I made two pant suits last year and this is one of them. The jacket and the knickers belong to a set of matching coordinates that was featured in BWOF 09/2006 (click here). From this set I’ve also made the Coat (shorter version), the Marlene Dietrich style trousers/pants and the shirt (both trousers and shirt will be reviewed later); I still want to make the cap, the necktie and the vest in that set.
(Sorry for the showing shirt underneath the jacket but when I noticed that it was too late!)
Description: Jacket and knickers both men’s-style; the original model features ravelling edges on the jacket (front edges, hem, pockets and elbow patches are all ravelling); the jacket combines too coordinating fabrics, there are wide lapels, patch pockets, elbow patches and cuffs; the knickers have leg cuffs, waist band yoke, front zipper and buttons, also two front pockets.

Podem ver também o esquemático deste conjunto:
Here is the line drawing for the pant suit:
E fotos do modelo original:
And a few pictures from the original model:

A jaqueta é completamente forrada.
Fabric used: this set uses two coordinate fabrics for the jacket: for the lapels/front facings, patch pockets, cuffs and elbow patches, houndstooth fabric is used; for the remaining jacket and knickers, glen checks (we call it Prince of Wales). The jacket is fully lined.

The houndstooth fabric behaved very well when handled; unfortunately I can't say the same for the glen checks fabric. As usual I pre-treated both fabrics; I washed them both on a gentle cycle, left them to dry outside and pressed them before taking them to the cutting table. After being treated this way, the glen checks fabric turned out too soft and it wouldn't hold its form as it should be. Even after being interfaced, this fabric tends to wrinkle a lot (see the pictures of me wearing the suit). Also the checks aren't regular so I had a hard time trying to match them.

Size: ranging from 34 to 44, I traced a 40 for the jacket (which I regret, a 38 would do just fine) and a 38 for the knickers.

Pattern/model alterations: I kept the original model style lines except for the ravelling edges; with the jacket on I noticed it needs a small sway back adjustment, perhaps because this size is too big for my figure; I will fix the back in the near future.

Now I will show you some pictures with all the details I consider relevant for the making of this suit, mainly I want to show you how I managed to match the plaids; the matching of the plaids is better achieved if the fabric is cut single layered instead of folded in half; the right side is facing up and the pattern pieces are carefully placed so that the vertical/horizontal stripes match on almost every seam. There are also other details to take into account, like keeping a vertical stripe on the CF/CB seams but I will explain this as I show you the detail pictures.

A jaqueta: The jacket:

Front: note that the CF line matches the middle of a vertical stripe so both left and right fronts match exactly when the jacket is buttoned; also see how the horizontal lines on the sleeves are aligned with the horizontal lines on the jacket front; another important detail is the symmetry of the collar:

Back: once more note the CB alignment and the symmetry between left and right back; you can see here that the collar is not matching the checks on the back but this is so because I thought that it would be more important to balance the front edges on the collar. There is a back seam on the sleeves but you can't see this easily because of the checks perfect alignment.
Side view: the sleeves hang smoothly to the side of the body, you can see here the elbow patch and the buttoned cuff:
Detalhe da lapela:
Lapels/front facing detail:

Detalhe da cotoveleira na manga:
Elbow patch detail:
O punho, por fora e por dentro; o forro é apanhado no punho:
Cuffs, outside and inside views:

Patch pockets: the pocket is lined, stitched by hand to the jacket front and then topstitched very close to the edge (I followed Claire Chaeffer's method):

Here you see the front and the buttoned yoke; note the horizontal and vertical alignments; note this on the side pockets which are almost invisible:
O detalhe do fecho na frente:
Front zipper detail:
I used lining here (pocket inside) instead of fashion fabric to reduce bulk:
This is the back, once more note the way the checks match and the symmetry:
The leg cuffs (outside and inside view):

Fiquem bem!
Conclusion: this was my first plaids project; it was a wonderful sewing learning experience for me; I don't say I'm 100% satisfied with the end result mainly because of the Prince of Wales fabric, I think it's poor in quality and I should have waited to find a better fabric, but I was too eager to make this suit and I used what I found available at the time. Also I will fix the jacket back for a better fit in the near future. Happy sewing everybody!

O fecho invisível - The invisible zipper

Personally I like to sew the zipper before sewing the side and shoulder seams, this way the zipper is easier to handle and you can work it on a flat surface. This particular zipper is called "invisible zipper" because when it is ready in place no seam is visible on the right side. If you sew this zipper right you'll get professional results.

The method I'm using is very well explained and illustrated (my dress is black so not the best choice to show the details) at THE SEWING DIVAS blog, a tutorial by Els. I've chosen this method for two reasons: firstly it makes use of an ordinary zipper foot instead of the special purpose foot for invisible zippers (which I don't like) shown in the next picture (as far as I know, these special foots are sold at the notion stores here; I tried asking for one at the local Singer supplier and they told me they didn't have any (!!) ):
Secondly, after trying this method once I've obtained the best results. If you want to try the conventional method using the special zipper foot, just follow this link: http://www.sewing.org/enthusiast/html/el_zipinvis.html.

I'm not going to repeat Els’ instructions but I will show you some pictures of what I did for this dress.

As you can see, this method calls for the back seam to be stitched from the hem to the back opening notch (if you are following the conventional method this seam should be left open):
From the zipper opening signal to the neck I just machine baste the opening (I set the stitch to its maximum length and I set the needle thread tension dial to its minimum), this way it’s easier to press the SAs flat along the center back line (again, first I press along the stitching line), using a seam roll to prevent impressions on the right side of the garment:
After the CB seam is pressed flat I like to serge the CB SAs using a three thread overlock stitch (this is also what I am going to do for the side and shoulder seams):
Now I just pull the bobbin thread along the zipper opening to easily unstitch the machine basting; the fold lines along this opening will serve as a guide for sewing the zipper in place:

Don't forget to press the zipper coils flat! This is essential for this method to succeed!
Here you can see how I first secure one of the sides using pins:
Then I hand baste the zipper with silk thread 1mm away from the coils (so there is some space for the machine stitches latter):
And here you see me stitching the fist side of the zipper (I made a mistake and I started on the right side instead of the left side as instructed by Els; this is not a big mistake but this way the dress goes to the right side of the machine, instead of hanging on the left side where there is more space); I show you this photo because my zipper presser foot is different from Els’, but both are zipper feet. With my machine I had to fine tune the position of the needle so it would stay right next to the zipper coil; this is very important if you want the zipper to be truly invisible.
There's no need to repeat every step of the tutorial so I leave you with a picture of the final result; note that the pinstripes are symmetrical along the CB/zipper seam (that's why I thread trace every line very carefully!).
Fiquem bem!
Be well!

- The back is done on the Anny Blatt sweater!

After receiving the catalogues I ordered from 10Pelotes (Thank you Emilie for your gift!):
I decided to start this sweater right away because it is ideal for the mild days, which are approaching fast:
The back is ready; as you can see, this sweater is very easy to knit; the only stitch used is ribbing 3/3 and the back has the shape of a rectangle; for shaping the waist, a few stitches are decreased on each side and from the waist up they are increased again. The back length is 34cm and the front will be exactly the same as the back.
Here you have a close up picture , so that you can see better both the stitch yarn:
Tenham um óptimo fim-de-semana! Have a great weekend everybody!

Coser as pinças no vestido – Sewing darts on the dress

This blog entry is about sewing the darts on this dress and a few tips I learned through the years for this purpose. I think this text will be of some interest mainly for the beginner but the advanced sewers can also participate sharing their own tips, if they wish so.

Before I begin, let me try to define "dart": a dart is a stitched fabric fold that serves the purpose of shaping the fabric to the body contours. Darts can be straight or curved, single pointed or double pointed and may follow different directions but most commonly they are horizontal or vertical.

On this particular dress we have four oblique darts (almost horizontal) on the front (two chest darts and two hip darts) and two vertical double pointed darts on the back, intended to shape the waist area of the dress.

The chest darts should point to the bust point and they are sewn on a single step (the same for the hip darts). Starting with the fashion fabric with all the dart lines thread traced, I fold the fabric through the center of the dart, holding the right sides of the fabric together and carefully overlapping the stitching lines. I use a pin to make sure that the stitching lines are aligned and I pin along the stitching line as shown in the next picture; another way is to hand baste the stitching line.
Darts should always be stitched from wide to end points; a little trick I use is shortening the stitch length as I approach the tip. I tie a knot at the tip of the dart before I cut the loose thread ends close to this knot.
The waist vertical darts are sewn exactly like the other darts but in two steps instead of one; always start at the center and stitch to the tip; repeat on the other side, overlapping a few stitches at the middle.
Pressing the darts (after removing the thread basting): first I press the darts flat along the stitching line; after doing this I press the dart to one side. When following this procedure it's very important to use a rounded pressing surface. To prevent unwanted fabric impressions I use a stripe of brown paper when pressing the darts to one side.
In Haute Couture darts are usually cut open; the SAs are trimmed and pressed open and a thin wood stick is used to press the tip of the dart so the fabric is well centred and won't pucker. I usually do this when dealing with bulky fabrics only so on this dress I'll just press darts to one side.

Darts are pressed following certain rules; on the fashion fabric horizontal darts (or almost horizontal) are pressed towards the waist and the vertical darts are pressed towards the center (CB in this case). Before pressing vertical darts to one side I clip them at the center (see red arrow) so they lie flat without puckering when pressed. The next drawing shows some common examples:
Just a little note to add that I thread traced the lining also; I did this because I want the lining to be slightly tighter than the dress and I must stitch accurately if I want to succeed:
Lining darts are sewn the same way, only I press them to the opposite direction; I do this to keep the folds from overlapping and hence reduce bulk.
One more thing: on the original model the darts are topstitched 5mm away of their stitching line; I haven't decided yet if I want to do this on this dress.

On my next few blog entries about this dress I will discuss side seams, the invisible zipper, facings, the lining and how to put all this together in a dress. Some time ago I found an interesting and relevant article at Diary of a Sewing Fanatic blog where CMarie wrote about her method for sewing a lining to a sleeveless dress; there were also many interesting comments adding to the subject of personal and different techniques. I think this article and its comments are very interesting to read if you want to follow what I'll be doing next.

Finally I received the silk organza that I'll use to remake my organza blouse that got ripped by accident. I was unable to find silk organza locally so a dear friend offered to buy it and mailed it to me, along with a lot of precious tips for sewing this special kind of fabric.
I ordered a few notions and tools as my friend advised; these notions should take a few weeks to arrive (I couldn't find them locally) and only when I gather everything I need I'll be able to start this new project, sharing all the details and sewing tips with you as I always do.

I was in awe when I felt the touch of silk organza! It feels completely different from the synthetic one (you can compare them in the next picture); the silk organza is more tightly woven and it doesn't shine as much as the synthetic; it's also heavier and crispier than the synthetic organza.
Entretanto tenho o vestido para acabar! Até breve!
In the meanwhile I must get back to the dress! See you soon!

Cortar o forro para o vestido - Cutting the lining for the dress

Before moving on to the lining pattern, I want to show you the result of underlining the dress with thin fusible knit interfacing; in the next picture you can see both right and wrong sides after fusing the interfacing on. As you can observe, both sides are impeccable, no wrinkles or bubbles at all. The best results with this method are guaranteed if both fabric and interfacing don't shrink when heat and moisture are applied to them. This kind of fusible interfacing doesn't shrink and, after washing and steam pressing the fashion fabric, I could tell it doesn't shrink at all too.
To alter the pattern for cutting the lining all it takes is taking off the facings width from the pattern pieces (the lining will be stitched to the facings); next photo sequence will show how this is done in this case.

First I place the back facing pattern on top of the back pattern, overlapping the CB and the collar outlines; I trace the facing bottom outline on the back pattern and I also trace the side seam on the facing (doted line):
The remaining facing will be used to trace another outline on the back half of the side panel, as shown in the next picture; I also trace a doted line on the side panel where the facing ends:
From this doted line on I'll use the front facing to continue the tracing of the new outline on the front half of the side panel:
The remaining front facing is placed on top of the front panel, aligning the CF and the collar outline as I did for the back:
Here you can see the new outlines; the facing width can now be cut away and the pattern is ready to be used for cutting the lining:
At this point I've pinned the pattern pieces to the lining and I'm preparing to cut the lining.
Até à próxima!
See you next time!
