways and also that I'll be thread tracing the darts on the lining pieces (I don't need to thread trace the outlines on the lining):
After stitching the darts on both fabric and lining pieces, I press them downwards:
In the next two photos you can see how I join the two pieces (lining and fabric), right sides together; red lines indicates where I'll be stitching (I leave a small opening in the middle so I can turn the pocket to the right side later):

SAs are pressed towards the fabric piece and trimmed so they meet the upper pocket outline:
Both pieces are joined together so the fold is placed exactly on the upper pocket outline:

I stitched all around it and trimmed SAs, as you can see:
Now the pocket can be turned to the right side using the little opening:

I basted the pocket, favouring the fabric side on the edges and pressed on the wrong side; I also did a topstitching line that closes the little opening on the wrong side. The pocket is ready to be stitched to the garment!
Até à próxima!
See you soon!

As presilhas do cinto - Belt loops

To make the belt loops I joined the longer sides of the small fabric rectangles (see the magazine's instructions), right sides together and stitched along the longer seam line. To press the seam open I use a wooden spoon (any wood stick thin enough to fit inside the loop will do). I prefer to put the seam on the back of the belt loop, so I centred this seam (the belt loop is on the wrong side) and I stitched along one of the two opened seams. I clipped SAs and turned the belt loop to the right side. The other end is zigzagged and the belt loop is topstitched 3mm from the edges. This is the result:
You can see the inside on the bottom belt loops (with the center seam) and on top you see one of the buttonholes marked with black thread. Note that I opted for an ivory topstitching instead of the darker topstitching on the magazine; this is a matter of personal choice and has to do with the fabric being so thin and transparent; If I was dealing with another fabric my choice could have been different.

This is the finished buttonhole; I left it uncut because these buttonholes are merely decorative.
Don't forget to reinforce the seams if you are using a sheer fabric like this (If I stitched this seams to the fabric and lining together this wouldn't be necessary, but I want the inside to be as neat as possible so I'm avoiding visible seams on the inside). The belt loop is pinned in place facing down with the wrong side on top (the center seam is visible and the buttonhole is pointing down). After stitching and backstitching, I turn it up and topstitch 3mm away from the seam. For last I sew the button in place. You can see in the next picture that I reinforced the spot where the button is stitched too (better safe than sorry). You see also that the upper seam line is not reinforced but that is the topstitching.
Aqui está a presilha depois de aplicada:
Here is the finished belt loop:
Fiquem bem!Summerset asked for a step-by-step tutorial on those special seams I came up with. I can do that when I stitch the CB seam but I still have to finish the other belt loops and the front pockets before I move to the vertical seams. Be well!

As costuras depois de lavadas – Seams after being washed

As fotos ilustram a sequência do processo:
Marita wanted to know if I was going to tack these seams; she worries they might not stay flat after washing. She also wonders how these seams will behave when pressed after washing. Since I was left wondering the same, I decided to make a test right away; I washed my swatch and rinsed it gently with a towel; then I used the iron to press it and dry it completely. Next pictures are a sequence illustrating the procedure:

Depois deste teste fico mais descansada!
Now I can rest my mind!

Costuras: mais testes – Seams: more tests

My last tests weren't satisfactory or conclusive. What is the best seam finish for this trench? This problem kept hitting me over and over again and, inspired by some of the comments on my last post, I came up with two more possibilities.

First of all, I need some lining bias stripes:

Now, I will show you the results from two more tests:

Flat fell seam (just like jeans seams), dealing with the fabric/lining as one

Lado do direito: Right side:
Lado do avesso: Wrong side:
I was not happy with this result either. The seam is too bulky; the fact that I'm dealing with two layers of fabric instead of one makes a big difference; besides, the resulting seam is too stiff, not flexible at all, and this doesn't go well with this fabric. Just scratch this option.

Seam covered with a single lining bias tape (I've never seen this done before so I don't know how to name this seam finish), both fabric and lining are treated as one; after the seam is stitched, the SAs are pressed open and trimmed and a lining bias stripe is sewn to the SAs on each side, covering them completely.

Lado do direito: Right side:
Lado do avesso: Wrong side:
For now I like this seam finish. It's a flexible seam, it looks nice and the ivory side doesn't show on the wrong side. Also there is no see-through on the right side. Here is another view of this seam so you can understand how it is done:
And now, how shall we name this seam finish?

Testes com costuras – Testing seams

Aqui está o resultado dos meus testes:
Here are the tests' results:

1 – Costuras normais no tecido e no forro: Regular seams on the fabric and lining:

a)lado do direito: right side:
b) lado do avesso: wrong side:
I hope you can see this; the wrong side is neat but on the right side you can see the SAs through the fabric. This is a slight see throw but I'm not pleased at all.

a)lado do direito: right side:
b)lado do avesso: wrong side:
Here you can see that the right side is fine (no see through because the lining shields the SAs) but I'm not sure if I like the wrong side… That ivory stripe… It would be nicer if I was using silk organza though. I'm just not sure about this.

Now for the million dollars question: Will this seam method work on rounded seams? I'm not sure if you know this but these raglan sleeves are divided in two pieces, there is an extra seam from the base of the neck, through the shoulder and top of the arm, ending on the wrist. This seam must be pressed flat open and it should be smooth and with no puckers on the right side.

Teste final (costura arredondada): Final test (rounded seam):

a)Lado do direito: Right side:
b)Lado do avesso: Wrong side
Opiniões serão sempre bem-vindas!
Your opinion is always welcome!

Alinhavar as marcações na gabardina –Thread tracing the trench coat

There isn't much left to say about thread tracing if you have been following my work; this process is time consuming if you are dealing with a pattern with lots of pieces, just like this one (I finished thread tracing and interfacing today's morning), but it gives me the chance to think through all the construction steps and all the sewing techniques for this model.
To make the threaded lines more visible I used black thread and sometimes red thread if there is a special seam or line that I want to highlight for some reason.

I also improved my thread tracing method; please observe the corners where two seams meet:
I leave a small loose end after crossing the corner so it will be easier to pull the threads when the seam is machine stitched.

Because this fabric is slightly "see-through", I've opted for a skin colored lining instead of the white lining; you can see the contrast between the fabric and the lining color in the next picture:
The stitching lines for the pockets and the belt carriers need to be reinforced, because this fabric is very thin and I want to prevent ripping under stress. To reinforce these stitching lines I'm using thin on grain stripes of white silk organza (I have a little piece in my stash to use in this kind of situations). Some of these lines are thread traced together with the organza stripes, as you can see next:
As I said before, this time consuming procedure gives me the chance of thinking through many possibilities on how to do things the best way. In this case I'm not following BWOF's instructions because they don't mention any lining procedure, so I must think ahead and establish my own course of action. My main concern here is the lining; it's not as straight forward as It may seem in this case, mostly because of the gathered skirt and also because the fashion fabric is a little see-through. I've put aside the synthetic organza lining now, I don't want to regret using it later (one ripped blouse is enough).

One of my first thoughts for this trench coat was making a one-step lining/underlining, which is a technique that would produce neat bounded seams inside. See this PR Sewing Tip: Underlining and Seam Finish in one. I could follow this procedure on all vertical seams and sleeve seams; the armscye seams would be done normally and then bounded with some bias tape made of lining; the skirt would be stitched to the trench's body and for last the collar and the buttoned closure would be attached, concealing both trench and lining SAs. The details like pockets and belt carriers would have to be made before all this, of course. I think this method would be perfect if I was using silk organza for the underlining, because it would meld well to the fabric's color.

Another option is making the lining and the trench coat separately (minus the skirt) and join them when attaching the collar and the buttoned closure. The gathered skirt would be stitched to the trench's body and SAs should be pressed upwards and topstitched; the lining could be handstitched to this seam, concealing it.

A saia é outro ponto a resolver.
The gathered skirt is another problem to solve. Should it be lined or unlined? If lined, join both lining and fabric and treat them as one when making the gathers or just make a less gathered lining skirt and the join it with the trench's skirt? Make a free-hanging lining skirt or conceal the lining inside the trench's hem? These are questions that will be answered after running a few tests.

I would like to thank those of you who shared my concerns and helped me thinking this through. Thank you for taking the time to share your sewing tips and knowledge with me.

Next I will show you my tests to determine which seam method is better for this particular case. Until then, have a Happy Easter everybody!
