Quero uma bolsa Dublin! - I want a Dublin Bag!

Fiquei completamente siderada por esta bolsa! Chama-se “Dublin Bag” e o original é de Gerard Darel. O preço? Umas centenas de dólares… O bastante para me convencer a fazer o meu!

Depois de algumas pesquisas descobri vários blogs brasileiros cujas autoras tinham feito esta bolsa e, pelo menos a Jane (blog Crochet-by-Jane) publicou umas instruções que me pareceram bastante boas para conseguir copiá-la. Visitem a galeria de fotos dela para muitas fotos do passo-a-passo da construção, algumas fotos da bolsa original e as bolsas confeccionadas pela Jane). A dificuldade agora está em encontrar os materiais. Já vi no eBay os ímanes para o fecho (e talvez os arranje por cá numa retrosaria), mas as alças vão ser um pouco mais difíceis de encontrar (em último caso uso a técnica do Frankenstein e tiro as alças a uma bolsa barata).

I am completely overwhelmed by this bag! It’s called “The Dublin Bag” by Gerard Darel and its price (a few hundred dollars) was enough to convince me to try making my own Dublin bag!

After a few Google searches I found out about a few Brazilian blogs whose authors made knockoffs of this bag and at least Jane (Crochet-By-Jane blog) published a detailed how-to. Her photo gallery contains several photos of the original bag, along with detailed progress photos on the making of a Dublin bag knockoff. The only set back now is finding some of the bag making materials I need… I’ve already found the closure magnets on eBay (maybe I can find them locally too) but I suspect the bag handles will be a problem (as a last resource I will “Frankenstein” a pair of handles from an old or cheap bag).

Calças largas de xadrez Burda092008mod105A – BWOF082008mod105A: Masculine style plaid pants

Descrição: Calças de corte masculino têm cós com encaixe na anca com passadeiras, bolsos nas costuras laterais, um bolso avivado atrás e fecho com carcela.

A minha inspiração para estas calças (além dos vários modelos semelhantes vistos nas passerelles) veio de um modelo da Mango que me agradou bastante:

No entanto, quando as experimentei verifiquei que não me assentavam bem e então decidi fazer umas calças no mesmo estilo, mas à minha medida e ao meu gosto.

Não se esqueçam de reforçar com entretela o local da abertura do bolso antes de o costurar! Neste caso o bolso atravessa uma pinça, por isso cose-se e assenta-se a pinça a ferro antes de aplicar a tira de entretela:

Como viram fiz todos os acabamentos com a corta-e-cose e não me preocupei em forrar as calças para diminuir as engelhas; este tecido simplesmente não engelha! As fotos de mim com as calças foram tiradas depois de um dia sentada na secretária!

Conclusão: Acho que seria difícil encontrar umas calças que me ficassem tão bem como estas; o mérito não é meu, pois não modifiquei nada no molde; este modelo de calças da Burda simplesmente assenta-me que nem uma luva!

Bem, agora tenho de terminar a jaqueta de xadrez, o que vai levar algum tempo. Até à próxima!

The inspiration for these pants (besides the same style pants seen in several fashion shows) came from some RTW Mango pants that caught my eye immediately:

I went to the local Mango store and tried the pants on, only to discover that they didn’t fit right on me. Feeling glad I could sew, I decided then to make my own masculine plaid pants, hoping to achieve a better fit and a similar look.

If you make this pocket don’t forget to reinforce the opening place with interfacing! In this case the pocket crosses a dart and the dart is stitched and pressed (also very important) before fusing the interfacing on.

I did all the inside finishing with my serger and I didn’t bother lining these pants because this fabric is wrinkle free (Yay!). The pictures of me wearing the pants were taken after a day sitting at my desk in the office!

Conclusion: I think it would be difficult to get a better fit than this, for this style of pants. The merit isn’t mine because I didn’t do a single adjustment to the pattern; it fits like a glove right as is!

Now I must work on the plaid jacket; it will take some time until it's finished. See you next time!

Colar e brincos de pérolas – Pearl necklace and earrings

Há algum tempo meti na cabeça que queria um colar de pérolas; um colar de pérolas maiores do que o normal, só para ser diferente (não sei porquê mas agora lembrei-me da Lisa Simpson, hehehe). Andei à procura e deparei-me com a dificuldade de encontrar algo exactamente como tinha imaginado, principalmente em termos do tamanho das pérolas. No outro dia, reparei que na retrosaria do lado oposto da rua de onde trabalho tinham materiais para fazer bijutaria… E dei por mim a sair de lá com um saquinho de pérolas nacaradas grandes, algum material específico como o fecho, preguinhos de aço, ganchos para os brincos, etc. Depois foi só comprar um conjunto de alicates de precisão e no fim-de-semana passado resolvi por a minha habilidade de fazer bijutaria à prova. O resultado foi este. Espero que gostem, é um conjunto simples e conservador mas o tamanho das pérolas dá-lhe um ar diferente do usual!

Some time ago I became obsessed by owning a pearl necklace; not the ordinary pearl necklace but one made of slightly bigger pearls than the usual ( I don’t know why but the thought of Lisa Simpson just came to my mind now, lol). I searched and searched and couldn’t find exactly what I had envisioned. The other day, while buying some notions at the notion shop just across the street from my office, I realized that they had beads and materials for making jewelry and I found myself leaving the place with a bag of big pearls and some jewelry making notions. Later in the week I bought a set of precision pliers at the nearby hardware store and this weekend I managed to put my jewelry making abilities into action! This was the result, I hope you like it. It’s a simple and conservative set of jewelry, but the pearl size really gives it a boost!

Colete com gola de rebuço - Shawl Collar vest

O modelo de tricô do meu conjunto “Extravagancia cor-de-laranja” é da autoria da Amanda Berka encontra-se para download grátis aqui.

Descrição: Bolero confeccionado a partir de um rectângulo de tricô (ver esquema na página do modelo original), tem gola de rebuço tricotada em canelado 2/2 que contorna todo o modelo (pescoço e costas). O corpo do bolero é confeccionado em ponto fantasia.

Material: 7 novelos (50g) de lã Gedifra Riana cor-de-laranja

Modificações: Acrescentei mangas apanhando as malhas ao longo da cava e tricotando 8cm em canelado 2/2.

Conclusão: Fiquei muito satisfeita com este bolero simples, que tanto pode ser usado com um alfinete a apertar como solto. Gostei especialmente do efeito criado ao adicionar as mangas, que lhe dão um ar mais contemporâneo. Fica bem com as calças e a saia do conjunto, mas pode ser usado noutras combinações (por exemplo, usei-o já com umas calças de cintura alta pretas e um top justo de gola alta também preto).

My “Orange Extravaganza” knitted garment is a pattern by Amanda Berka and can be found online here (free download).

Description: This vest is made in one piece – a rectangle – beginning with the collar and working down to the ribbed bottom border (see diagram in the original model pdf file).

Material: 7 skeins (50g) of Gedifra Riana yarn in orange

Modifications: I added short sleeves, by picking up the stitches around the armhole and knitting on the round (2/2 ribbing) for approximately 3 inches.

Conclusion: I am very happy with this easy vest, which can be worn not only with both my Orange Extravaganza pants and skirt but also with other color combinations (for example, a few days ago I wore it with black high-waist pants and a black turtleneck for a dinner out). I like the added sleeves; I think they provide this simple piece with a more contemporary look.

Uma saia muito elegante – A very elegant skirt

Aqui estou eu de volta! Muito obrigada pelos vossos elogios ao casaco de veludo e por todas as expressões de carinho que tenho recebido! Vocês são o máximo!

Antes de mais, tenho um projecto concluído para vos mostrar; é a saia Burda0709 mod116A, um modelo muito original e elegante:

Descrição: Saia afunilada e forrada, tem encaixe da cintura, pregas na frente, bolsos metidos na anca e fecho invisível na costura central de trás.

Modelo original (website BurdaFashion):

Esta saia faz parte de um conjunto, ao qual chamei “Extravagância cor-de-laranja”, constituído também por umas calças e jaqueta do mesmo tecido, outra jaqueta em tweed cor-de-laranja, uma blusa num tom cinza acastanhado e um bolero em tricô laranja. Quando tiver todos os elementos deste conjunto pronto vou tentar tirar fotos com os diversos elementos conjugados (também não tenho conseguido tirar as tão desejadas fotos no exterior a usar o casaco de veludo porque tem chovido bastante por estes lados).

Construção: A saia é bastante fácil de fazer, mas como o tecido usado é axadrezado e a saia é cortada em viés, o nível de dificuldade aumenta um pouco. As margens da costura central de trás, a linha da cintura no cós e as aberturas dos bolsos são reforçadas com fita beta (podem usar tiras de entretela termo-colante cortadas ao comprimento) para que não se deformem com o uso. Na foto seguinte vêm as margens da orla dos bolsos, como exemplo:

Podem ver como se fazem os bolsos com encaixe na anca neste post anterior. Podem ver o detalhe do bolso, onde tive o cuidado de fazer os quadrados coincidirem:

O fecho invisível nas costas (não consegui fazer com que o cós casasse com os quadrados do meio de trás da saia, pois tive que aproveitar ao máximo o tecido; no entanto existe uma simetria):


O detalhe das pregas na frente:

Conclusão: Gosto bastante da saia, mas se a fizesse de novo acrescentava uma abertura atrás para facilitar os movimentos; a saia sobe um pouco ao andar por ser muito justa ao nível dos joelhos. De resto, o modelo é muito giro e o efeito criado pelas pregas torna-a muito elegante e original!

Entretanto já terminei as calças e o bolero, para publicar mal tenha tempo. Fiquem bem!

Here I am, back from my break! Thank you very much for your compliments on the velvet coat and for your emails and supportive messages while I was gone! You guys are the best!

I have one finished project to show you; it’s BWOF0907mod116A, a very elegant and original skirt:

Description: Figure-hugging lined skirt has a shaped waistband, front pleats, side pockets and invisible zipper on the center back.

Original model (at BurdaFashion):

This skirt belongs to a set of matching garments that I called “Orange Extravaganza”; the elements, beside the skirt, are a pair of wide pleated pants, a jacket (both from the same fabric), an orange tweed jacket, a shirt (sort of grayish brown color way) and an orange knitted bolero. I will try to take pictures wearing these garments when the set is completed (I still owe you pictures of me wearing the velvet coat but since it’s pouring rain for days, it has been impossible to take pictures on the outside as I had planned).

Construction: This skirt would be quite easy to make if it wasn’t cut on the bias and if I wasn’t using plaid fabric. Other than that, it is very straightforward. I reinforced the center back seam, the pocket openings and the waistline with beta tape (you can either purchase the special purpose fusible tape or cut some strips of fusible interfacing – cut along the grain if you are using woven interfacing). The reinforcements are very important, and even more important when working with bias cut fabric. Here’s the pocket opening as an example:

More details:

The center back invisible zipper (you can see that the plaids don’t match on the waistband and skirt, along the center back line; I had to make a few concessions or the fabric wouldn’t be enough for all my planned garments. There’s symmetry though):


The front pleats detail:

Conclusion: I’m quite fond of this skirt but if I was to make it again I’d add a center back slit for ease of movement. The skirt tends to ride up slightly while I walk because it’s close fitting at knee level. Other than this, this model is fabulous and the effect created by the pleats really makes this skirt stand out for its elegance and originality!

In the meanwhile the pants and the knitted bolero are completed and I’ll post them as soon as I get some free time. Happy Sewing!
