Introducing myself to Bra-making: learning resources and suppliers – Introdução à confeção de soutiens: como aprender e onde comprar os aviamentos

EN Summary: While I’m slowly progressing on my Marfy coat, there’s another sewing related topic that has been on my mind lately: lingerie making in general and bra making in particular. For me it’s hard to find a high quality well fitted bra without spending a considerable amount of money (I mean a stylish bra made with good quality materials and including a personalized fitting session); making a bra is something I’m willing to try because I hear it’s not that hard once you know what to do and have all the materials available. It is said that once you make your first bra, you can make any bra, so how difficult can it be? Keep reading the full article, if this is a matter of interest to you.

EN: For making bras, all you need is a sewing machine with a straight and a zigzag stitch, the right notions and the knowledge. While bra making has been a topic of crescent interest within the home sewing community in many countries, here in Portugal there’s virtually nothing (“nada”) on the subject; while I know we have a good textile industry and we produce the materials used in bra making, they are not being sold to the public in general, only to the industry. There are no patterns, no specialized stores, no workshops on the topic, no one in Portugal is blogging about it; so I did the usual: I resourced what I could online in English and found out quite a bit of useful information. This article will address the learning resources in particular.
---
EN: Where to learn the basics of bra making when you don’t have access to live classes and/or specialized instruction in your area? The best next thing is subscribing to video classes available online where you can learn by watching the lessons at your own pace and can also interact with the teacher and other students. There are several e-learning platforms with a wide offer in many craft subjects; after doing my own research I opted for Craftsy, which hosts several classes by Beverly Johnson, also known as the “Fairy Bra Mother”,  owner of Bra-Makers Supply in Ontario, Canada. I started by enrolling in her beginner’s class “Sewing Bras – Construction and Fit” and I got totally hooked, I had to get her other more advanced classes as soon as they went on sale. Note: I am not affiliate with Craftsy or any of the online resources that I'm listing.
---
EN: If you are not willing to spend the cash in bra-making classes, there are a few free resources that I dug out and perhaps they are a good place to start if you are interested but unsure about venturing into this specialized area in sewing. A good one is this Youtube video tutorial by Madalynne, showing how she makes her Simplicity 8229 bra pattern; On her blog www.madalynne.com you'll also find a few free patterns and lots of tips to start with.
---

Great roundup Tany. I just assumed you'd have better access to bra making supplies than we did in the US! The Beverly Johnson classes are incredible. I remember first learning about bra sewing from Sigrid's blog five and ten years ago! There are so many good resources out there now.

Tany! Tambem tenho andado a matutar e investigar... vai partilhando, este tema interessa!

Have you looked at the Sewing Chest? http://sewingchest.co.uk/ They have quite a wide range of findings, elastics, underwires and so on. Not so much fabric. They ship from the UK but I don't know what their charge to Portugal would be. I found them very prompt when I ordered from them. I'm not affiliated, just a customer. I shall watch how you go with interest, as I'm just starting too. Finding which are the right wires is by far the hardest thing. It might be easy if one could buy underwired bras that really fit, and take it from there, but my small but in-between size seems to be a problem! Anne

Anne: Yes I've looked, but since I haven't ordered anything from them yet, I didn't include them in this post. I will certainly consider them in the future. Thank you for coming forward!
I will post some updates on my bra making journey soon, since I've just completed my first trial bra. It needs a couple of adjustments but I think it looks great for a first attempt!

This will be fun to follow along. I have two bra making Craftsy classes but haven't attempted to sew one myself.

Thank you for mentioning my blog posts Tany. I do think I was one of the first ones to blog about bra sewing too. My tutorials are quite old now and so many others have done such a great job in writing about bra sewing. I bought a course by Beverly Johnson too and she is a great teacher.

You're most welcome, Sigrid. Your sewing bra abilities have always amazed me.

I'm always interested in reading about bra making, but haven't taken the plunge (ha!) yet. I'm sure you will create some amazing things. As well as Sigrid two other blogs that I've found that cover some amazing makes are Very Purple Person and Bloom's Fabric Obsession, both worth a look for some inspiration.
