Aplicar as entretelas (Parte 1) – Applying the interfacings (Part 1)

Viva, caras leitoras!
Hi sewing friends! I've been away from the blogland for a few days, due to excess of work that left me with no time for blogging, sewing or anything related with these activities. During this rough week, what kept me going and cheered me up was receiving some gifts from my sewing friends around the world. They seem to know exactly when I am in need of cheering! I will show you shortly all the treasures that I've received during the week. In the meanwhile I was unable to write the post about tailoring references as I first intended, so it will have to wait a few days. Today I want to show you my progress on interfacing the jacket.

Let's start by the sleeves; you can see that I'm also underlining them using the thin knit fusible (one of the advantages is keeping the other layers of interfacing from showing its outlines on the right side). The weft insertion type of interfacing is cut on the bias and used for reinforcing and cushioning the hems and the sleeve vents:
Applying the fusible interfacings is a process that takes time, and it should be done with care and respecting the manufacturer's instructions. A few general directions apply to all the fusibles though; using a press cloth (that should be used for this purpose only; it prevents that some glue might be stuck to the iron and then transferred to the fabric) is one; another one is that you should press exerting pressure but not sliding the iron over the fabric. It's a press and lift movement. If you slide the iron you may distort the fabric underneath and ruin all the previous work. After the interfacing is bonded to the entire fabric surface, you can gently press the whole piece, sliding the iron; this is done to guarantee that the surface is uniformly pressed. I also press on the right side ALWAYS using a press cloth (this is not the same press cloth that I used for the interfaced side; this one is made of silk organza and I use it for pressing the fabric and not the interfacings). The iron should never make direct contact with the wool crepe on the right side because it can damage the fabric. Lastly, all the interfaced pieces should be left resting flat until they are completely cold.
Now I am about to show you the interfacing procedures on the back and back side panels. Besides underlining I reinforced the hem area, cushioning the place where the facing hems will be sewn to the garment. Another extra procedure was reinforcing all the round seam lines (armholes and neckline) and the shoulders to prevent stretching, using a special purpose fusible tape sent to me by Paco. In the next picture you can observe two different kinds of fusible tape; one is lighter than the other (I chose to use the lighter one for this project):
Els also told me about a few alternative methods for reinforcing the seams, such as using a previously stretched (by pressing and steaming) bias lining strips (they are very lightweight and don't show on the right side) or even using a hand sewn chain stitch. Another idea that came into my mind was cutting thin fusible interfacing strips (cut on grain if the interface is woven), and using them as I used Paco's tape. I was extremely satisfied with the results as you can see; the tape is fused on the SAs, overlapping the stitching line by approximately 1/12".

Extra reinforcement for the pocket opening on one of the side panels:
Here is one of the back panels; it took all the procedures stated above and some more:
For the back I will also make a floating back shield made from the cotton fabric used for the test garment, on which I will fuse the back shoulder reinforcements cut on thick fusible (I couldn't fuse these directly to the wool crepe because the outlines of the thick interfacing would be visible on the right side). The following walks you through the process of making such shoulder shield using the back and side panels as the base pattern. First I tape both patterns to my table, as follows:
Then I place a sheet of semi-transparent paper on top of the two patterns and I trace the back shield pattern as shown in the picture:
Next I use the obtained pattern to cut the cotton fabric on the fold (the fabric should be pre-washed and well steamed so no further shrinkage will occur):
Notice how I pinked the bottom edge of the shoulder shield, to make the edge less likely to show on the right side:
Finally the back shoulder reinforcements are fused to the back shield (note that the shoulder reinforcements have no seam allowances; this is so to avoid adding unnecessary bulk to the seams); after stitching the center back seam and the side panels to the back panels, the completed back made of fashion fabric will be placed together with the back shield and from then on, treated as one single layer of fabric.
And now the treasures that brightened up my awfully busy week!

OBRIGADA, queridos Amigos!
THANK YOU dear Friends!
GRACIAS queridos Amigos!

I'm also eagerly waiting for a package containing a few more samples from Els, that should be here by next week. Both Els and Paco have been extremely helpful, sharing their extensive experience and talent on tailoring and sewing procedures. I don't know the words good enough to thank them both for all this.

I'm shouting out and sending hugs to Rosa and Lisa (they both know why!) ;)

And this is all for today! After writing an article devoted to tailoring references I hope to show you the interfacing procedure on the fronts, collar and lapels; when all this is done I will cut the lining and move on to making the skirt. For this project the highlight goes to all the prep work, as you may have noticed; my opinion is that all the time and effort invested in the prep work are well worth it because of the added quality in the end. If you do your prep work well, putting it all together should be easier and should run smoother! See you all very soon!

PS – I'm studying the possibility of using a check box to enable the readers to chose the language in which they prefer reading this blog, instead of displaying the two languages together; Sigrid came up with a pretty good solution and was so kind to share it!

Testes com entretelas – Testing the interfacings

Today I intend to share with you the results from my tests with interfacings, which lead to the choice of the best approach for this project, in terms of interfacing and methodology. As you know, since I started this project, I considered the possibility of using the traditional approach into tailoring, mainly because I read somewhere that fusing the wool crepe could be difficult and not produce the best results. Since I have limited experience with both wool crepe and the traditional tailoring methods and materials, I decided to run some tests. Next you can see some of the samples that I produced to determine how this fabric would behave with different kinds/methods of interfacing:
First I tested the thin knit fusible that I've been using for several of my garments (mainly as underlining, reinforcing satin and stretch fabrics). This interfacing has no stretch lengthwise but it has some give crosswise (Isabelle, this is the same interfacing I told you about in Paris! I couldn't stop thinking of you when I was running these tests!).

Well, I have to say I was very pleased with the results. This interfacing adheres like a charm, it doesn't alter the drape of the wool crepe that much and it shields the fabric providing it with a little more support. It doesn't come off and leaves no marks or bubbles on the right side. Besides, it's fused at low temperature and no steam; just a little pressure for 5-7 seconds is enough. I will use it mainly for underlining the entire garment. If my results weren't this satisfying, the alternative would be using silk organza (sew-in) for underlining. I will also use this knit interfacing for reinforcing the facings and uppercollar.

Next I tried to padstitch the hair canvas to the wool crepe reinforced with the thin knit fusible:
The hair canvas is a sewn-in interfacing, meaning that it has to be sewn to the fabric. This is achieved through padstitching; I used a very fine short needle and thin embroidery thread matching the fabric color. The diagonal stitches are done in such manner that only one thread is caught by the needle on the wool crepe (right side, underneath the interfacing). You can see that the padstitching is not visible on the right side:
In spite of this, this type of hair canvas feels too heavy on the wool crepe. A thinner and softer kind would work best but unfortunately this was the only kind I found on sale locally. I have yet to try the traditional tailoring methods, but not on this project; I believe I'll have plenty of future opportunities. I did love the padstitching process, perhaps because I am very fond of hand sewing. I can hardly wait to put all that I've learned into practice! But for this project I must focus on obtaining the best results with what I have and I have no doubts that I liked the end result of the fusibles better.

Proceeding with the tests, I not only tried different kinds of fusibles but also applied them to a previously fused sample. The results were always satisfactory. This next interfacing is woven, a little heavier than the thin knit fusible; it's applied setting the iron between the wool and cotton setting and first giving it a burst of steam, then maintaining pressure for about 10 seconds. Remember that you should always use a press cloth when fusing. Always read the manufacturer's directions and run some tests first.
I obtained excellent results, even on top of the knit fusible:

I think I will use this woven interfacing on the fronts and undercollar, sleeve openings and the shaped waistband on the skirt. The lapels and the collar stand (included on the collar pattern) are going to take a second layer of this interfacing.

Next I tested this weft insertion type, heavier that the thin knit fusible and with no give lengthwise and crosswise, yet very soft and malleable:
It's applied using the same directions as for the thin knit fusible. I'll use this kind cut on the bias for hem reinforcement.
Obrigada!
And that's all I have for the moment. Yesterday I finished cutting out the suit and I started on the interfacing/thread tracing process. This will take some time and in the meanwhile I intend to list the most important references I found for tailoring, following an extensive research on the best methods and notions. I also would like to thank Els and Paco for helping me out with their expert advice on best techniques and materials. A great lot from what I’ve learned so far on this matter I owe to them both. Thank you!

¡Gracias!

Como preparar o crepe de lã e alguns materiais - How to pre-treat the wool crepe and some of the notions

This is pretty basic stuff but should never be disregarded.

Seja qual for o método, é importante fazer alguns testes primeiro.
Most of you know well the importance of pre-treating fabric and notions before using them, mainly pre-shrinkage of fabrics and notions, otherwise a risk is taked into ending up with a garment one or two sizes smaller or distorted after its first wash or even while making the garment, during pressing. Depending on the fabrics, we can send the fabric to the dry cleaner, wash it by hand or machine, or simply press it (or none of the previous!). There is also the so called “London Shrink Method” for dry-clean-only fabrics, well explained by Carolyn (see link below). Whatever method you use, it's advisable to run some tests first.

There are yet a few other procedures to take into account when preparing a fabric for cutting. One of these procedures is the straightening of the grain to avoid distortion on the final cut garment. Any woven fabric has a lengthwise grain (called warp threads) and a crosswise grain (called weft threads). The bias is any diagonal line that crosses both warp and weft and the true bias is a 45º line. On the lengthwise edges there is a firmly woven edge that is called the “selvage”. Normally the patterns include an arrow that indicates the lengthwise grain of fabric. It is of extreme importance to the correct hang of the garment that this line is correctly aligned when laying out the pattern for cutting and it should always run parallel to the selvages unless otherwise indicated. It is equally important that the fabric is laying flat and the crosswise ends are straight and perpendicular to the selvage.

The first step then will be straightening the fabric ends ( finding the crosswise grain on the edges that don't have a selvage). For this purpose there are two methods: pulling a thread and tearing the fabric ends.

The first method consists in snipping through the fabric selvage, near the fabric end, with scissors and grasp one thread that runs across the weave; pull it gently, allowing the fabric to gather and cut along the formed line; repeat with the same thread until reaching the other selvage (this photo is just an illustration, since I've used the tearing method in this case):
The “pulling a thread” method is specially indicated for soft and loosely woven fabrics.

Another method that is best if you are dealing with a tightly woven fabric is the tearing method; after snipping the selvage with scissors, you can tear the fabric until you reach the other selvage, securing both fabric ends and pulling them apart.

If the fabric has a horizontal stripe pattern or checks, it's easier to cut the fabric using one of the horizontal lines as reference.

After straightening the edges, the fabric is folded lengthwise joining together both selvages and we can see now if the fabric grain needs straightening. If the two straightened edges match and are perpendicular (at a right angle) with the selvage, the grain is straight; if not, the fabric should be slightly dampened first (using a damp towel or sheet and folding it together with the fabric, letting t be so for a few hours) and then gently pull the fabric on the true bias until the grain is straight. The fabric should remain flat and straight until it dries completely. In this particular case I didn't have to straighten up the grain and I moved to the next step, that is checking the fabric for imperfections (small tears, stains, difference in texture or density, etc). For this I carefully watched the entire fabric surface at good light and then against the light, marking the imperfections if found. This is very important too if you don't want to end up with a garment piece with a visible imperfection. Don't ask me how I know this.
Next I pré-shrinked the fabric using Carolyn’s (Diary of a Sewing Fanatic blog) “tested and tried” method of steaming the hell out of the wool crepe (she also explains other methods for shrinking in her article) but Shannon (Hungry Zombie Couture blog) also wrote an excellent article on pre-shrinking wools where she explains her favorite method for the same result. I will explain these two methods for my Portuguese speaking readers next:

Besides pre-shrinking the fashion fabric, some of the notions used should also be pre-shrunk; for the lining I simply steamed it; the hair canvas (at the time I still didn't knew if I was going to use it for this project or not; but this is subject for the next post) and the cotton tapes were soaked in hot water in my bathtub (the hair canvas is accordion folded) and left there until the water was cold. Then I carefully rinsed these materials and left them to hang dry on the bath rod, on top of a bath towel. Before they were completely dry I ironed them with a dry iron, letting the hair canvas dry and cool completely before moving it.
Next time I will show you the interfacing tests! See you soon!

O modelo de prova (Parte 2): mangas - The test garment (Part 2): the sleeves

Today I finished setting in the sleeves on my test garment and also pre-treated the wool crepe, the canvas interfacing and the cotton tape. Next I initiated the interfacing tests to determine which will be the best approach for this suit: traditional tailored, mix traditional/contemporary techniques or contemporary tailoring techniques. I must keep in mind all the variables, like the fabric and interfacing weight, the fabric characteristics and the intended end result. My aim will be achieving the best results possible for the look I'm after. Today I will show you the sleeves on the test garment, next I will address the preparation of the fabric and notions and after this, the tests with several types of interfacings.

After constructing the sleeves (these are two-piece sleves), before attaching them to the armhole, I want to highlight the numbered notches that must match on the sleeve and the armscye when the sleeve is attached:

Na manga (molde e tecido): On the sleeve (pattern and fabric):

Na cava (molde e tecido): On the armscye (pattern and fabric):
Previously the armscye's curve next to the side seam was staystitched and the sleeve cap was stitched near the stitching line with the needle thread with little tension (between the ease notches that are represented as circles in the BWOF patterns). Before setting in the sleeve I measured the sleeve cap, comparing it to the armscye; the total amount of ease is 2.5cm (1 inch).

I basted a long running stitch starting at the shoulder notch and following the true grain of the fabric. This line will help me determine if the sleeve is hanging correctly. The sleeve should be vertical from the top to the elbow and then lean slightly forward, mimicking the relaxed arm position. This is a well drafted pattern and that’s exactly what I achieved:

The final model will have a smoother and rounder sleeve cap because I will use these “moustache” sleeve heads which I ordered from Sewing Diva Els some time ago:
I can say now that the sleeve is the correct length for me (with my arm bent at 45º, the sleeve edge touches my wrist bone) and the sleeve design is close fitting and narrow though it's not too narrow to become unconfortable. Take a closer look at the original model to confirm this:

Até breve! See you soon!

You all make me very happy, knowing that my work is truly appreciated and that you find it useful and inspiring. It's truly rewarding!

In my last post I mentioned that I would be testing the sleeve next but that won't be possible unless I have the right shoulder pads pinned in place. Only this way I can feel the right hanging of the sleeves. The commercial shoulder pads (at least the ones I find on sale locally) are not right for this jacket because they are too short and I can't get them to match the stitching line from the back to the front; they simply don't fit in this shoulder/armhole shape. Next you can see a picture from the armhole with the commercial shoulder pad in place. There is a hollow space there and the edge doesn’t align with the stitching line:

The shoulder line is high and slightly concave. To give you an idea of the shoulder shape I'm showing you the back and the front patterns. The shoulder is not a straight line (remember that this pattern doesn’t include SAs, so you are seeing the actual stitching lines).
Given all this, I decided to make my own shoulder pads (and this is my fist attempt on such a task), using the shoulder reinforcement pattern as a guide (these reinforcements will help defining the shoulder line):
These patterns are not intended to model the shoulder pads because the shoulder pad should start about one inch away from the neckline and should end about 1/5 inch past the sleeve stitching line at the shoulder line. So I must retrace the patterns specifically for this purpose. Also note as the back part is bigger than the front. To trace a new pattern I placed a sheet of pattern paper on top of the shoulder reinforcement pattern and traced:
Using the back and front shoulder pad patterns I cut several layers of felt and joined the fronts to the backs by the shoulder line, making a machine zigzag stitch. Then I graded the round edge of each layer so they get smaller and smaller. I also cut slanted edges on each layer. Then I joined all the layers and basted them together keeping a round shoulder shape as I baste. This was the end result:
I know this is not what you usually see on custom made shoulder pads but I think it will serve its purpose well, providing a rigid, raised and well defined shoulder line. In the meanwhile, Paco has offered to get me a special kind of shoulder pads that tailors use, made not with foam but with several cotton batting layers and I will try those too on this jacket!

Here is the shoulder pad pinned in place. I am satisfied with the result. The shoulder pad is well shaped and defined, though it’s not too heavy.

After testing the sleeve I will pre-shrink the wool crepe and some of the notions, and then I will cut all the pieces. With the remaining fashion fabric I will be performing interfacing and pressing tests. I hope to find the time to show you all this!

A year has passed since I’ve created this blog, where I shared the clothes I made, where I had the pleasure of meeting wonderful people and was able to learn a lot; I think it’s time to review this first year and my opinion is that it has been positively wonderful so far.

During its first year, Couture et Tricot had more than 100.000 visits from all over the world and was a great channel for meeting and making friends with very talented people. It’s with a deep emotional feeling that now recall my first blog entry where I timidly presented myself to the sewing blogland; at the time I had no idea of the proportions and consequences this simple action would take in my life. It’s a lot of hard work but you know, it pays off because you guys make all this worthy and meaningful! Be always very welcome to Couture et Tricot!

O modelo de prova (parte 1) - The test garment (part 1)

First of all, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas celebration and also that this New Year will bring you all peace, happiness, love and good health. I thank you all the good wishes, gifts and comments received while I was away on vacation. I feel very lucky and honoured for having such wonderful friends al around the world, friends who cherish me and move me forward!

Now I must catch up on all the blogs (I have more than 200 unread blog entries in my blogroll), answer to all the emails and also resume the making of the Unrath & Strano suit. Before leaving to Algarve I had already started on the construction of the test garment using an inexpensive cotton fabric and transferring the pattern to the fabric using a tracing wheel and yellow tracing paper:
See the detail of the pocket opening (the paper pattern doesn’t include the seam allowances; they are added as I cut. The pocket opening doesn’t include SAs because the two edges must match without overlapping):
Here you can see the yellow markings left on the fabric:
Today I couldn’t help myself and since I was missing sewing so much, I took it on to the next stage! After basting together all the pieces (except the sleeves, facings, pocket, upper collar and the belt), here is the result so far:
I retraced some of the relevant markings using basting thread (center lines on the jacket and skirt, waist placement lines, pocket placement lines, notches, etc.); the hem allowances and edge allowances were turned inside and basted in place. On the skirt, the zipper was basted in place, along with the side opening facings and the hem allowances. The horizontal side pleats are simply pinned in place on the skirt’s right side.
This first test serves two purposes: establishing the need of alterations and/or adjustments is one of them. To fulfil this task I need to place the shoulder pads in place and this test garment will be needed for choosing the right type of shoulder pads. I plan on trying several different kinds, including custom made shoulder pads. I still need to cut the shoulder reinforcements on thick interfacing and I might use the same pattern for making my own shoulder pads if anything else fails. The shoulder shape is well raised and defined so I might need custom made shoulder pads to fit its exact shape. The second purpose of this first test is establishing the collar roll line accurately. After basting the under collar in place and folding the collar in a way that it lays smoothly on the shoulders and back, I marked the roll line with pins for later transferring it to the paper pattern:
As far as I am concerned, I find the jacket pattern one of the best and accurately drafted patterns I’ve tried so far. It holds its shape to the body following the body contour in a very flattering way. The asymmetrical effect on the front is perfect. The proportions (the vertical and the horizontal) are right for me, the darts are correctly placed, the horizontal lines (chest and waist lines) are at the right place and the pocket is just right where it is. I don’t think I will alter this pattern and only minor adjustments on the vertical seams will be needed.

As for the skirt, I’m not equally pleased. First of all it’s too tight and secondly, I don’t think the original design will flatter my figure, though it looks nice on the dressform together with the jacket. Here are a few pictures of the skirt alone, front and back:

Besides all this, the side opening is too deep for wearing this skirt at a conservative working environment and even for going out; I don’t think I’m comfortable with it. What I plan to do is tracing the size 40 instead of the 38, alter the side opening length and then take one of the too options: either make smaller (less deep) horizontal pleats on the side or skip the horizontal pleats at all; if I skip the horizontal pleats I might need to reshape the hem so it remains asymmetrical, coordinating with the jacket’s design. We'll see.

Next time I will show you the tests for the sleeves! See you soon!
