2014#11: The owl sheer top – Top de tecido leve estampado com corujas

This is the first of my short vacation at home sewing projects; I had this cute owl print sheer fabric in my stash and since baby blue is so trendy for this spring I decided to make a top out of it; this top has an accentuated V shaped neckline, wide sleeves and in spite of the recommended fabrics being fabrics with some body like linen or satin, I thought it would perfect for a sheer fabric like chiffon or gauze as well. The pattern used was BurdaStyle 2014/02 model 117:

Este é o primeiro dos projetos concluídos durante a minha semana de férias em casa; tinha este tecido estampado com corujas que acho bastante engraçado e como o azul-bebé está bastante na moda para esta primavera, decidi fazer um top com ele. O top tem um decote em V bastante acentuado e mangas abalonadas, e apesar dos tecidos recomendados serem tecidos com algum corpo (como o linho e o cetim), achei que também ficaria bem com um tecido mais leve e fino como este. O molde usado foi o modelo 117 da BurdaStyle 2014/02:

I’m not going to extend this review because I have a few more garments to be reviewed; I’ll just say that this type of fabric is not easy to cut (I layered it on top of newspaper papers and used a rotary cutter and mat), it’s also not heat resistant, so I had to use the pressing iron on the lower setting and always use a press cloth between the iron and the fabric,…) Applying fusible interfacing to the neckline facing was an adventure on its own and after a few tests I found a low temperature sheer fusible interfacing that worked . The seam treatment was the simplest possible, after stitching (used the thinnest needle available on the sewing machine, size 60) I zigzagged SAs together and trimmed away the excess.

Não me vou estender muito no processo de costura pois tenho mais algumas peças para mostrar; vou apenas mencionar que um tecido deste tipo não é fácil de cortar pois é muito escorregadio; estendê-lo sobre folhas de jornal ajuda a mantê-lo direito enquanto se corta e uma lâmina rotativa com tapete de corte próprio é sem dúvida o método de corte que resulta melhor. O tecido também não aguenta temperaturas altas, tive de o passar com o ferro no mínimo e mesmo assim usar sempre um pano fino entre o tecido e o ferro. Aplicar entretela termo-colante à vista do decote foi um filme: depois de várias tentativas lá consegui usar uma entretela muito fina que colava a baixas temperaturas. O acabamento das costuras também foi o mais simples possível: depois de cosidas (usei a agulha mais fina na máquina, tamanho 60), chuleei os valores de costura juntos com ponto ziguezague e aparei rente ao ziguezague.

Conclusion: A nice trendy top that I’ll layering over a strappy top! Loved the end result! Stay tuned for quite a few more garments to be reviewed next!

2014#9 – Navy&black set: the pants – Conjunto marinho&preto: as calças

Description: Low waist wide pants with side panels, front-fly zipper, shaped waistline and in-seam pockets. 

Pattern used: BurdaStyle 2013/12, model 103B with modifications (click here for more details)

Fabric used: thin stable knit in navy blue and black, with some Lycra in the composition.

2014#10 – Navy & Black set: The top – Conjunto Azul Marinho e Negro: o top

Description: Close fitting cropped knit top with raised neckline, shaped short raglan sleeves and french darts; the original model has two invisible zippers, one on the side and another on the left shoulder. I opted for inserting an invisible zipper on the center back seam instead.

Pattern: BurdaStyle 2012/01, model 113; this pattern is for petite sizes; I transformed it into regular size (click here for the article detailing the procedure).

Descrição: Top justo tem gola subida, mangas raglan curtas e pinças francesas na frente, pinças verticais atrás; o original tem dois fechos invisíveis, um de lado e outro na costura do ombro esquerdo; optei por aplicar apenas um fecho invisível na costura central das costas.

As mentioned above, I opted for an invisible zipper on the center back; I used this tutorial by sewing Diva Els for the zipper insertion and this other one also by Els to finish the zipper with the neck facing (I omitted the button and the lining loop, though).

Como já mencionei, optei por um fecho invisivel na costura central das costas; usei este passo-a-passo da Sewing Diva Els para aplicar o fecho e este outro da mesma autora para fazer o acabamento do fecho com a vista do decote (omiti o botão e a anilha de forro).

This pattern is for a crop top and since I plan on wearing it to the office, instead of having to layer it over another longer top I opted for adding a false layer in black, simply narrow zigzag stitching it to the previously folded hem:

Este molde é para um top curto (mesmo depois das alterações), mas como planeio usá-lo no escritório, em vez de depois ter de o usar sobre outro top mais comprido, optei por acrescentar uma camada falsa dando o efeito da sobreposição; basta coser com ponto ziguezague estreito à bainha previamente dobrada do top:

Conclusion: The top turned out great and pairs wonderfully with the pants (see me wearing the pants here); the pictures were taken in a hurry during the weekend, they don’t do justice to the top that looks much better on me than on the dressform. Now all I can do is hoping for warmer weather days to be able to wear it! Thank you so much for reading!

Navy Blue & Black set (Part 2) – Conjunto Marinho e Preto (Parte 2)

Today I’m sharing a few pictures that illustrate the thread tracing and the interfacing on the pants front panels, and also show how I transformed the petite size top pattern into a regular size pattern.

Besides interfacing the shaped waistband pieces (both outer and inner pieces), I interfaced the pocket entries SAs and the front-fly facings; I don’t thread trace the pattern’s outline if I trust the pattern measurements (btw, I add the SAs to the paper pattern after tracing it using a parallel double tracing wheel that creases the cutting outline on the paper), but I still thread mark the important front-fly lines. For this, I first use special purpose yellow waxed paper and a tracing wheel to transfer the markings to the wrong side of the fabric, and then I thread trace with basting thread.

Hoje queria partilhar algumas fotos que mostram as marcações com alinhavos e as entretelas nos painéis da frente das calças e também mostrar como modifiquei os moldes do top, originalmente para senhoras pequenas, para o tamanho normal.

Além de entretelar tanto a parte de fora como a parte de dentro do cós das calças, também apliquei entretela as margens das entradas dos bolsos e as vistas da carcela. Se confio no molde, não me dou a o trabalho de marcar as margens; quando desenho o molde no papel acrescento estas margens (normalmente 1,5cm, exceto bainhas que normalmente serão de 3 a 4 cm), usando a régua ou uma recortilha dupla com distância entre rodas de 1,5cm; esta recortilha deixa um vinco no papel que indica a linha de corte, por onde recorto depois o molde. O que é necessário marcar (linhas de aposição, etc.) pode ser marcado com alinhavos. No caso das linhas da carcela, usei papel químico amarelo e uma recortilha para passar as marcações para o avesso do tecido, e depois passo os alinhavos.

 The following photos show the top’s pattern after being altered to fit a normal size with 1cm increments along the traced horizontal lines; the sleeves will be a little wider than the original, but I’m making it a design feature (to avoid this the breaking line should be placed higher near the shoulder line, instead of aligned with the upper front breaking line).

As fotos seguintes mostram as alterações no molde do top para o tamanho normal, com linhas de incremento de 1cm ao longo da horizontal; quanto às mangas, ficarão um pouco mais largas, mas vejo o facto como um elemento de design; se não quisesse esse efeito, teria de colocar as linhas de incremento mais acima, perto do ombro, em vez de alinhadas com a posição das linhas de incremento da frente e das costas do top.

You can also observe on the back of the top that I thread marked the zipper end (indicated by the red arrow); the SAs should be interfaced from the top down to below this mark and the invisible zipper should be nearly one inch longer (for invisible zipper tutorials refer to the tutorial index tab bellow right bellow the blog banner). The idea for this project came from this pants that I spotted in a well known RTW online shop:

A ideia base para este projeto nasceu de umas calças que vi no website de uma conhecida marca de pronto-a-vestir:

I liked the concept of navy blue wide pants with a wide black side panel so I went to the physical store hoping to see the pants in real life. I confess I felt a little disappointed because the pants resembled some of my gym pants,… Don’t get me wrong, they are nice in their own style, but too “casual” IMO. I aimed for a dressier version so I decided to make my own pair and perhaps adding a matching top. I found this pattern (BurdaStyle 2013/12 mod 103), which has a shaped waistband, in-seam front pockets and a fly-front zipper; there is no side panel though, the back simply extends to the front, kind of shifting the side seam to the front:

Gostei do conceito de calças azul-marinho com um painel lateral largo em preto, por isso fui à loja física na esperança de poder ver as calças ao vivo. Confesso que fiquei um pouco desiludida, uma vez que as calças me faziam lembrar algumas das que uso no ginásio,… Demasiado casuais para o que pretendo. Não que não sejam bonitas, dentro do seu estilo, mas pretendo um modelo mais “aprumado”. Decidi então fazer as calças à minha maneira, e talvez também um top a condizer. Encontrei este molde (BurdaStyle 2013/12, modelo 103B), o qual tem um cós enformado, bolsos metidos na costura e uma carcela clássica; não tem painel lateral, a parte de trás estende-se um pouco para a frente, deslocando assim a costura lateral para a frente:

With a slight modification, this pattern can be used to make my vision come true; just need to add a vertical seam from the back dart point to the hem (thus eliminating the dart and creating a shaped side panel):

Com apenas uma pequena modificação no molde, este pode ser usado para tornar realidade as calças que imaginei; basta adicionar uma costura na linha da pinça de trás (eliminando assim a pinça e criando um painel lateral que estreita para a cintura):

For the top I elected BurdaStyle 2012/01 model 113; I plan on making it in navy blue with black sleeves, adding a 8 inch invisible zipper on the back instead of the shoulder and side seam zippers featured in the original model (I avoid applying zippers on curved seams if I can). This pattern is for petite women, but I modified it to suit a regular size.

Para o top escolhi o modelo 113 da BurdaStyle 2012/01; vou fazer o top em azul-marinho com mangas pretas, com um fecho invisível de 20cm nas costas (o modelo original tem um fecho no ombro e outro na costura lateral, mas eu prefiro evitar fechos em costuras arredondadas). O modelo é para senhoras pequenas, mas modifiquei-o para tamanho normal.

As for the fabrics, I’m using thin navy blue stable knit with a matte crepe look right side finishing and black Lycra knit for the side panels, waistband and the top sleeves. I finished the pants yesterday and I’m wearing them today, but since it is raining I wasn't able to take outfit pictures; if I manage to take a few shots, they will be published on my wardrobe blog Tany et La Mode later today. Pictures of me wearing the pants were published here. The top is still in progress; hopefully I’ll be able to finish it during the week. Quanto a tecidos estou a usar uma malha estável fina em azul-marinho com um acabamento tipo crepe no direito e malha de lycra fina preta para os painéis laterais, cós e mangas do conjunto. Terminei as calças ontem e estou a usá-las hoje, mas infelizmente, como estava a chover bastante, não consegui tirar fotos. Se conseguir tirar algumas durante o dia, serão publicadas no meu blogue de estilo pessoal Tany et La Mode. As fotos de mim a usar as calças já foram publicadas aqui! 2014#8 – Chartreuse skinny pants – Calças de malha justas verde-maçã

DESCRIPTION: Close-fitting pants with high waist, narrow waistband, side slant pockets, front fly zipper and back mock-up single welt pockets. 

PATTERN USED: BurdaStyle 2014/02, model 129B; I shortened the hem by approximately 3 inches.

DESCRIÇÃO: Calças justas de cintura alta, cós estreito, bolsos metidos na diagonal, carcela na frente e bolsos de uma pestana falsos atrás. 

MOLDE: BurdaStyle 2014/02, modelo 129B; encurtei as calças uns 7cm.

FABRIC USED: Stable knit with some Lycra in the composition. This type of knit fairly holds its form and doesn't need any seam treatment. You cannot press it directly though; I used my silk organza pressing cloth and the medium temperature setting on the iron. I forgot to mention this detail on my previous projects using this same knit… Also note that on the T-shirts I've just made I stabilized the raglan armholes using pre-chainstitched fusible tape (Vilene bias tape). 

INTERFACING: Used Vilene bias tape for the slant pockets opening, and some kind of thermo-weft (see picture below) for the front-fly facings, back pocket placement and waistband. I also reinforced the crotch seam using lining selvage.

TECIDO: Malha estável com um pouco de lycra na composição. Este material consegue manter-se razoavelmente bem sem deformar e não precisa de qualquer acabamento nas costuras. No entanto não se pode usar o ferro de passar diretamente no tecido: usei sempre um pano de organza de seda entre o ferro e o tecido, tanto no assentar das costuras como no aplicar da entretela. No post anterior, onde mostrei as T-shirts feitas com esta malha, também me esqueci de referir que estabilizei as cavas raglan com fita de entretela pespontada Vilene bias tape.

ENTRETELAS: Usei fita Vilene nas entradas dos bolsos da frente, e a entretela da figura abaixo comprada na Feira dos Tecidos para as vistas da carcela, área de aplicação dos bolsos de uma pestana falsos e cós. Também usei aurela de forro (recorta-se uma tira fininha ao longo da lateral de uma peça de forro) para reforçar a costura do gancho das calças.

DETAILS: The following pictures will give you an idea of the finishing details on these pants; as I mentioned before, there was no need of any seam treatment. I also didn't match the zipper color; I figured I could use this beige zipper from my stash instead of buying a green chartreuse zipper especially for these pants. I have a huge notions stash that I need to use and will only buy notions if absolutely necessary.

DETALHES: As fotos seguintes darão uma ideia dos acabamentos nas calças; como já tinha mencionado, com este tecido não há necessidade de rematar as orlas; reparem também que não me dei ao trabalho de comprar um fecho verde-maçã, achei que o bege serviria perfeitamente; tenho uma grande quantidade de materiais acumulados em casa e prefiro usá-los, só comprando materiais que sejam absolutamente necessários.

CONCLUSION: I was satisfied with how the pants turned out; since they are made of a knit, I wouldn't wear them with short/cropped toppers because they tend to be too revealing IMO, but with a longer top or shirt they will work out fine. The mock-up single-welt pockets were a first to me, but I think if the pockets were real, they would show the outline on the right side (this happens slightly with the front slant pockets too, but I can live with those!). I also want to reinforce the need of using interfacing for stabilizing facings, pocket placement area, etc. BurdaStyle instructions don’t go into much detail and sometimes they miss directions, so apply your best judgment and in doubt, interface it! CONCLUSÃO: Fiquei satisfeita com o resultado final; uma vez que são feitas de malha, não as usaria com tops curtos, pois acho que se tornam demasiado reveladoras por serem muito justas e terem cor clara, mas funcionam muito bem com tops e camisas mais compridos. Os bolsos fingidos atrás foram uma estreia para mim, e ainda considerei fazer bolsos ”reais”, mas depois pensei que o volume iria ser demasiado. Mesmo os bolsos da frente notam-se um bocado, mas com esses posso eu viver! Também quero reforçar a necessidade de usar entretelas nas vistas, no sítio de colocação de bolsos, aberturas de bolsos, etc. As instruções da Burda nem sempre são completas, por isso apliquem o vosso julgamento e na dúvida, entretelem! 2014#6 & 2014#7: Two raglan tops – Dois tops com mangas raglan

DESCRIPTION: raglan top with shirred sleeve on the shoulders; there’s a long sleeve version and a short sleeve version for this pattern, I’ve made both.

DESCRIÇÃO: Top raglan com mangas franzidas nos ombros; o molde tem versão manga comprida e versão manga curta, fiz as duas.

  

PATTERN: BurdaStyle 02/20142013 model 127 (thanks for the remark, Jenny)(long sleeve) and 126 (short sleeve). There’s also a dress version of the pattern, which I intend to make in the future with some modifications.

DETAILS & ALTERATIONS: For the long sleeve version I used the remnant knit fabric from the Patrones skirt (click here for the review), which wasn't enough; I had to add a seam along the back and skip the hem allowances on the sleeves:

DETALHES E ALTERAÇÕES: Na versão de manga comprida usei o tecido de malha que sobrou da saia Patrones (clicar aqui), que não era suficiente; então tive de cortar as costas com uma costura central e cortar as mangas sem bainhas:

I did the neckline finishing a little different from the Burda’s instructions; I didn't fold the band in half lengthwise, etc. I placed it unfolded around the neckline (both ends stitched together to match the neckline circumference), then pinned right sides together along the neckline, stitched 2/8 inch from the edge, pressed the band to the neckline side, then fold it around the 2/8 inch SA and stitched in the ditch on the right side; then I just trimmed away the remaining band fabric on the wrong side. I could do this because the stable knit doesn't ravel or run, it needs no seam treatment at all (isn't it wonderful?).

Fiz o acabamento do decote de forma diferente da especificada nas instruções: não dobrei a banda ao meio ao longo do comprimento, etc. Em vez disso coloquei-a sem dobrar, direito contra direito sobre a margem do decote, cosendo antes as extremidades da banda juntas de forma a obter a circunferência do decote; cosi a pouco menos de 1cm da orla, assentei a banda a ferro para cima e depois para o avesso, em torno dos valores de costura; depois foi só pespontar em cima da costura da banda pelo direito e aparar o excedente de tecido no avesso. Isto só é possível fazer com tecidos que não desfiem ou malhas que não corram, como é o caso desta.

CONCLUSION: Quick and easy project, and a great raglan top pattern with a twist. Highly recommend it! I’m currently in the process of using the remaining chartreuse knit to make a pair of matching pants, hoping to have them finished by tomorrow.
