Next up: V1527 view A, the Paco Peralta long Tuxedo Jacket – Já em seguida: a jaqueta smoking comprida de Paco Peralta para a Vogue

EN Summary: I’ve been sewing designer patterns like there is no tomorrow and the next in line is this fabulous suit by Paco Peralta for Vogue. I’m starting with the long tuxedo jacket, and if you’ve know me for a while you’ll know that for me preparation is key to achieve high quality results. This article addresses the prep work for the jacket, from picking up the fabric to choosing the inner structure that will compliment the fabric used towards the intended result. EN: This ensemble must be my favorite from all of Paco's creations so I really want to make it special. The set is described on Vogue Patterns' website as: " Semi-fitted lined jacket has princess seams, single-button closure, shawl collar, in-seam pockets, two piece sleeves, back vent and contrast insets. Loose-fitting blouse has collar extending into tie, back yoke extending into forward shoulder seams and french cuffs. Semi-fitted skirt has back invisible zipper." I think the description alone doesn't tell what these garments are about so if you want o see this set in real life and in motion, I really recommend watching the video below showcasing some of McCall's present collection garments, which includes some captions of V1527:

EN: Watching the video I could see how light and flowy Paco's ensemble really is and I wanted to achieve that same effect of light tailoring with lots of movement (very much like Italian style tailoring). Last Friday my fabrics arrived in the mail: Italian 100% virgin wool double-faced twill/crepe from Gratacós (here) and 100% silk crepe from Sonditex (here) to make the blouse. The cherry on top of the cake were these magnificent black crystal buttons, a gift from my friend Paco.

For those living in the US wanting fabrics for this jacket, I believe Mood Fabrics has the same fabric or very similar (here) and GorgeousFabrics also stocks this luxurious Ralph Lauren medium weight wool crepe (here) and silk/wool satin for the contrast inset (here).
---
EN: The double-faced twill-crepe didn't disappoint, and I was immediately fascinated by its superior quality and drape. It has a matte surface (the "right side") and the wrong side has a subtle shine so it can be used for the contrast collar inset. It won't be as obvious as satin, but still there will be some contrast. The instructions for the jacket indicate using sew-in interfacing for the jacket but, in my opinion, this particular fabric that I'm using is perfect for speed tailoring techniques and a lighter structure. Regarding the fit I'm not worried because I know Paco's work as a pattern designer and my last coat from him with similar princess lines (the Cassock coat) didn't need a single adjustment; all I did was measuring the pattern and checking that it has enough ease for me, but most of you should probably sew a test garment first. After preparing the pattern and tracing any extra pattern pieces that I needed, I proceeded with cutting the fabric and then used the scraps to test some interfacing samples; I settled for a combination that I've used before: weft insertion for the fronts, facings, side panels and collar inset (stronger yet soft support), and thin knit fusible (light and soft support) for the upper back, hems, back slit and sleeve caps:
---
EN: The focal point of the jacket is the collar; although it is described the as a "shawl collar", I wouldn't call it that because, well, it is not a collar, it's a folded inset that is stitched to both front and front facing. Below you can see it with more detail:
---
EN: Stitching this inset to the front and facings with precision is not an easy task, but these are the details that justify the "Advanced" pattern rating. Since I believe this inset will benefit from some extra structure I decided to interface it twice with the weft insertion, but I made a separate pattern piece without seam allowances for the second layer:
---
EN: As previously mentioned, the fronts/facings, the back facing and the side panels were entirely fused with the weft insertion; for the back I traced separate pattern pieces, reinforcing the areas shown in the next photo; the back piece that doesn't fold back along the slit will have less interfacing width along the slit (there's a red line on the interfacing pattern if you look closely, which indicates a different cutting line):
---
EN: The sleeves are also reinforced with thin knit fusible as shown by the separate pattern pieces for the interfacing that I've traced:
---
EN: Lastly I want to show you a simple step that adds some extra structure to the front shoulder area: it's a hair canvas floating shield cut on the bias which is applied with a top layer of thin knit fusible interfacing.
---
EN: Besides all this I also reinforced the armholes with special purpose fusible stay tape, and I will  stitch a strip of selvage along with the shoulder seam as I always do. After cutting the lining I will have everything prepared to start sewing. I ordered some superior lining in classic black from Truro Fabrics (here) and I'm just waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

By the way, Ann from GorgeousFabrics.com has made this long jacket using the traditional tailoring methods suggested by Vogue and it turned out GORGEOUS to say the least. Ann found a few issues in the instructions that she thoroughly documented in her review so it's a must read if you're interested in this pattern (click here for Ann's review of V1527 view A).

Stay tuned for more updates soon!
---

This will be stunning on you. Is the floating shield then stitched in to the shoulder seam? Or is it fused to the base weft insertion that is on the jacket front? Thanks for any answer, Tany.

Bunny: Thank you! I began by fusing the weft insertion to the entire front; then cut the canvas shield without SAs along the inset/collar seam and with a reduced (less than 1/4") SA along the armhole and shoulder. I placed it on the jacket front and then placed the thin fusible on top, which includes all SAs but it's a little shorter than the shield. I fused the top layer in place, sandwishing the canvas underneath. When the shoulders and armholes are stitched the shield will be caught by the stitching so there's no risk of it getting out of place. I first read about this technique in the Burda Sewing book (my first sewing book) and I've applied it in several jackets tailored with fusible interfacings.
