February BurdaStyle favorites – Modelos favoritos da BurdaStyle de Fevereiro

Yesterday I bought both the February BurdaStyle and the current issue of Burda Tricot; I was pleasantly surprised by the content of these magazines, and today decided to share my favorites from the BurdaStyle issue (I also tried to find pictures of the models featured in Burda Tricot but I couldn’t find a complete list of model pictures from which I could chose my favorites; I might just take a few shots of the magazine myself and write a separate favorite list later).
 ---

This is my favorite model (there’s also a top version below); I went fabric shopping today and found some boucle fabric that I find suitable to make the dress:
---

There are also a few more dresses that I think have potential:
---

I like this outfit very much; I’d sew it using the same fabric/color choices:
---

This top also caught my eye; the style lines are very trendy, IMO:
---

There are more patterns that I could use, but these were the ones that appealed the most to me at a first glance. What about you, do you have any favorites?
---

The coat issue – A minha cena com casacos

Those of you who follow Couture Et Tricot for a long time, will most certainly guess the answer to the question “what’s my favorite type of wardrobe item?”. Yes, the answer is The Coat; no matter how many coats I own already, I’m always wishing for more; there’s always “that color”, or “those style lines” or “that type of fabric”,… And I mean the coats made by me and the ones I purchased; I love coats, period.

We all know that making a coat is a labor intensive task with a lot going on: there’s the pre-treating of the fabric, the interfacings, the cutting, the markings, applying the interfacings, the collar/lapels, the pockets, vents, the lining,… A LOT. With my current time availability, if I was to start making a coat right now I’d be lucky to wear it next winter. Plus, spring is right around the corner now.

Yet, I dream of making a grey blanket coat… On my last fabric shopping trip I found a grey fabric that doesn’t ravel: some kind of double faced felted blend that is soft enough for an unstructured blanket coat yet has some body; one side of the fabric is anthracite and the other is a lighter shade of grey. I went ahead I bought a little more than 3yrd, planning on using it for making the perfect instant gratification coat (no lining, no facings, no major interfacing, and no finishing edges). When I got home I went through my Burda’s magazines and I found a pattern that would fit the bill: BurdaStyle 2012/10, model 103. Hopefully I’ll have some time to trace the pattern next weekend! Winter, don’t go away just yet!

Description: Short fully lined fur jacket with wide neckline and stand-up collar has ¾ raglan sleeves, one button closure and decorative trim around the neckline.

ETA: To see me wearing the jacket, click here.

Edit: Para me verem a usar a jaqueta, cliquem aqui.

Pattern used: BurdaStyle 1/2014, model 103 using the collar from model 104 (same pattern but longer length and standup collar); added an inverted pleat on the back and skipped the three hook/eye closure.

Details/Alterations: I had planned on making the jacket with the original collar but it turned out I had less fabric than needed so I had to improvise and decided to use the collar from pattern 104 which uses considerably less fabric. When I was laying down the pattern on the fabric I noted that I could make an inverted pleat on the back, which adds some fullness and a nice vintage vibe to the jacket.

Interfacing: Burda’s instructions say to fuse interfacing on the lining fabric around the neckline (obviously the fur cannot be pressed or fused). Besides doing this I also added some sew-in interfacing to the front facing, hemlines and inner collar.

Lining: I bagged the lining the industrial way instead of following Burda’s instructions to sew in the lining.

When the jacket was finished I noticed I only had one hook/eye closure; I also thought the jacket looked too plain; some garments benefit of a certain minimalism, but in this case I really felt like adding some more detailing. Since I was out of hooks&eyes, I decided to use a bamboo button (a gift from a dear friend) as closure; I needed to make a loop of some kind and then remembered of using this vintage trim that I had in my stash. I stitched it around the entire neckline and made a loop on the right end; I think it turned out nicely.

Gostei bastante do efeito final.

Conclusion: With a young toddler I take considerably more time to finish a project; this jacket was cut since right after NYE and I only finished it today… Along the way my mind was already set ahead on another project (I’ll tell you about it soon), and at a certain point I lost my enthusiasm with this jacket. It was also a messy project (those of you who already cut faux fur know exactly what I’m talking about). I was worried that my son would breathe all the faux fur hair that was scattered all over in the room. But well, it is finished, I cleaned the sewing room right after and I am very pleased with the end result. I'll probably wear this jacket very soon, so don't miss the updates on my personal style blog!

Finally I’m also showing you guys the dress that I finished on the 31th of December, using the same pattern as the Missoni-esque dress shown in the last post. A different fabric makes it look like a completely different dress, don’t you think? Pictures of me wearing the dress were published on my Personal Style blog, in case you missed it.

Houston, we have a finished sewing Project!

Houston, temos um projeto de costura terminado!

See more photos of me wearing the dress on my wardrobe blog.

Vejam fotos minhas a usar o vestido no meu blogue deestilo pessoal.

Pattern used: BurdaStyle 01/2014 model 122 (originally a top, turned it into a dress). I cut a 38.

Molde usado: BurdaStyle 01/2014 modelo 122 (o original é um top, mas transformei-o num vestido). Cortei o tamanho 38.

Fabric used: Missoni-esque chevron print knit (medium weight, it’s kind of a thin sweater knit)

Sewing instructions and changes made: there’s nothing to add to the sewing instructions, Burda has them illustrated and they are perfectly clear (this was the issue’s featured pattern with sewing course included). I added 12 inches to the length, turning it into a dress. The real challenge with this project was matching the patterns; look closely to the pictures bellow and let me know what you think!

Conclusion: Great pattern! I have to make the most of my time and since I’ve invested quite some into tracing this pattern, I think I’ll be making at least one more dress from it! See you next time!! (click here for today’s outfit pictures).

New SM and wishful sewing – Nova máquina de costura e vontade de costurar

A couple of months ago I decided on upgrading to a new sewing machine (it’s a nice way to get some sewing mojo back, right?) and my choice went to Pfaff, mainly based on the dealer proximity and positive reviews. I bought the Pfaff Ambition Essential, and so far I am very pleased (I did use it to finish up the leather sleeves coat, some mending and also to sew some costumes for the kindergarten’s Christmas play).

The key feature on this machine is the integrated IDT system; I’m able to say that it works wonders, I barely need pins/basting anymore to hold seams together while stitching.

And with all this “motivation”, am I planning to actually sew anything? You know how short of time I’ve been, but next week it’s holyday week and I’ll be dammed if I don’t make one or two garments! It has to be something simple and quick, and hopefully something that I’ll be willing to wear on New Year’s Eve (I’ll spend it at home with our family but I’d like to wear something nice for the occasion). Last time I had a major cleaning in the sewing studio I stored away most of my fabric stash, but I saved a few knits and also a nice piece of cream faux fur... I’m thinking of using these fabrics to make the following garments, both from the last issue of BurdaStyle (01/2014):

I think the asymmetric top can easily be turned into a dress and I have a chevron print knit that could work for this pattern. I’ll keep my motivation levels high and hopefully I’ll have something new to show you guys next week! Happy holyday sewing everybody!

In my mailbox today – Hoje na minha caixa de correio

Operation “Force Motivate myself to sew” is on!

A operação “Forçar-me Motivar-me a costurar” está em curso!

BurdaStyle 06/2011, model 115C – Black coat with leather sleeves

Description: Long overall straight coat, fully lined, is adjusted by french darts and has round bottom edges and a long slit at the center back. My version has inseam pockets instead of the original’s patch pockets and pleather sleeves. I used a very nice 100%wool tailoring fabric that I ordered from the UK. For the lining I used black satin with a red bias tape accent. See me wearing the coat here.

Podem ver-me a usar o casaco clicando aqui.

Original Model: June 2011 BurdaStyle, model 115C

Modelo original: BurdaStyle Junho 2011, modelo 115C
I started sewing this coat back in November 2011, if I’m not mistaken… It was almost finished (I had only to bag the lining and work on the finishing details) when my swing mojo has gone away inexplicably. A few days later I knew I was pregnant and during my entire pregnancy I had zero sewing mojo (unbelievable, right?). During the first few months after giving birth I literally had no time to even think about sewing; and during the months that followed, I had plenty of sewing mojo back, yet no time to sew. A couple of months ago I knew I had to finish this coat, the itching to sew was ever growing and took advantage of my son’s napping time during the afternoon in the weekends to be able to finally finish my coat… And up until now, it has been the only sewing done this year. Yesterday I took some time to photograph it and write a few words about it, at the expense of less sleeping time (and nowadays I do value my sleeping time a LOT!). Finding the original pattern that I used so I could refer to it was another adventure… Why on earth did I have to pick a summer issue to make a winter coat?!

As a long time has passed, I have no sewing details to share (I can say I used a mix of modern and vintage tailoring techniques on this coat), just a few quick detail shots after modeling the coat in my backyard:

The back slit detail:

Detalhes da abertura nas costas do casaco:

The lining bottom wearing ease fold goes above the slit in this case:

A few more details of the lining:

Detalhes do acabamento do forro:

Setting in the pleather sleeves was hell and they didn’t turn out as good as I am used to, but I thing they pass as average and are certainly better than the sleeves on the original coat that I was knocking off (a RTW coat that I saw at a well know retail shop). The coat also feels great on; I’m very pleased with the overall result. Here's a picture of the coat which inspired me:

I hope you like my “new” coat, and thank you all so much for keep visiting in spite of my very long hiatus. I’m not sure when I’ll be updating this blog again… I haven’t been sewing and even if I did, this type of posts is very time consuming. Chances are I’ll manage to write more about my sewing musings, books I’ve been acquiring, etc. than actual sewing projects on the making; I also think that taking a few quick outfit photos in the morning from time to time is manageable so I'll be trying to update my wardrobe blog as well. We’ll see how it goes from here, all I can promise is my best effort! Big hugs to you all!
