Retro-style neoprene bikini (Evie La Luve's Mimi bikini pattern and kit)

EN Summary: Up for reviewing today is Evie La Luve's latest pattern release, the Mimi bikini; I've made it using one of Evie La Luve's kits (pattern and kit both purchased from her Etsy shop). Keep reading the complete sewing review.

EN: The Mimi is a stunner piece of beachwear with a modern-retro feel and figure enhancing cut-outs that won my heart the first time I saw it. Along with the pattern, which contains fully illustrated instructions on how to sew the bikini, I also bought one of Evie's sewing kits (the "Blue Floral") containing 1 meter of 1.5 m wide scuba knit (less stretchy than 4-way lycra, it has some stretch mainly on the crosswise direction and a certain body to it), 1 m of swimwear lining, 8.5m of rubber swimwear elastic (0.9 mm wide) and 2 x 2.5 cm wide plastic bikini closures. I used most of the elastic but there's enough scuba and lining for another bikini. I found the kit a good value for the money since the materials are good quality. According to the included measurements table I was placed in between the S and M for the top and L-XL for the bottom part which I found odd. I cut the M for the top and the L for the bottom and it worked well with the scuba fabric; if using 4-way stretch lycra I could have cut the bottom at least one size smaller.
I started by cutting and laying out the bikini top (it is very important to cut the scuba following the lines of greatest stretch indicated in the pattern), trying to obtain a pleasing symmetry effect; all pieces except the straps get swimwear lining; I went ahead and machine basted the center front piece and the bottom bands to their lining counterparts because I know both layers would be treated as one and laid out all the pieces as I usually do for easy piecing:

EN: The construction went smoothly and I only deviated from the instructions on some minor details: for serging the elastic to the edges, I did what I'm used to, stretching the elastic slightly along the seam (take 5cm-2" elastic and stretch 5mm-1/4" as you serge). I used woolly nylon on the serger loopers and since I only have two cones and didn't wan't to re-thread my serger, instead of coverstitching the elastic (or using a twin needle), I top-stitched the elasticated edge with a medium size zigzag with my sewing machine, which works well just the same. I also top-stitched the vertical encased seams with a long straight stitch (4mm length). The final top looks very professionaly finished as you can see:
---

EN: The bottoms are also very neat with both crotch seams enclosed (using the "Burrito method", illustrated in the pattern instructions). Below you can see the rubber elastic serged on the round to a leg opening. It takes some practice to achieve this result; the elastic is fed to the serger on top of the wrong side of the bikini (with the lining basted in place), very close to the edge and must be slightly stretched evenly as you serge. Whenever there's a cross-seam, the serged edge must be gently pulled from behind to help feed through the added bulk; when the elastics start to overlap, I stop, raise and lower the presser fot to release some tension, continue serging for 1/2" and come out diagonally. The elastic ends are also trimmed diagonally to reduce bulk.

EN: After turning the elasticated edge to the inside, top-stitching with a zigzag must be done from the wrong side while stretching and pulling the fabric to the left underneath the elastic:
---
EN: Here's a close-up of the resulting edge:

PT: Aqui têm o detalhe da orla resultante:
EN: I received a free batch of new labels from https://www.dutchlabelshop.com/ for reviewing and I couldn't be happier with them! This kind of woven labels doesn't have folds which makes them ideal to be tacked in a seam like this:

EN: Here's the side view on my non-lingerie friendly dressform; gorgeous, don't you guys agree? The Mimi gets my top rating!
Thank you all for reading!

I love your suit so much that I just bought the pattern to make a suit for my daughter as I am not bikini age anymore, nor do I have the figure anymore. I saw versions by a couple of other bloggers and love them all.
