O fato “O Diabo Veste Prada – “The Devil Wears Prada” suit

Português
English (uncheck the other box and check this one)

Fiquem bem!

This suit (at least the jacket) was part of Miranda’s (Meryl Streep) wardrobe in the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” (next picture is courtesy of www.luxist.com):
For now I’m making the jacket and, if I have the time, I’ll make the trousers. As you can see it’s a very complex model, draped over the shoulders:
I am very short on time so I am not making a test garment; I’m trusting in my luck and this Donna Karan’s pattern. Altering the flat pattern would be almost impossible with all these folds, anyway. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I’ve already mentioned that I won’t have much time to post about this project (I plan on wearing it on a friend’s wedding soon) but I have to show you some of the interesting details. One thing that doesn’t come obvious in the model pictures is the self fabric fringe that adorns the seams, the closure placket and the fabric rose (you should pick a fabric that unravels well, for making the fringe):

This is one of the seams that joins the side panel to the front panel, completed with the fringe, SAs pressed towards the CF and topstitched; the overall effect is gorgeous:
The fabric flower is made of two fabric layers, raw edges sewn together with the fringe in between (one edge takes the fringe, the other is gathered) and finally, a three row topstitching is added to finish the edge:
In the previous photo you can see the discrete silver threads that run across the fabric! This fabric was a great find: it’s black on black striped, slightly stretchy and it drapes beautifully!

The jacket is unlined so extra care is required on the seam finishing inside. I’m using a special purpose binding tape (a gift from dear friend Els), very thin and light. It’s perfect for this job:

More news as soon as I find the time! Have fun, guys!

This is so couture! I love complicated patterns and I think this one will definitely look runway. What a gorgeous outfit for a wedding, I can't wait to see it on you. I think you should be OK with no testing the pattern first. The Donna Karan that I tried fitted me perfectly without any adjustments. Good luck to you, my friend and do take care of you... (yes, you should put your own words into practice:))

Beijinhos e bom trabalho.

Hi Tany, this is great - I'm looking forward to your version. May I ask a question - hopefully I'm not stealing your rare time... How do you use this binding tape? Do you fold it around the edges and zigzag or overlock? I can't tell exactly from the photo. And the material looks like organza?
Thank you and good progression from berry, Switzerland

Que espetáculo! Eu vi o filme e sei qual é o casaco.

Nina, I believe it's the first time you are commenting, so thank you and be welcome to Couture et Tricot!

Ana Carina: Obrigada amiga! Beijinhos!

Berry: Thank you! This seaming tape is made of a very thin knit (!!). I've never seen anything like this but it provides a neat finish and it's very easy to apply, comparing to other binding methods for seams. I simply fold it in half, favouring the side underneath the SA and pin it in place, covering the raw edge (pins perpendicular to the edge). Then I machine stitch it (straight stitch). I guess a ziguezag stitch could also be used but I didn't think it was necessary for this fabric.

Paco.- Muchas gracias, querido amigo!

Beijinhos,

Tany
