As costuras depois de lavadas – Seams after being washed

As fotos ilustram a sequência do processo:
Marita wanted to know if I was going to tack these seams; she worries they might not stay flat after washing. She also wonders how these seams will behave when pressed after washing. Since I was left wondering the same, I decided to make a test right away; I washed my swatch and rinsed it gently with a towel; then I used the iron to press it and dry it completely. Next pictures are a sequence illustrating the procedure:

Depois deste teste fico mais descansada!
Now I can rest my mind!

Costuras: mais testes – Seams: more tests

My last tests weren't satisfactory or conclusive. What is the best seam finish for this trench? This problem kept hitting me over and over again and, inspired by some of the comments on my last post, I came up with two more possibilities.

First of all, I need some lining bias stripes:

Now, I will show you the results from two more tests:

Flat fell seam (just like jeans seams), dealing with the fabric/lining as one

Lado do direito: Right side:
Lado do avesso: Wrong side:
I was not happy with this result either. The seam is too bulky; the fact that I'm dealing with two layers of fabric instead of one makes a big difference; besides, the resulting seam is too stiff, not flexible at all, and this doesn't go well with this fabric. Just scratch this option.

Seam covered with a single lining bias tape (I've never seen this done before so I don't know how to name this seam finish), both fabric and lining are treated as one; after the seam is stitched, the SAs are pressed open and trimmed and a lining bias stripe is sewn to the SAs on each side, covering them completely.

Lado do direito: Right side:
Lado do avesso: Wrong side:
For now I like this seam finish. It's a flexible seam, it looks nice and the ivory side doesn't show on the wrong side. Also there is no see-through on the right side. Here is another view of this seam so you can understand how it is done:
And now, how shall we name this seam finish?

Testes com costuras – Testing seams

Aqui está o resultado dos meus testes:
Here are the tests' results:

1 – Costuras normais no tecido e no forro: Regular seams on the fabric and lining:

a)lado do direito: right side:
b) lado do avesso: wrong side:
I hope you can see this; the wrong side is neat but on the right side you can see the SAs through the fabric. This is a slight see throw but I'm not pleased at all.

a)lado do direito: right side:
b)lado do avesso: wrong side:
Here you can see that the right side is fine (no see through because the lining shields the SAs) but I'm not sure if I like the wrong side… That ivory stripe… It would be nicer if I was using silk organza though. I'm just not sure about this.

Now for the million dollars question: Will this seam method work on rounded seams? I'm not sure if you know this but these raglan sleeves are divided in two pieces, there is an extra seam from the base of the neck, through the shoulder and top of the arm, ending on the wrist. This seam must be pressed flat open and it should be smooth and with no puckers on the right side.

Teste final (costura arredondada): Final test (rounded seam):

a)Lado do direito: Right side:
b)Lado do avesso: Wrong side
Opiniões serão sempre bem-vindas!
Your opinion is always welcome!

Alinhavar as marcações na gabardina –Thread tracing the trench coat

There isn't much left to say about thread tracing if you have been following my work; this process is time consuming if you are dealing with a pattern with lots of pieces, just like this one (I finished thread tracing and interfacing today's morning), but it gives me the chance to think through all the construction steps and all the sewing techniques for this model.
To make the threaded lines more visible I used black thread and sometimes red thread if there is a special seam or line that I want to highlight for some reason.

I also improved my thread tracing method; please observe the corners where two seams meet:
I leave a small loose end after crossing the corner so it will be easier to pull the threads when the seam is machine stitched.

Because this fabric is slightly "see-through", I've opted for a skin colored lining instead of the white lining; you can see the contrast between the fabric and the lining color in the next picture:
The stitching lines for the pockets and the belt carriers need to be reinforced, because this fabric is very thin and I want to prevent ripping under stress. To reinforce these stitching lines I'm using thin on grain stripes of white silk organza (I have a little piece in my stash to use in this kind of situations). Some of these lines are thread traced together with the organza stripes, as you can see next:
As I said before, this time consuming procedure gives me the chance of thinking through many possibilities on how to do things the best way. In this case I'm not following BWOF's instructions because they don't mention any lining procedure, so I must think ahead and establish my own course of action. My main concern here is the lining; it's not as straight forward as It may seem in this case, mostly because of the gathered skirt and also because the fashion fabric is a little see-through. I've put aside the synthetic organza lining now, I don't want to regret using it later (one ripped blouse is enough).

One of my first thoughts for this trench coat was making a one-step lining/underlining, which is a technique that would produce neat bounded seams inside. See this PR Sewing Tip: Underlining and Seam Finish in one. I could follow this procedure on all vertical seams and sleeve seams; the armscye seams would be done normally and then bounded with some bias tape made of lining; the skirt would be stitched to the trench's body and for last the collar and the buttoned closure would be attached, concealing both trench and lining SAs. The details like pockets and belt carriers would have to be made before all this, of course. I think this method would be perfect if I was using silk organza for the underlining, because it would meld well to the fabric's color.

Another option is making the lining and the trench coat separately (minus the skirt) and join them when attaching the collar and the buttoned closure. The gathered skirt would be stitched to the trench's body and SAs should be pressed upwards and topstitched; the lining could be handstitched to this seam, concealing it.

A saia é outro ponto a resolver.
The gathered skirt is another problem to solve. Should it be lined or unlined? If lined, join both lining and fabric and treat them as one when making the gathers or just make a less gathered lining skirt and the join it with the trench's skirt? Make a free-hanging lining skirt or conceal the lining inside the trench's hem? These are questions that will be answered after running a few tests.

I would like to thank those of you who shared my concerns and helped me thinking this through. Thank you for taking the time to share your sewing tips and knowledge with me.

Next I will show you my tests to determine which seam method is better for this particular case. Until then, have a Happy Easter everybody!

While I'm thread tracing all the pieces for the trench coat (it's a time consuming procedure), I decided to show you the latest additions to my sewing library:
I don't know about you, but I'm completely addicted to sewing books, especially vintage sewing books! I paid an obscene amount for these three books but it was worth it! In the old days more attention was given to detail on dressmaking techniques. These books mirror this thoroughness very well.

The book "Clothing Construction" (1974, second edition) by Evelyn A. Mansfield & Ethel L. Lucas is my favorite. This is the Preface's first sentence: "The aim of this book is to explain dressmaking procedures to clothing construction students as clearly as a teacher might explain them by firsthand demonstration to an individual student." This book is divided into seventeen chapters:

1 – Sewing Equipment - Equipamento de costura
2 – Stitching (machine and hand stitching) – Coser (à mão e à máquina)
3 – Patterns (lots of fitting information) – Moldes (muita informação sobre ajustes)
4 – Fabric and layout – Tecidos e planos de corte
5 – Fitting (assembling a garment for fitting) – A prova (como preparar para a prova)
6 – Seams (I love this chapter!) – Costuras (Adoro este capítulo!)
7 – Pressing – Assentar a ferro
8 – Fullness - Volume
9 – Bias - Viés
10 – Fastenings - Fechos
11 – Concealed Closures (very interesting!) – Fechos escondidos (muito interessante!)
12 – Pockets - Bolsos
13 – Necklines – Decotes
14 – Sleeves - Mangas
15 – Waistlines - Cintura

This book features black & white pictures illustrating clearly and well all the sewing techniques. In my opinion this is a must have book for everyone who wants to improve sewing techniques and procedures.

The book "Modern Pattern Design" (1942, reprinted in 1945) by Harriet Pepin is another wonderful resource book focusing on pattern making. Although I could read this book online at http://vintagesewing.info/1940s.html#42mpd, I couldn't resist buying an original to my book collection. If you visit the site http://vintagesewing.info/, make sure you don't miss lots of other vintage sewing books available online. This site is a wonderful resource for vintage sewing techniques; the patternmaking techniques are the same in our days, although style and trends may vary.

Glued to the back cover inside, I found this envelope which contains some annotations, personal measurements and a few fabric swatches. There is no doubt that this book was used by a dressmaker in the past!A minha última aquisição (recebi-a ontem) é o livro "Dress Design, Draping and Flat Pattern Making" (1948), de Marion S. Hillhouse e Evelyn Mansfield.
My last acquisition (I received it yesterday) is the book "Dress Design, Draping and Flat Pattern Making" (1948), by Marion S. Hillhouse & Evelyn Mansfield. When I first saw this book I though "well, just another vintage patternmaking book…" but after turning a few pages I realised this is much more than a patternmaking tutorial. The chapter about Dress forms by itself is worth its weight in gold: it teaches you how to make a "French lining" (a cotton to fill fabric cover which follows the measurements of the individual with absolute precision) and how to pad your commercial dressform and then cover it with this shell. There are also many interesting draping examples, loads of information on fitting and lots of inspiration. This book is divided into seven chapters:

1 – The Dressform - O manequim
2 – Basic Blouses - Blusas Básicas
3 – Basic Skirts – Saias Básicas
4 – Sleeves - Mangas
5 – Fitting - Ajustes
6 – Collars and Necklines - Decotes e golas
7 – Sources of Inspiration in Design – Fontes de inspiração em Design

Both methods (flat patternmaking and draping) are explained and well illustrated; there are many practical examples illustrating all the procedures. Illustrations are based on line drawings but I find them accurate and very clear.

Espero que estas informações vos sejam úteis!
I hope you find these book reviews useful!

Hoje fui às compras… - Today I went shopping…

… E aqui têm o que comprei:
… And here's the loot:
I bought ivory, golden brown and white thread and also thin black thread for thread tracing; you can see the golden organza and the white lining on the left(I'm still not sure which one I prefer to use for the lining); on the right there's the thin knit fusible interfacing.

I thought of two belt options: the regular buckled belt as the original model shows (see the buckle with the price label still on in the above photo) and an elastic belt, covered with fashion fabric (it will be wrinkled) and secured with this (I don't know the English name for it) – see the inside hook/eye and the wide elastic tape:
Here are the covered buttons:
Finally there's also the organza bias tape to make french seams hong-kong seams if I decide to use the golden organza for the lining; the golden organza is transparent so you can see the seams inside and raw edges are not an option!
Fiquem bem!
The pattern is traced and cut and tomorrow I plan to cut the fabric and start interfacing and thread tracing all the pieces using black thread. Be well!

A gabardina: Apresentação e tecido escolhido - The trenchcoat: Presentation and fabric

Well, it's final; the trenchcoat will be my next sewing project. I'm still waiting for my order to arrive in the mail but now this trench has moved up in my project queue and the organza blouse will be second to it. Image is courtesy of Burdamode.com.
Descrição do modelo (Segundo a revista):
Model description (from the magazine):

Tamanhos Burda 36 – 44. (Gabardina: *** Dificuldade intermédia a difícil – costureiras experientes)
The bodice is relaxed and sporty with the typical epaulettes, sleeve straps, patch pockets and collar; the skirt sports feminine gathers and oversized pockets. This spring variation on the trenchcoat is very trendy indeed!
Burda sizes 36 – 44. (Trench: *** Intermediate difficult - more advanced)

Material necessário (segundo a revista):
Notions needed (according to the magazine):

-tecido: 2,50m (1,6m largura);
-fabric: 2,50m (1,6m wide);
-retalho de forro (50x50cm);
- 50x50cm piece of lining for the inside pockets;
-entretela Vieseline G785;
-interfacing: Vieseline G785;
-9 botões grandes (forrados com tecido);
-9 large buttons (covered with fashion fabric);
-15 botões pequenos (forrados com tecido);
-15 small buttons (covered with fashion fabric);
- fivela para cinto de 5cm de largura.
- 5cm wide buckle for the belt.

This trench is not to be lined, and that I find annoying; I prefer to line all my garments if I can but this one is a challenge because of the gathered skirt (that won't be lined). The first wild idea that came into my mind was using that synthetic golden organza I bough a little while ago but I'll give this idea some more thought before I decide if I even make a lining and with what material (regular lining fabric would also do the trick and it's not transparent). If I don't line this garment I'll have to use the hong-kong seam finish technique so that the interior is neat too.
As for the interfacing, I'll use some more of that thin knit fusible interfacing, only this time it will be white.

I bought this ivory fabric locally from Feira dos Tecidos and it's a 65%polyester 35% rayon blend, very thin yet crisp and slightly transparent. It also features a certain shine and the wrinkled effect, similar to the original model.
I've already washed and dried this fabric (presetting the machine to a gentle cycle) and next I pressed it. The fabric kept all its characteristics including the wrinkled effect which, by the way, is perpendicular to the salvage instead of on grain (lengthwise). I draped the fabric on my body to see how it hangs and I was surprised to se that it hangs better on the crosswise grain! My instincts tell me to cut the fabric on the crosswise grain instead of the lengthwise so that the direction of the wrinkles is vertical and not horizontal on the pattern.

In the meanwhile I started to trace the pattern now; if you are thinking of doing this same model, pay close attention to the pattern because there are some lines that are traced for size 36 only; read the directions carefully so you can trace the buttonhole placement lines and the sleeve topstitching lines correctly for any other size. Also keep in mind that this same pattern is used by model 104 so pay attention to the pattern drawing for model 103 and trace all the lines for this model only.

Até breve!
See you soon!
