Marfy3178 coat: the last finishing touches - Os retoques finais

EN Summary: The finishing touches are usually what set apart most of my garments and this simple Ponte knit "coatigan" is no exception for that matter; in this article you can find out about a few more construction details, leaving the final sewing review for the next article to be published soon. Keep reading for more!

Continuem a ler!

EN: I like using little reinforcement buttons for backing my buttons; I just hate seeing all that thread and thread knots inside the coat, and the little buttons also have a practical use: they keep the main buttons from pulling out and deforming the fabric when stressed. Bellow you can see the backing buttons and the inside finishing of the bound buttonholes. Some time ago I did publish a tutorial on how to sew bound buttonholes including the inside finishing (click here and scroll down for the English version, if you're interested).

EN: I tried hemming the coat by hand only to find out that with this Ponte knit, no matter how thin my needle was or how careful I had been, there would be a slight indentation on the right side, caused by the hand-stitches. It doesn't happen with all Ponte knits / double knits I've tried, but with this one in particular it did. So I decided to do top-stitched hems instead and it really worked fine with this spongy double knit fabric, also enhancing this simple coat design.

EN: Observing the coat on the dress-form I noticed that the front edges wouldn't hang perfectly straight, they had the tendency to shift towards the center so very slightly; to get a better hang of the front edges I used a little flat lead weight (the kind used on window draperies), covered with a silk organza improvised bag; I stitched the bag to the front edge seam allowances right above the top-stitched hem, inside the front facing.
---
EN: I did mention in a previous article that I liked the coat better with raglan shoulder-pads. I believe this pattern was specifically designed for shoulder-pads because without them, the shoulders of the coat seem hollow. Since this coat isn't lined, the "raw" shoulder-pads wouldn't look very nice, in my opinion, so I decide to partially line them. Why partially? because the surface of the tailored shoulder-pads that I'm using sort of grips into the fabric on top of them and I would like to keep that effect. I used self-fabric to line the inner part of the shoulder-pad, first pinning it in place as you see below; it's hardly perceptible but I clipped the fabric, just below the place of where the shoulder edge will be (the rounder surface of the concave), so I could overlap both edges of the fabric and accommodate the concave shape. Another option would be making my own shoulder pads (see this recent article by Ann, and this other article by Paco Peralta showing how he made raglan shoulder pads for a jacket - notice the pattern draft for the shoulderpads, sclolling down to the bottom of his blog post).

EN: I used running stitches to stitch the fabric to the inner shoulder-pads permanently, then zigzagged around it's edges and trimmed the excess fabric; the shoulder pads were then stitched along the upper sleeve seam with imperceptibly slightly loose prick-stitches.
---
EN: The coat is finished and I just need to take the final photos and write the final sewing review. See you all soon!

Raglan shoulder pads are my go to pad when I need them. They seem to fill in my narrow, sloping shoulders much better than a pad that ends at the seam allowance. Love your idea of lining them halfway. I will definitely use that and thanks, Tawny.

Estou tão curiosa! Os retoque valorizam muito o casaco.
