Last 2016 finished garment: Vogue 1527 view B (Paco Peralta for Vogue tie collar blouse) - 2016#42

EN Summary: HAPPY NEW YEAR to all! My last 2016 garment is this delicate silk blouse that completes the V1527 garment set along with the long tuxedo jacket and the calf-length skirt with front overlap. I wore this set for New Year's Eve dinner but couldn't take decent photos without natural light, so I will try to photograph the full outfit again today and update this post with a link to my personal style blog later. In the meanwhile keep reading the full sewing review of the blouse.

Pattern Description (from the pattern envelope/website): "Loose-fitting blouse has collar extending into tie, back yoke extending into forward shoulder seams and French cuffs". I may also add that all the seams are french seams (click here for an illustrated tutorial), which are pressed to one side (typically to the back) and edge-stitched from the right side.
---
Pattern Sizing: The pattern is available in two ranges: 4-6-8-10-12 and 10-12-14-16-18; I cut size 14 according to my personal bust measurement.
---

Did it look like the like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?: Yes, it looked exactly like the photo/drawing.
---

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, the instructions were very thorough and I didn't deviate much from them. Mainly what I did differently was sewing the back yoke using the "burrito method" and I did the cuffs interfacing a little different, following a tip from Paco Peralta: I interfaced both outer and inner cuff pieces with thin knit fusible and for the outer piece (the one which is visible when the cuffs are turned up and buttoned), I applied a second layer of cotton woven interfacing, but excluding the seam allowances. It worked like a charm! For the placket buttonholes I used backing: a rectangle of silk organza placed under the placket, covering each buttonhole placement area; after the buttonhole was machine stitched, I carefully trimmed off the organza around the buttonhole. You can also use self-fabric for the same purpose.
---
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? No dislikes, the blouse is gorgeous and the pattern is very well drafted. I particularly liked that the pattern comes with a button/buttonhole template for the front placket, it makes the job of marking the buttonholes much easier.
---
Fabric used: I used the same fabric as the original model: 100% silk crepe de chine from Sodintex (here) and I am quite pleased with it. The fabric suggestions for this pattern are crepe de chine, charmeuse and I would stick to these as the blouse delivers its best effect with really sheer and fluid fabrics. I used polyester thread for general stitching and rayon embroidery thread for topstitching and buttonholes (used just on the needle). The buttons are quite plain (they will be hidden by the scarf), but for making the cuff-links (the instructions include an explanation on how to make the cuff-links using two buttons connected with a thread-link), I used slightly bigger buttons with a golden contrast:
---
Tips for slippery silk fabrics: This type of slippery fabric requires special care when cutting and handling; I used a straight-stitch needle plate (it features a small circular needle hole which prevents the sheer fabric from being pushed down into it) and size 60/8 needles, the finest. For cutting sheer fabrics, the best way is laying out the fabric on top of paper, straightening it out so the grain is perfectly straight, and then pinning/weighting the pattern pieces on top of both paper/fabric layers. If pins are used, chose the finest silk pins for the job. I personally prefer cutting with a rotary wheel but very sharp or serrated sheers can be used to cut through all layers. The fabric won't shift and the pattern pieces are cut accurately. Following another expert tip from Paco, I used paper tablecloth as the bottom paper layer and it worked wonderfully because this type of paper really holds the fabric in place well. This paper is inexpensive and can be found in home utilities shops.
For marking I used old-school thread tracing and japanese basting thread. The rayon thread can also be used for basting if you're worried that the cotton basting thread will leave piercing marks, but I tested and all the marks came out after lightly steam pressing.
For pressing I used an organza pressing cloth and a reliable iron with little steam setting. It is important that the iron doesn't dip water because it may stain the silk permanently if that kind of accident happens.

Pattern alterations or any design changes made: I shortened the sleeves by 1 1/2"(!!). I've been noticing that in the latest Vogues the sleeves are really long for me; it's either my arms that have shrunk or something has changed in their sizing/grading. With my tuxedo jacket I was over-confident and only noticed that the sleeves were too long for me after the jacket was made. I couldn't leave it like that and had to alter the sleeves from the top (an advanced tailoring technique) because I didn't want to mess with the sleeve vent and my hand-made buttonhole, but now they fit me perfectly in length and they look just like the model's on the cover photo (with the blouse cuffs peeking out under the sleeves). My little word of advice is not skipping the muslin stage and paying special attention to proportion and sleeve length with these latest Vogue patterns.
---

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes and yes! I highly recommend this pattern, it's the perfect sheer blouse. It can be worn tied or untied and it flows wonderfully with movement. I will take photos as soon as I can so you can see how it looks on me.
---
Faria este modelo de novo? Recomenda-o a outras pessoas? Sim e sim!

Conclusion: A great pattern, outstanding results and a fantastic sewing lesson is what you get. I am really in love and V1527 must be one of my favorite patters so far!

So what's next? I plan on writing a 2016 sewing year in review listing all my 42 (!!) makes this year. It was one of my most productive years and I think you'll enjoy looking back at some of my 2016 garments. At the time I'm writing this it's really cold outside so I am not sure I will go out to take photos with the V1527 complete set today, but if not, I'll do it as soon as there's a chance. To all of you, my deepest gratitude for following along and for all the support; I really enjoy blogging and sharing what I sew knowing that on that side there's a growing interest about fine sewing, learning new techniques and/or improving what you already know! THANK YOU ALL and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
---

Lovely blouse, Tany. Based on your first blog post of this pattern I bought it since I have the perfect fabric for the blouse. Good tips on the cutting and the use of embroidery thread for the topstitching - had not thought of that.

Happy New Year Tany! Did you have problems sewing the slippery fabric?

Happy New Year Tany! I am not sure my Husqvarna Lilly can sew this fabric. It usually pulls it inside the bobbin or cannot start the seam properly like it cannot catch the fabric. How do you manage it with your machine?

Tany said...

Ana, please read the section titled "tips for sewing slippery fabric" in this same blog post; for avoiding the sewing machine "eating up"my fabric I used s straight stitch needle plate, a size 8 needle and I've also decreased the pressure on the presser foot. I didn't have any problems after having made these settings ☺

What a lovely, beautifully made blouse. I've ordered the pattern (both, actually) based on your reviews and I hope to develop my skills enough to sew them. Thanks so much for all the detailed information.
